Palob needs some friends...

By lurq, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi everyone,

Wanted to see if anyone had any ideas on how to fill out a scum squad. I've had some success with this HWK-290 build, but I haven't been able to find a good group to fly with him.

Palob Godalhi (20)

-Lightning Reflexes (1)

-Twin Laser Turret (6)

-Recon Specialist (3)

-Moldy Crow (3)

33 total.

I'd love to build a durable supporting cast. Any ideas to fill the remaining 67 points? I have every scum ship, so there are plenty of options.

You could probably get away with blaster turret if you're rec spec and moldy crow. I've been running a xizor/Hounds tooth list that has 34 points left, that palob build would be a good add.

Catachanninja - I like the idea of Xizor + Hound's Tooth + the HWK build. IMO, the TLT is worth it, just to have the chance at range 3 shots. Plus, you can spend focus tokens like crazy on the TLT. Thanks for the idea!

To be honest I would rather use Guri than Xizor here. 2-3 ships that are reasonably valuable themselves aren't good meatshields.

I like this combination: https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Scum%20and%20Villainy&d=v3!s!125:134,135,38,-1:3:-1:;101:57,-1:16:15:U.44,U.-1;126:135,123,-1:-1:-1:

Highly synergistic, but not so much that it falls apart once one piece is gone. Pick your favourite one or two point crew for Torkil. Maybe consider switching Palobs Rec Spec and Torkils crew, since Palob generates enough focus more often than not.

Well, with that guy on the field, you're picking off tokens at range 1-2, and firing your twin turret at range 2-3, so you want to be at range 2 (that's the argument in favour of a blaster turret, I guess).

regardless, you probably want someone to....engage the enemy more closely. If you can fit in Opportunist, you can be fairly confident of getting to use it; so I'd consider that. A Black Sun Ace with Opportunist or two can make a nice mess of the opposition.

I've only ever played with Palob right after wave 6 was released but I think in 6 games he stole like one token. I'm not saying his ability wasn't useful, it just wan't a source of tokens. If Palob was coming under fire I could burn through focus tokens before PS 6 rolled around and he had a shot to fire. If there was an enemy that ended up in range 2 of him they didn't want to give me tokens enough to fuel my attack.

It's a little counter intuitive but I think that TLT is a better choice for Mux and Palob than any of the other turrets. It forces opponents to choose between trying to stay at range three and getting attacked or getting into range one but being affected by the HWK's ability.

I haven't tried it, yet, but TLT looks good in my eyes for the Scum HWKs, since they aren't entirely useless at range 3, even quite competent, while their abilities discourage avoiding the TLT at range one. You are less usefull at range 1, but more usefull overall.

What about this:

Palob Godalhi (20)
Lightning Reflexes (1)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Recon Specialist (3)
Moldy Crow (3)
Mandalorian Mercenary (35)
Push the Limit (3)
K4 Security Droid (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
N'Dru Suhlak (17)
Lone Wolf (2)
Total: 97
With 3 points to spend on your illicit upgrade of choice.

Kath. I choose Kath.

That squad leans away from synergy towards individual strength, which is a good way to play Scum, too.

I would actually drop LR and put predator on Palob, leaving 1 point for an upgrade or initiative bid. No need for LR with a turret, but I was being true to the OP.

LR can actually be really clutch on a HWK with a turret. You don't need to reverse direction often but being able to do what amounts to a 1 S-loop or a 1 K-Turn could be huge. Especially since you can do it even while stressed. LR also helps to get something with Autothrusters in arc.

Crackshot might be a decent one point EPT on Palob. Someone like Fel with Stealth Device is going to need to make sure that they beat all of your TLT attack rolls by at least 1. The first time that the just tie your attack roll you can pop Crackshot to push a hit through and strip the Stealth Device.

Not a bad idea, but you do need to keep the enemy in arc to use Crack Shot.

I hadn't thought about the AT but I think predator will get more use with the TLT but Palob shouldn't be short of focus tokens with that build so predator might not be that valuable. I have thought about opportunist with Palob's team mates, but never played it.

Good catch. I totally forgot about the arc requirement.
