making epic format ships available as model kits

By TylerTT, in X-Wing

I don't know if anyone else wants this but it's something I would really like to have. The epic paintjobs are not quite what I want and I like building models. maybe something FFG could sell direct? or would the licensing be too weird.

Probably a licensing issue more than anything else.

I think too, as you don't need the same amount of detail, the ships from FFG use quite a few parts whereas a model kit would have far more. Another issue would be number of sales, while I wouldn't think you are unique you may be in a very small group of people that would make the supply and demand side of things make for a very expensive kit.

Epic is more of a side game instead of the core game. Sine the entire business model is based around pre-assembled pre-painted miniatures it doesn't make that much sense to have the side products that much removed from the main product line. FFG has focused on the RPG and game side of miniatures and not much on the painting and creative type of the miniature hobby. So having FFG make products that GW has made their business around will not work for FFG's business models.

Why don't you just repaint the existing models?

This. They repaint really nicely. :)

I don't know if FFG would ever put out model kits but I for one would like more spaceship kits.

i am guessing what the OP really wants is a cheaper way to get an epic ship... I think the paint jobs on FFG's ships are pretty good. certainly better than what the average home painter can do.. yes there are some great painters out there and those are usually the ones you see posting. You don't see people posting their crappy repaints..lol I just remember the days from other miniature games where they came unpainted and not very detailed. when you played with others the paint jobs ran the gamut from stellar to something that looked like it was painted with latex house paint!! At least now we have a minimum default value in the "looks" area of X-wing.. and that default value is pretty darn good... just saying!!! And adding the skills modifier to a kit widens the potential disparity even more so!!

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that they don't have the license for kits.

Nope! I've bought every huge/Epic so far with plans to continue. But if they come in kit form and unpainted then I'd pass.

The first reason I got into this game is the prepainted models. Take that away that you've taken one of the main reasons for me to purchase the ships in the first place.

I believe his suggestion was to also sell kits.

Plenty of people make their own kits from scratch with some painted up evergreen with a splash of paint can do the job just takes a little more skill and time. If that's still too expensive/time consuming you can try cardboard, scraps of household junk and a hot glue gun to make larger models.

For example: Boomer_J's Neb B

When building a kit it can be really nice to not have to fix someone else's assembly job. but yeah i should go the route of re-painting. I just hate to do it because I know there is value in that paint job I'm wasting by repainting it.

Both the transport and the raider look to have great paint jobs. it's just that corvette that looks like it's got leprosy.

Alms for an ex-leper?

It would be awesome if Fantasy flight released standard scale CR-90, Neb-B, GR-75 and Raider. But... I don't see that coming :(

Well if you look at Armada the ships there have also have adjusting scales. So yeah, if they couldn't keep everything to the same scale in Armada then you definitely won't see it in X-wing.

When I repaint a model I see that as added value because I have fun painting. M3As are really cool to paint, as are HWKs (bought 3 because the first one looked great after painting). Both of these models can benefit greatly. Repainting imperials is a bit tricky and I haven't touched any of mine, yet, although I consider painting my TIE-Fighters in the grayish blue that all other (that I care about) TIEs come in. Inquisitors TIE will get the same treatment. All large based ships and some small ones get engine glow.

View the factory paintjob as a service so you never have to play with unpainted minis and won't have to bother with those that you are already statisfied with, but don't let it keep you from customizing your stuff to your liking!

As much as I still enjoy models, since picking up X-Wing this year, I've come to realize I enjoy the painting and making minor changes (e.g. moving the K-Wing's ball turret to the rear or removing the E-Wing's top gun) more than the assembling process. Not having to paint or assemble if I don't feel like it is nice though, and I know a lot of people I play with who probably wouldn't have gotten into X-Wing if the pre-assembled/pre-painted aspect wasn't present.

FFG Costumer service is usually pretty cool, you MIGHT be able to prepay one and request it unpainted. It'd be pretty doubtful but the worst thing they can do is say no. Also you could always simple green one out of a box.
