Little character group - unfairly huge obligation?

By SolkaTruesilver, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I guess i just need some hard facts to get a perspective.

One thing i am often struggling with as a GM is to properly price rewards and costs.

There isn't a hard rule about how much credits 1 point of Debt Obligation is worth. This is because Obligation is a measure of possible stress on the characters, not the actual monetary value. So, someone might only owe 1000 credits, but have it at a 20 Obligation level while another player in the same party might owe 50,000 credits, but only have it at a level of 5. Part of it is a representation of how often the debt collector might come calling, or how much that debt weighs on the mind of the character, leading to stress in the party (loss of Strain Threshold).

Thanks a lot guys. You are helping.

Okay. What if the players somewhat confuse Obligation with "Overall game objective"? Ya know, they feel this dangling problem HAS to be resolved, and want to use their money/ressources to fulfill their obligation.

Do i dangle fun stuff at the price of more obligation..? Or i find ways to have more accrue in-game?

You could explain to the players that this isn’t meant to be something to be completely eliminated, that Obligation is intended to be a way to help make the game more interesting by allowing unexpected twists to pop up.

Otherwise, if they really want to completely get rid of that Obligation to Teemo, maybe that comes in the form of a different obligation to some other crime lord who can “help” with the Teemo “problem”.

Or maybe they kill Teemo off, and now they have a slightly different group Obligation, where they have a price on their heads put there by the Hutt Grand Council — of course, for the right job and the right amount of money, other Hutts might be inclined to look the other way….

In an EotE game, someone is almost always going to owe someone else a favor — or three. Or lots of money. Or they’re on the run from some bad guy. Or someone they defeated will come back to haunt them.

IMO, all of those are potential ways of gaining more Obligation.

There is nothing wrong with them reducing their Obligation over time. The lowest it can be reduced is to 5 total, so, something is always nagging at them, it just might not be something very big any more. So, if they pay off their debts, no reason the HAVE to get another Obligation to fill it. However, if they should reduce their Obligation to nearly nothing, you, as the GM, could use Obligation as a way to get them to use/take something they need now, for a problem later (like getting Obligation for dealing with a Crime Boss to get back that prototype blaster rifle as now the Crime Boss is going to want something, he just didn't say what it would be...).
