How does the interaction between these 2 work? I'm thinking you get rid of the munitions token whether or not the attack hits and munitions fail safe only kicks in when you actually have to discard the card. Am I correct on that or do I keep the token if my attack misses?
Extra munitions and munitions fail safe
You keep the token if your attack misses.
I see no reason why Extra Munitions would make Failsafe work any differently.
I'd like to hear other opinions, since I'm the noob.
With Extra Munitions, the token becomes the card for the purposes of discard. To my mind, that means that the token-acting-as-card is not discarded unless the attack hits. So Failsafe protects the token as well as the actual card.
If that's true then that really makes missiles and torpedoes a viable option ensuring none will go wasted. Of course don't get killed before getting to use them!

That was the intention when MF was released. It was an attempt to make sure missiles and torpedoes got played more often. That and Extra Munitions to make them more cost effective.
And it makes Rymer with Adv Homing Missiles, MF, and EM a total beast.
Munitions Failsafe and Extra Munitions have the same trigger. When two effects happen at the same time and they are both controlled by the same player that player can choose the order in which they resolve. In this case you are triggering Munitions Failsafe first.

I've run this set up with X2 AHM. He blew though a B-wing squad so easly.
Using the wording of munitions failsafe, would it only activate when you actual discard that card to attack (aka the second attack) because the first is discarding a token.
No it works because of the wording of Extra Munitions as well.

No.
Munitions Failsafe activates whenever you are instructed to discard a secondary weapon upgrade when attacking with it. If you don't hit you don't need to discard a card.
Extra Munitions triggers whenever you are instructed to discard an upgrade card. If you choose to do so you may discard the ordnance token instead of the card. Nothing is stopping you from discarding the card instead of the token.
When you pay the cost for making the attack, Munitions Failsafe delays paying the cost until after the attack resolves. After the attack resolves and you need to discard a card, Extra Munitions can trigger and have you discard the token in lieu of the card.
What WWHSD said.
I think the key is that Munitions Failsafe uses the word "it" as opposed to card. EM says to discard the token. The token becomes the "it" for failsafe to trigger.

It's not even that tricky. It works because the last bit of Munitions Failsafe essentially becomes the instruction to discard that triggers Extra Munitions.
