so I had an idea.

By rubberduck, in X-Wing

So this is the first time I have ever tried posting a topic here but here it goes.

I had an idea kind of mechanic: Ion storm.

It goes like this. Instead of asteroids you place ion bomb tokens and at the end of the end phase you roll one attack die for each token, each location that gets a hit result suffers an ion strike and all ships at range one of the affected token gets ionized. The bomb tokens are not removed.

So is this really a new idea?

Can you think of any way to improve on it?

Do you think it might be fun?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I generelly like the idea, but I think after a short time you will get annoyed by the ion storms and ionized ships. Furthermore the game goes more into the direction where luck weights more.

At least to mention that turret ships would have a big advantage because they can still attack in every direction when ionized.

yup. Turret power creep.

I would love those turns where you get ionized and move into range 1 of another ion bomb and get ionized again, and then maybe even run into range 1 of another. Granted, the asteroids would need to be in just the right positions and you'd have to have just the right rolls, but it sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind maybe having 1 ion storm thingy on the board.

So maybe a lightning can't strike twice 1 turn immunity to the ion storm effect?

Could try ion Debris Clouds that eat your action too.

It would be nice if the thread subject gave a summary of the idea. "So, I had an idea: ion-bomb-obstacles!" etc.

I agree that the randomness would be more swingy than I'd like. What if you just had debris that gave two ion tokens instead of a stress token?

Thanks! I'll try to be more specific in the future.

I think if you are using any type of obstacle you need an irregular shape obstacle and not just a bomb token. The obstacles in the co-op campaign come to mind what was it called "Green Squadron" I think.

As for ion tokens I remember the first game I played with epic and we decided to use the old satellite tokens (wave 5 was not announced yet) and the rule with those is that they give 1 ion token and were removed when ever a ship overlaps them or their maneuver template. It worked well because it gave the capital ship less imperials the ability to remove obstacles as well. That rule has been dropped.

I like the idea but in the opinion of this Admiral you'd want it to be more timed and less every turn. For example: "Every turn after the first (because everyone is mostly just moving turn 1 anyway) roll an attack die. On a Critical Hit the Ion Storm has struck. Roll an attack die for any ships in range one of an obstacle. On a hit they receive an Ion token. A Storm cannot strike on 2 consecutive turns."

I like the idea. With some tinkering I see it working. But the space cow is gonna have a bad time if theres an Ion Turret in the opposing list too.
