Interesting mixes. Very much a collection of old and new, there.

How'd they do in matchups?

For the most part I was walking around the hall for the day. I only stayed near the top table on the last round in case they needed me.

It was 186 Teal v Papa
Dash + 2 Tlt Y-wings versus Dash and Chewy
Soontir, Vader, Pope versus Soontir and Chirpy
5 Kihraxz versus the Brobots

Teal Dash got battered early and the Y-wings seemed to find themselves frequently just inside Range 1

Soontir and Chirpy seemed to have the upper hand most of the game but Teal almost pulled it back with the game ending with Soontir on 1 hull and the OGP also on 1 hull due to Hull Upgrade

The third game I didn't see much, I just know that 25-30 minutes in the bots still had shields and 2 (of 5) K-Fighters were dead.

Who was the Cool Club's UK champion? We played them in the last round and they utterly murdered our Brobots/TLT Spam/Soonts-Vader-Palpabus lists.

It was a long day, but a really great event.

Oliver Pocknell won the Nordic Nationals earlier this year.

I played Oliver in rd3 - got thrown under the bus with my brobots to leave another better imperial scum match up for us. His list is very much designed to kill brobots so no surprises at that result and he plays his list very well.

I didn't lose a ship in our game but lost overall as one of my brobots was on one health when time was called (as was his Jake) but a really enjoyable against a really nice guy to play against.

Great format, well run and a big thank you to Ian from Guardians of Tyr and his team for a great day of x wing.

What was the format?

32 3-player teams, with each player in the team running a different faction. Whichever team with the lower total squad points cost across their three lists got to pick the first matchup, the other team got to decide the remaining two. Whichever team won at least 2 of the three games won that round, with MOV as the first tie-breaker.

Full rules are here, if you're really interested:

Each team of 3 had to have an imperial, rebel and scum player. Once team match ups known (random for rd1) the team with initiative overall (out of the 300) could either chose the first match up or pass it to the opposition to do so. In effect the other team then chose match ups 2 and 3 by picking the next pairing. Each player then played 1on 1 with the usual rules for deciding the winner. Results fed into an overall team result.

32 teams playing 5 rds so effectively knock out as produced 1 undefeated team.

2nd Place - Cool Club (295)

Captain Rebel

Jake Farrell - VI, PRockets, PtL, Autothrusters, A-Wing Test Pilot

Han Solo - Predator, Luke, C-3PO, Engine Upgrade, Title

Imperial

Whisper - VI, ACD, Sensor Jammer, Recon Spec

Echo - VI ACD, Fire Control System, Gunner

Academy Tie

Scum

2x Kihraxz Black Sun Ace - Crack Shot

2x Kihraxz Black Sun Ace - Crack Shot, Glitterstim

The upgrades on Echo and Whisper look backwards there. They could be right - just opposite of what you would expect and what should be optimal. If they are indeed as shown, then that is very interesting.

I believe that they were backward but entered this was on the pre tourney registration form and not spotted until the event itself and therefore too late to be changed.

I have to say I really enjoyed the format. We knew we weren't going to be that strong as a group (we ended up 25th out of 32... I think), so we made sure to make a strong initiative bid and our two team wins came from being able to throw one of us under the bus of the nastiest opposing squad.

Obviously against the top of the pack there's no such thing as a non-nasty list, but down in the mid-card it worked alright! Unfortunately I think our team wasn't quite set up right - two of us had squads with a very similar style (chipping away consistently with either TLTs or Correctors). Just from observation the teams with 3 different styles were able to play to the strength of the tournament better.

So yeah, good event, good structure. Will certainly try to go again next time.

So, did he actually fly it with the upgrades as shown? And still get 2nd for their team? That's impressive.

He certainly did, he's a good player.

Other replies have already answered this, but I'll add a bit as well

This wasn't the only team/ list to suffer from this error, after a discussion the judges (5 of us) unanimously agreed that the list(s) had to be played as submitted.

Due to his error Oliver, Captain of the Cool club, I believe was crowned "worst captain eva!" (In jest of cause)

For the record, the other list was a Boba/ Iggy (Iggy D submitted, was meant to be Iggy B)
