First attempt at a table topper
Mostly, that you need to stop using Photobucket.
But it's good.

I would use polyacrylic and not polyurethane, but sure, it couldn't hurt. (Polycrylic works better over paint and has the side benefit of not yellowing with time). The minwax stuff in a blue can is great, though by the time you've bought it and everything else, you could have bought a playmat.

On the other hand, if you plan on making more than one... Besides, a bought mat is just not the same as your own mat.
I used a 4'x4' sheet of 12mm MDF board and glued a length of black upholstery vinyl to it. Marked out the 3x3 play area with red PVC tape and edged the vinyl with black cloth tape. The board stores away easily and the vinyl is a good rough surface that the models don't slide on easily. I'll get a photo up later today.
Edited by UumbukuI do have a playmat already. The issue i had was my table is only 34 wide. The surfus is rough sanded so there is some texture on the board. Would the polycrilic make the ships slide too much. And yes i plan on making more

That depends on a lot of things. If the surface underneath is rough, a couple of layers of polycryclic aren't likely to create a "glassy" surface. But that depends on how rough it is and how much you sand between coats (if at all).
In other thoughts, I've had a friend apply polyacrylic to a black painted surface before and get some weird results (you could see blemishes in the poly). I'll have to ask him what he did wrong, as that isn't the norm. Not is it a problem if you only do a single layer. But I figured I'd better throw that warning out since you've put a lot of work into this - always test on scrap with the same paint!
In other other thoughts - if your surface is rough, wear and tear without some sort of protection will be quite rapid and noticeable. As things rub and touch the rough surface, the high points are going to come off, and the paint with it.

The battle mat.
Not very colourful but it works well.
Dammit man! Close that curtain!
That's the sunbeam obstacle of narcolepsy.
Land on it and you lose actions and cannot shoot...
