Solo Player looking for Deckbuilding Advice for a Fellowship Event

By player1399050, in Strategy and deck-building

I'm a solo player, but I've signed up for the Fellowship Event in my area.

All of my decks are tuned to solo play (Dwarves mainly because of the cards I have) and have very long turns (which would be unfun for my tablemates). I'm looking for some good, multiplayer deck ideas for the cards that I have.

2x Core

Full Mirkwood

Kazad-dum

Full Dwarrowdelf

Both Hobbit Expansions

What do you mean by has long turns? Just drawing cards / shuffling deck a bunch? I think most players are fine with that...

With your card pool, I think Dwarves would be the strongest deck you can build and Fellowship Event scenarios tend to be difficult so making a sub par deck would probably not be the best!

Edit: Besides, Dwarves can use We Are Not Idle! to give resources to other players! Your teammates may love you for that :)

I've never been to a fellowship event, but I think I'd prefer my teammate to have longer turns that do something useful then to have short turns that don't help us out.

Yes, cmabr002.

We Are Not Idle is a great tip... not in my normal deck at all.

What does your deck need to have if you are doing a multiplayer event? Like soloing, do you need to be able to do a little bit of everything as well as questing?

I would say that in general, avoiding unique cards is helpful, but if you are running Dwarves, you will probably NEED Steward of Gondor (along with several of the unique Dwarf attachments) and there will probably be a lot of people wanting to use that card. The fact that you can give teammates resources with We Are Not Idle and Parting Gifts means you should probably be the one using Steward of Gondor, though. I've made a pretty strong Dwarf deck and it would only need some minor modifications to adjust to your current card pool if you're interested.

I would say that you should be able to quest for quite a bit, fight moderately, and leave location control/treachery cancellation to others (if you are running Dwarves). It can be very difficult for a random group of players to have 4 decks that combine well together, but if you hold your own, that's all you can ask for.

That would be great, cmabr002! I'd love to look at your dwarf list.

I'd like to have a second deck on hand too. Any suggestions? I like the idea of a Rohan or Silvan deck, but I don't have any of the newer cards to support those archetypes.

I would say this Dwarf deck would work quite nicely. The gist of the deck is to get Steward of Gondor onto Ori. You can put it on Thorin in a pinch. Narvi's Belt onto same hero as Steward of Gondor and then just spam Dwarves. What's nice about this deck is that you can Sneak Attack Gandalf during any phase and then use Word of Command on him to fetch something you desperately need. Alternatively, you can play Gandalf naturally, use him for his one action and when he readies during the Refresh Phase you can use Word of Command to search for something then. Once you get a decent amount of Dwarves, the We Are Not Idle/Lure of Moria combo is amazing. Spam sneak Attack Gandalf for threat reduction, damage, or drawing, play Gandalf naturally until you have no more left, and then play Will of the West to recycle your discard pile. Will of the West can also be used to recycle your discard pile against scenarios that punish ally mustering so it's quite nice for that. I don't usually use Parting Gifts, so I'm not sure how useful it will be in this deck. You could replace 1 with a Faramir (I would definitely do this if it doesn't cause any conflicts with unique) and 1 with a Longbeard Orc Slayer as having more allies is never bad.

I think it would be very difficult to make a strong Rohan/Silvan deck with your current card pool. Those traits don't get developed until later, but perhaps someone could figure something out.

Heroes
Dáin Ironfoot
Ori
Thorin Oakenshield [Can use Balin instead, but generally Thorin is stronger)
Allies (23)
2x Fili
2x Glóin
3x Longbeard Elder
1x Erebor Battle Master
1x Kili
2x Dori
3x Erebor Hammersmith
3x Erebor Record Keeper
3x Miner of the Iron Hills
3x Gandalf
Attachments (11)
2x Hardy Leadership
1x King Under the Mountain
2x Narvi's Belt
3x Steward of Gondor
3x Legacy of Durin
Events (16)
2x Lure of Moria
2x Parting Gifts
3x Sneak Attack
3x We Are Not Idle
1x Will of the West
3x Daeron's Runes
2x Word of Command

Side Deck in case of conflicts:

1x Faramir (ally) - In case no one else is using him, it's a strong card to have

2x Longbeard Orc Slayer (in case of Orcs)

1x Erebor Battle Master (in case you need one more for more combat. Usually Word of Command allows me to find the one in my deck)

As far as a second deck is concerned, I think you could make one with location control, treachery cancellation using Elrond, Glorfindel (Spirit version), Bifur

Heroes
Bifur
Elrond
Glorfindel
Allies (31)
1x Brok Ironfist
1x Faramir
1x Beorn
3x Eagles of the Misty Mountains
1x Landroval
2x Arwen Undómiel
2x Elfhelm
2x Imladris Stargazer
3x Northern Tracker
1x Rider of the Mark
2x Erebor Hammersmith (I don't think you have enough copies for 2 in this deck and 3 in the other so you could just replace 1 in this deck with another 2 cost Lore ally if needed)
2x Gildor Inglorion
1x Haldir of Lórien
2x Master of the Forge
3x Warden of Healing
3x Gandalf
1x Radagast
Attachments (14)
2x Light of Valinor
2x Thrór's Key
2x Unexpected Courage
2x A Burning Brand
2x Asfaloth
1x Thror's Map
3x Vilya

3x A Test of Will
2x The Galadhrim's Greeting

When you are talking about Gandalf in this lists above, you are referring to the Core Set Gandalf... correct?

I like the Bifor/Glorfindel/Elrond deck a lot. Other than the Erebor Hammersmith that you noted, I think that these decks would play great 2 handed.

I should have a pretty good time playing these solo in the next couple of weeks.

Thank you!

Yes, sorry I didn't specify. In both decks, it is meant to be Core set Gandalf.

My friend and I play with more or less these decks when we play together. They complement each other very well! I am looking forward to making a Gandalf hero deck and a Rohan deck soon so I might have to dismantle the decks I listed above :(

You will more than likely end up playing a four player game at the Fellowship event. I find that playing a four player game is the perfect opportunity to play a mono-sphere deck, since you don't need your deck to cover all the bases. This enables you to use some of the most powerful cards in whichever sphere you're using. So yeah, I'd highly recommend bringing at least one mono-sphere deck with you. A mono-spirit deck is often almost mandatory to beat a four player game. I've seen a lot of four player games go down because no one wanted to be the spirit player.

Agreed with Narsil. Multiplayer lets you really focus on questing, combat, or support since you don't need to have a balanced deck. I'm always happy when someone brings a mono-spirit deck. Glorfindel, Eowyn, and Eleanor makes for a strong deck. Eowyn can be questing for 8, and you'll probably use Eleanor's ability almost every turn. Northern Tracker is such an amazing card in 4 player games.

Some other general multi-player tips:

- sentinel and ranged are amazing.

- if you are playing leadership, you need to run 3 copies of Campfire Tales. This will make people like you.

- try to avoid uniques that aren't necessary in your deck (especially Steward of Gondor).

- don't use the Hobbit Gandalf, because that blocks everyone else from playing the core Gandalf.

- have a back up plan for your heroes in case someone else steals one that you were planning to use. Maybe someone else is using Dain, so you can swap in Gloin for example.

- cards that affect "all" or "each" of anything can be very strong. Cards like Grim Resolve, Light the Beacons, Elrond's healing bonus, For Gondor, Astonishing Speed, Dawn Take You All, Lure of Moria, Hardy Leadership, and Untroubled by Darkness.
