Star destroyers... now more gray-triangular than ever!

By DUR, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm eagerly waiting the ISD, but something that's been bothering me about the FFG Imp paint scheme is that it just doesn't look anywhere close to what we see in the movies. The panel line contrast is too high and the ink wash is messy. Plus the panzer colored accents made the things look like a honda civic with stickers cruising down the street.

So after a can of testor's camouflage gray at mist distance, a paint brush with acrylic version of the same paint, a Copic cool gray liner in .03 mm, and a rubber eraser, this is the result:

I flattened the victory's bridge nose (It's a late-war variant!) and drilled out the gun barrels on the glad... because, you know, that totally makes the blacks go crit more.

Thank you Vykes for the inspiration to repaint my prepaints! Now if only I knew how to take a decent picture...

Yes. I like models that are repainted to the standardized grey. Uniform superiority of the Empire!

That flat bridge VSD is a little off-putting, since I'm used to the VSD's particular design eccentricities. Still, it looks great as a Star Destroyer!

I agree DUR, I like the uniform look. Lyraeus on the other hand has to stand out. How rebellious of him.

Nice, veeery very nice. I'm liking the idea of the copic cool grey liner, delighted to see that it works! I was looking at an umber liner last time I was browsing Michaels and was wondering if that would work or not. The fact that it does is opening up the notion of a few extra colours I had only been musing about. Good choice of colour though. I tried it once, but this stone grey I'm using has a hint of some lighter brown to it which gives it a slight hue, needless to say it didn't work as well as I'd like. Hmm, might have to try that camo grey.

-smirks- a Honda civic, eh? I'm not sure I can get rid of that image now. Thanks :P I actually rather like the individuality of the VSD bridge. Didn't Dominator have something like that done at Endor? The fact that ships are all unique rather than uniform, even within the confines of the same class, has always appealed to me. All I did was nip off the antenna, as you did too. It really does make it closer to an ISD refit, which I can imagine would be common.

Drilled the barrels on the Glad. I was tempted to try, but my 1mm drill bit isn't as sharp as it once was and FFG's plastic is a little on the weird side. But of course drilling the barrels makes it crit more! Miniatures respond in that mystic way (I'd never win a game of 40K if my army wasn't so nicely painted and the barrels weren't drilled). I like it. I really do. Very nicely done, mate! Can't wait to see what else ya' got in store.

Oh, as for pictures: it depends if you're using a phone or a digital camera (I use both) if you can get a delay timer, it tends to make pictures clearer as you're not depressing a button and shaking your grip any. I'll admit I totally cheat and use a tri-pod when I can, and a large piece of white poster paper which reflects the light better.

Lyraeus, I hate you I hate you I hate you, ah hay cheeeeew! :P Stylish.

I am slightly confused. . . I sense playful sarcasm Vykes.

I like my Blue Fleet.

Blue Citadel is my MC80

Blue Knight is my MC30

Blue Majesty is my Assault Frigates

Blue Rook is my Nebulon-B

and Blue Pawn is my CR90

He may consider the painting blue and displaying of the rare Calamari luxury liner as a way of waving it in his face that he doesn't have one.

I wish that I could follow suit, but - alas - I'm away from where I could follow suit.

Oh god... That looks so so wrong.

Surely this is a joke?

different strokes for different folks; leave it up to the forums to insult someones work. that's kind of low guys

personally i like the blue look, but if i were to take hold of it i'd give it a lot more highlights, lowlights and darken all the cracks and crevasses to make it pop

but to get back to the OP before this thread was hijacked, it's a nice subtle change to the VSD and Gladiator. what colour grey did you use?

*edit - nevermind i see you included that in the original post my bad

Not sure if its apparent in the blurry pic, but part of the trick of this scheme is using the same color camouflage gray in differing layers of translucency over the otherwise homogeneous base coat. i picked out random panels to be clean and bright (nearly white) and others to be warmer and darker. This is what gets the illusion of panel lines without the panel lines looking so deep you could stuff a snubfighter in them. im going to try the same trick with differing amounts of gloss/dull additive to further differentiate how the ambient light hits the panels.

The othet trick is that using the rubber eraser after lining with the copic fades the panel lines well so they look more like shadows and less cartoony.

Thanks for the friendly comments! I'll try using some form of tripod (thanks again Vykes!) once i finish up some rebel scum to blow up :)

I don't understand why people don't like it. I get people won't but I don't understand.

Keep at her. I like the Sterile look.

Is there a wash on it? It doesn't look like it from the pic so the vibrant colors are glowing to us(me). I'd wash it with a dark black, then after it dries, add some details touch ups to some areas (windows, weapons, drives, etc). Right now it looks just a little too mono colored to me. Not being jerky, just some subjctive constructive critisim.

It's also posted as the third comment in someone else's painting thread. Hijacking is generally frowned upon.

*Edit* To add a little content to this post, I do love OP's destroyers. I'm a sucker for the OG light grey look, and the Gladiator is a good match. I'll have to keep your method in mind when I finally get around to working on mine. I couldn't think of a good idea on how to get the hard-line effect, differing the panels like that is a great idea.

I did not mean to hijack, just showing my large ship paint job.

I thought about using the pale paint scheme, but I went full dark and weathered.

The Forces of the Woodgrain Subsector!

Rebel and Imperial forces face off in a strange, brown nebula.

(the rebels are in the process of repainting their ships... :P )

Looks good man. I did the same for my Imperial Forces. I repainted them in solid grey. Just looks better. Prime your flight stands black. It looks so good I will post some pics up next time I play.

Since we're on the topic of Star Destroyers...

That is a really odd paint job but I like it a lot!
