Is it possible to play Scum without having to buy a starter set?

By felforlife, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Pretty much the title. No interest in campaign play. Can scum be played as a complete faction and if so, do you actually have to buy the starter set for any vital components?

Each person should have the map tiles at a minimum (for tournament play), which is the only thing REQUIRED for you to play skirmish IN the starter. You can get these things outside the starter:

Figures, deployment cards, skirmish cards (in the figure packs, or on eBay)

Dice (available as separate pack)

Damage tokens (3rd party acrylics available on the web, or maybe on eBay)

All other tokens - focus, stun, initiative, weaken, etc (3rd party acrylics on the web, or maybe on eBay)

The hard part about all of this is: The starter (and twin shadows) includes some characters you will probably want (Nexu, Trandoshans, etc) as well as a LOT of skirmish cards that you'll want (Take initiative, etc). Even if you think there's a load of crap that's in there just for campaign users, in actuality its only some mission cards, hero and hero upgrade cards, among another couple handfuls of cards that you'll never use. Its worth it! You get dice, map tiles, deployment cards, and can build some really good lists right out of the box. Or you could hock the imperial guards and make a lot of your money back on your purchase of the starter.

Or, just go with the initial plan and buy scum outside the starter, then piece everything together. You may be out more money unless you build a very specific list and find exactly what you want either online or in stores. I believe this site will show you in a backwards way whats in each set:

Ahh thank you, didn't know that there was scum in the starter box. Thought it was just rebels and empire.

In fact, it holds one of the better units for Scum, the Trandoshan Hunters. It definitely has a limited selection, but definitely has things you want. In fact, you might want multiple copies of those Trandos, but the core set only contains two pairs, with one card for elites and one for the regular ones.

I don't know how you could run scum effectively without Trandoshan Hunters.

Hired Guns aren't robust enough on their own. Sand People... Well, I'll have to play with them some. You can't get numbers on the table with both IG-88 and Fett on the squad.

Also, there is a way to add Imperials or Rebels to your scum squad, and that card is in the starter set, as are the Nexu.

Do you use Nexu? I haven't had any luck at all with them.

It is annoying that they don't give you enough cards with each mini to use it in either variant.

I agree, its a dilemma

Yeah... one elite trando card, one regular trando card, and two sets of figures. At least you can get another elite trando card from a store prize kit (its a participation prize)

Ooh, which one?
