Happy Friday - Starwars Battlefront Demo is live for all

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

The Sniper powerup is so op on Hoth...had a lot of fun with that :D

I dislike the maps for now, but maybe that gets better when I know them. A bit bland.

I think the general impression so far is that the design, graphics, and art are fantastic but the gameplay's pretty blah. May come down to a design v. gameplay preference.

I liked it, played for a loooong time yesterday night. It has been a while since I sat and played a video game for over 5 hours straight.

My biggest gripe is it seems impossible for the Rebels to win the Hoth map unless they are totally ROFL stomping the Empire. Like seriously owning them. There are simply too many Imperial Vehicles/Weapons on that map that are 1/2-shot kills. I think the AT-ATs (and maybe vehicles in general) need to have less health or be seriously damaged when the Y-Wings are summoned successfully. The map is still fun, but when you play the Rebel side, you basically know you are going to lose and just try to rack up kills instead of really worrying about the mission too much. It takes away from the theme a bit.

My only other gripe is the random spawns. Every once in a while on the Drop-pod map you will spawn and then a new pod will be coming and 3 opposing guys will spawn 5 feet from you, or spawn directly behind you. I know why they are doing Random spawns, but I wish they separated it a bit so you would't spawn, get wrecked immediately from behind/the side, and be forced to spawn again. I suppose this is something I can play around, just a minor thing that happened a few times and was a little frustrating.

Those are my complaints. After about 8 or 9 matches on Hoth I have yet to see the Rebels win. I've seen them get close, but not be able to get it done. I have seen good Imperial teams simply slaughter Rebel teams. I once got 35 kills to 5 deaths and I was fourth on my team in score.

I think the Hoth map's balance is perfect. The Empire is SUPPOSED to win, so only if the rebels are AMAZING should they be able to reverse the course of history. I love that idea.

In theory that's fun. But it makes doing any of the objectives (as either side) kind of pointless when you feel like its virtually impossible to win as Rebels.

I played this easily 20+ times last night and NEVER saw Rebels win. I'm good with it being skewed towards Empire to some degree, but I have yet to hear of a team lose as Empire.

I got discouraged as a Rebel player and said to hell with the objective and just went for kills.

Not Impressed. Enjoy your random power-up drops.

I'm so glad you have no idea what you are talking about :( . All power ups/vehicles are static spawns. They change as the map progresses. I've spent 5 hours on the game so far. I've played just about ever fps/tps you can think of, and this game here? I actually makes me feel like I'm part of a battle on Hoth or Sullust. It's a bit arcadey but that's what battlefronts MO has always been. If you want star fighter combat, wait for a stand alone game, battlefront 2s space combat was terrible and complete dribble at best. I have some respect for the air vehicles in this game because you feel like you are actually helping with strafe runs on enemy lines, and there is something satisfyingly fun watching an AT-AT fall to an A-wings lasers after the Y wings lower their shields, or tow cabling a vulnerable AT-AT.

All said and told, I didn't think this game was going to make me buy it day one from all the teasers, but the beta has delivered. Might have to get it both for the PC and buy a PS4 just to play with buds that only have consoles.

Vehicles as power up, seriously? Remember in Empire Strikes Back when Luke jetpacked his way up to an AT-AT, oh what, you mean they didn't have jetpacks in Empire Strikes back? They why in this game does everyone have a freaking jetpack like they are all Jango Fet? Also you got a PS4.

Lets just say I might not be an expert on game development but I will say this, games 5-10 years ago had better quality than now. Heck look at this current console generation (which I am skipping) two year in and developers are already saying that the hardware can't handle their games. PS2 is the best Play station. Sony made a PS3 to try and compete with the XB360 and it failed miserable. The Nintendo Wii U has the best selection of this generation but who want's a pad for a console? The XB1 was made because Sony was making a PS4 and the PS4 was made because the PS3 flopped. Bottom line is anything on the WiiU XB1 or PS4 is not worth the $60 price tag, and that is also why I am more into table top games instead of AAA market garbage video games.

PS3 was very popular due to its Bluray access at a time when players themselves were still very expensive, and had a lot of popular exclusive titles like the Uncharted and God of War games.

Shadow of Mordor and Arkham Knight were both amazing games for XB1, though Knight was famously a disaster on PC. I'm playing through Tomb Raider right now (a free release through the Xbox Live program) and having a blast with it.

I only have about 15 minutes with the Battlefront beta, spent entirely on the Survival mode, but it scratches a Star Wars FPS itch something fierce. It's not a perfect recapturing of the combat in the films, but it shouldn't be. It's trying to capture the feeling of the Rebel troopers vs Stormtroopers. I'm stoked to try out the Hoth battle, as that looks nuts.

I've played the beta for a good 4 hours and found the gameplay to be meh. The graphics, sound, and even menu layouts were all extremely well done in my opinion. The game looks SO good on 'ultra' presets at 1080p 60fps. I've been killed numerous times because I was looking at the beautiful snow covered ground on Hoth, admiring how you can see the sparkle of individual snowflakes.

Yeah the spawning I found a crap-shoot on Sullust. Sometimes I'd appear right next to enemies also spawning.

Also, and this might just be me, but is anyone else finding themselves way worse than they normally are at shooting games? FPS's are what I play most often, and I'd consider myself pretty good at them (Halo, Titanfall, etc) but for some reason I can't hit a barn door in this game.

It's at it's worst in Walker Assault. I can't hit people 3 feet in front of me, yet I can get easily picked off in 1/2 shots by someone halfway across the map!

The game looks amazing and once we have all the levels and types, it'll be great fun to play, especially with friends. But right now being terrible at it is really hampering my enjoyment.

I struggled early on too. Part of it is ranking up and getting the power-ups, The other part is you have to lead your target a bit more in this game, which is challenging if you aren't used to it.

I do think the Cycler rifle may be a bit too powerful on the Hoth map. Lots of open areas and if you get on the giant snow mound/hill with the jump pack you can camp for long periods of time. The only thing that makes it okay-ish is both teams can do it. It's just a bit boring. On the Sullust map there's fewer places where you can squat and dominate with the Cycler because the map is smaller and there's more varied terrain.

I think the Hoth map's balance is perfect. The Empire is SUPPOSED to win, so only if the rebels are AMAZING should they be able to reverse the course of history. I love that idea.

Played this mode for several hours yesterday evening and it is possible for the rebels to win. It takes a significant amount of forethought, though, because the rebels have to save all of their powerups (especially orbital strikes) and air support for when the AT-ATs are vulnerable. Played 1 game as the rebels took down both AT-ATs in the first Y-Wing bombing run! Maintaining air superiority is super important for the rebels. I do admit, though, that it feels more difficult playing rebel.

How does he get the idea the PS3 was a flop? Last gen was pretty even, at least in Europe, while Sony had a huge lead in Japan (if you don't look at the Wii which wasn't really a factor of core gaming later on).

That makes sense, but when you are constantly teamed with Randoms, that makes it even harder. I saw a couple games where the last AT-AT was at less than 10% health, but the round ended. I do think its possible if everyone knows what they are doing and are better than the other team, but if the Rebels aren't organized enough or if the Imperial team is better, it's a pretty easy Imperial victory.

I could be wrong, it may be fine. I just found myself feeling like the times I had to play Rebel were a penance I had to pay so I could play as Empire. =)

Good for you being on a team that did it though. You are the first I heard that was able to win as Rebels. Honestly if they keep the difficulty that way, the Rebels should get MAJOR points for the win.

Super serious question here:

HOW DO YOU SQUAT?!?!?!

I"m playing Xbox One and cannot figure out how to do it for the life of me.

I'm using an xbox controller on PC and for me you press B.

PC! No, XBOX! Noooo Ps4!!!

Really? We've waited over ten years for this game and and its amazing!! Even if you hate the gameplay, look at what they made for us. Sounds, sights, cinematic experiences, an incredible competitive setup in Drop Zone, Luke and Vader dueling in the middle of a huge battle!! Battlefront has the possibility to become much more!!

By the way it's a beta, the most downloaded open beta to date, that uses our experiences to mod the games final release, ie: weapon power, faction power, and any other qualms.. Please use this time to actually voice your opinion to Dice !!

So, I got to play a little of the battlefront beta today. Yeah, it's kinda' fun, I'm not so prideful that I can't admit that. Do I still think the lack of space battles is annoying? Yes. Do I think it's worth 70 bucks? No.

But, is it fun?

Yeah, if the price is knocked 20-25 bucks then you're getting your money's worth.

Good thing AAA's are still only 60 and less if you have a PC

The default is "b" but if you go into settings and switch your trooper settings to alternate "b" is punch and clicking the right stick is crouch.

So it goes from B to R3 and if you then switch it back... R3-B2

That's your opinion dude. The battlefield franchise is one of the most successful first person shooters of all time. I don't know how one could compare the old PC games with the titles they are currently putting out. The classics were great, 1942 was awesome! But you have to respect how amazing the new engine and game play is. Let's keep it positive and hope they can work out some of the kinks.

anyway, this is a pretty good example of how to look like a stealth marketer

Here's how not to

Very, very few games anymore really offer you the full experience for $60. DLC and microtransactions to cover the increased costs of development are commonplace.

I mean, look at Fallout 4. Sure, you can get the $60 version. But if you want the full experience, you need the Pip Boy edition.

At least I do. I solidly need a Pip Boy.

Does no one realize that battlefront is going to have free DLC?

As much as I am between meh and dislike about this latest installment of Star Wars Battlefront I will give them credit that there will be no microtransactions in this game. Still I have given up on AAA gaming all together, and I WON' TOUCH mobile gaming, with the exception of Hearthstone but that was a Free2Play PC game first.

It's tabletop gaming, just a massive amount of micro transactions though?

The Walker assault game is so awesome.

This game is exactly what I was hoping for. For anyone who is a starwars fan, I can't possibly imagine them not enjoying this game.

Get an at-st and start firing missiles and canons into the front door of the rebel base while tie fighters shreak overhead, blasting green and red lasers between x wings.

Its amazing. The gameplay is fairly basic. Which is a bonus, it keeps it simple so people who aren't amazing at video games can keep up. Like me.

I think the best part of the game the sounds. The blasters sound cool, the at-st sounds amazing. The thermal imploder is awesome, the tie fighters and interceptors sound really cool.

Is there a difference between the ships? I was expecting the interceptor to be faster and more agile than the x wing but it doesn't seem to be. The only differences seem to ve boost(imp) vs shield(reb) and fragility - tie fighters and interceptors go down much easier. Plus the firepower, x wings seem most powerful, then interceptors, then a wings, then tie fighters.

Despite that, I love piloting tie fighters. Tie fighters and at-sts are so much fun.

Stoked for this game. If I hadn't played it and I read this and other discussions about the game I'd think it wasn't that impressive. Don't listen to the Whining nerds. It is.

The gameplay is meh.

The power ups kill the immersion for me: They spent all that time on snowflakes and then put a little translucent coin floating above it. WTF?

Bored of Walker Assault. Really bored of Survival (played it once - that was enough). That leave the drop pod thing which is fun, but doesn't feel like Star Wars so much as a really good Battlefield or Arma mod.

It makes me excited to see what things will look like when we get more Star Wars games, but I'm not real likely to buy Battlefront: A minute single-player game tied into Battlefield with blasters isn't enough to lure me in at $60.

Just doesn't leave me with the same feeling of, "Wow," as the Destiny beta did - which ran for much longer. And still resulted in a meh game, but at least it has a substantial single-player mode and much better game play.

Maybe in five or ten years we'll finally get the Battlefield 3 we deserve.

ETA: What we have is an expensive, pretty, stripped down Star Wars-themed World of Tanks. If this were FTP like World of Tanks, I would be much more likely to get it after launch. As it is, like World of Tanks, I might pick it up and play it for an hour or two a day for about a week... once a year... and then get bored and do something else.

I enjoyed it. It's not perfect but... Could you make a better FPS? I know I couldn't. Customization of weapons might be cool. The card system is... Odd but seemingly effective. The one thing I do really like is the style by which you acquire the upgrade cards. As a veteran of the Battlefield franchise (as far back as 1942) it pains me that the latest games make you go though the motions of getting upgrades you'll never use. The idea of getting points that you can use to unlock upgrades that fit your play style is right up my alley. I still haven't managed to grab a fighter power up and I've maxed out lvling up so its gotta happen some time.

One thing I'm not a fan of is the randomness power ups. It reminds me of the way you get power ups in Halo 4 which I didn't like either. I'd rather be able to select either Smart Rocket, Orbital Strike or Imploder as my power up. That's my only qualm but this is a beta. My buddy and I got a good roll out of it tonight and we were both generally happy with what we saw.

That one-shot projectile weapon that looks like a Hunting Rifle from Fallout though eh? Daaaaayum.
