Rumour quest lock

By Cursain, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Recently, I purchased all the Hero and Monster expansions + Manor of Ravens, so my Descent collection is complete again. Of course I added the Rumour Quests to the growing stack without closely examining them. Our group wanted to mix things this time so I'm not playing OL for the current campaign.

We decided to start the Labyrinth of Ruin, and after the Introduction was completed and won by the OL, he took us on one of the new Rumour quests, and won. The win condition for that was to draw an additional Rumour card.....ouch. It just so happens that many of the new Rumour quests, if won by the OL, allow him to draw an additional Rumour card. Of the three Rumour quests he can take us on, two have this win condition.

I tell you, early in a campaign being taken on back to back to back Rumour quests is going to set the OL up big time. I wonder if they continue making Hero and Monster packs, if the OL award of drawing additional Rumour cards will be the new norm.

I'd like to read the thoughts other OL's have concerning balance, and the risk of tipping the scales early in the campaign for the OL. As all of us are aware, Rumour quests early in the campaign, before heroes earn some experience and loot, can be extremely difficult.

Rumor quest victories do not benefit the heroes except by preventing the OL reward. What they do is provide the opportunity for more loot and more shop steps before the interlude- forget the win and go for the gold- that way, the rumor quest ends up providing roughly equal benefit. If you can win AND search, all the better.

Sadly, the idea that rumor quest victories do not benefit the heroes except by preventing the OL reward is only a mechanic that is part of the H&M rumor quests. The mini-campaign rumor quests provide significant rewards for the heroes if they win -> too significant!

For example, in Lair of the Wyrm side quests the heroes can get very powerful relics such as the Aurium Plate, and in Act II they get an experience point, which is just insane as a rumor quest reward! Makes me tempted at times to just flat out remove these side quests from the rumor deck.

I think FFG realized this was unfair and changed it for their newer content. I wish they would ret-con it for the older rumor quests though.

This is true (the box rumors favor the heroes much more in terms of victory) but since he said he just had Manor and a bunch of H&M packs, it only makes sense that the repeated rumors are H&M rumors.

I thought you could only do one rumor quest per act. If I wrong, I can't remember why I thought that.

It is possible you are thinking that because each of the "small box" rumor quests says, "if you played [either of the other rumor quests from this expansion], discard this card and get a new one."

However, it only ever refers to the specific other quests from that expansion. You are free to play 1 trollfens, 1 lair of the wyrm, and one manor rumor, along with any number of hero and monster rumors as you have in your hand.

I think you mean "1 Rumor card from his hand, at a time stated on the card, during each Campaign phase " and not during each act.
