Treating another ship's Focus As Your Own

By heliodorus04, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Esege Tuketu's ability is

when another friendly ship at Range 1-2 is attacking, it may treat your focus tokens as its own.

I don't know that I've encountered this kind of ability before and it confuses me.

If a friendly ship is treating Tuketu's token as 'his own' does that mean the other friendly ship consumes Tuketu's token if it wants to modify an evade or attack die Focus result?

Because if a friendly ship can spend your own tokens, that doesn't seem all that useful. Sure, you can put a Recon Specialist in there, and that's neat.

On the other hand, if the friendly ship gets all the benefit without having to consume Tuketu's ability, that's pretty awesome.

And I have no idea which is a correct rule interpretation.

The friendly ship consumes Tuketu's token.

If the friendly ship is Garven Dreis, the consumed token can then be passed back to Tuketu, where it can be used again by Garven Dreis, who passes it back, et c. et c.

Otherwise, it's action economy neutral, but if Tuketu has a Twin Laser Turret, he doesn't really need actions at all, and passing the token to an ally is more beneficial than keeping it for himself.

Because if a friendly ship can spend your own tokens, that doesn't seem all that useful.

Nera Dantels and the Advanced Protons I've had her firing off with Esege's ability would like to disagree.

Friendly ships can take Target Locks, and use Esege to essentially have both actions in one turn. Just gotta think on it a little and I'm sure you can come up with more! :)

For that matter, any ordnance that require that you possess a Focus Token without necessarily SPENDING that token, loves you.

That's Proton Rockets first, and if you give the Ship in question Deadeye, then Ion Pulse Missiles and Homing Missiles as well.

If you play Epic note that a Tantive IV can use that focus.

Being the only way a Tantive could use a focus at all, that's dang spiffy.

Except focus tokens can't affect huge ships.

Focus, Evade, and Stress Tokens

Focus, evade, and stress tokens do not affect huge ships. When a huge ship receives any of these tokens, immediately remove them and return them to the token supply

I thought the same and then I asked and it turns out you can....

"Hello William,

In response to your rules question:

Rules Question:

Does Esege Tuketu's ability work with the Tantive IV? Esege Tuketu: "when another friendly ship at range 1-2 is attacking, it may treat your

focus
? Thanks!

Yes, the CR90 is able to spend Esege’s focus tokens.

Because the Tantive isn't receiving the focus token, it's just spending it.

Well, then the question is does it produce any effect when the CR90 "spends" it? The rules clearly says focus tokens "do not affect huge ships". So beeing able to spend it doesn't neccessarily mean you get any kind of effect from doing so.

Granted, if the intent was that the spending would have no effect, Franks answer proboly would have spelled it out a bit more direclty.

Because the Tantive isn't receiving the focus token, it's just spending it.

The rules clearly state two things in regards to focus tokens and huge ships:
1. Focus tokens don't affect huge ships.
2. If a huge ship gets a token it is immediately discarded.

Yes, it's clear that the huge ship cannot be affected by or have a focus token, but I feel like everybody is missing one key word in Esege's ability:

"When another friendly ship at Range 1-2 is attacking, it may treat your focus tokens as its own."

The rules rather specifically do not say whether a huge ship can spend one of these tokens, only that they cannot be affected by or assigned these tokens.

Does a ship's attack affect itself? I do not think so.

Imagine that

you CAN take 3 point Recon.

And SUDDENLY your missiles and torpedoes have focus on nearby ships

more than that, it's one of the 2 methods of breaking the "no focus for Huge ships" rule (the other being Han-crew)

Would Poe also get to convert a focus to a hit when attacking if he's within range 1-2 of Tuketu?

Would Poe also get to convert a focus to a hit when attacking if he's within range 1-2 of Tuketu?

Yes. Tuketu's ability doesn't just say that friendly ships can spend his focus tokens, it says a friendly ship "...may treat your focus tokens as its own." While Poe is attacking, Esege's focus tokens are treated as if they are assigned to both Esege and Poe at the same time.
