A new Range Finder

By SanguineAngel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello guys and gals

I've been lurking here for a while as I learned the ropes with EotE. Decided it was time to sign up and get involved. So Hi!

One thing that I have had difficulty with in some instances is being able to keep track of ranges in combat when players are off doing their own thing. Although combat is abstract and narrative, I find my players a little at sea without some bearings to take occasionally.

There have been a couple of range trackers around but none of them have quite matched my own requirements.

I've put together a little something for my own use that I thought some of you might also find useful. My idea was really an attempt to keep track of multiple relative ranges in an easy visual manner:

It's a png, so can be superimposed over maps etc.

How it works: The central red area is where your player party is going to be hanging out. on either side, you've got space for NPCs to move in and out of ranges. The solid areas represent range from the centre:

Red: Close/Engaged

Orange: Short

Yellow:Medium

Green: Long

Blue: Extreme

I really wanted something that would help me keep track of things if and when players start moving around independently.

The Hashed areas represent relative ranges. You can move a player and npc to the red hashed area of the yellow band to show that they are engaged with each other, for example, whilst remaining at medium range from the rest of the party.

It's still quite basic and won't cover every eventuality but should enable you to track relative positioning in a fairy quick fashion.

Care to drop a little bit of exposition so we can tell what we're looking at?

The basic range bands I get. Red=engaged, Orange=Short/Close, Yellow=Medium, Green=Long, Blue=Extreme.

What are the hashed parts?

My guess is the hashed areas are to have dynamic set ups.

PC1 is at long range of NPC 1, so he is on the green band, however he is at medium range of NPC 2, so he is on the yellow hashed part of the green band while NPC 2 is on the red hashed part. NPC 2 will be moved to the appropriate band to indicate his range from NPC 1.

I usually just use maps...mostly because set ups like this get really complicated fast. :)

Hi all,

You're right, Voice; some explanation may be necessary. I'll update the OP but rowdyoctopus has it right really. However, to be honest, I'm already moving away from needing this sort of aid. I've not got any experience with vehicle combat yet and with the relative speeds, that might still be handy, we'll see.
