Autothrusters and Auxiliary firing Arc

By shotbyscott, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Let me see if i have this correct as I may have been playing it wrong.

Ships with an Aux firing arc (e.g firespary or YV-666) can use the Aux firing arc to negate Autothrusters.

The reason I ask is we have played it with just primary firing arc. i.e turrets and auxiliary outside the primary arc Autothrusters kicked in.

But I think after re reading the FAQ we were doing to wrong and only turrets (also as a primary weapon) are affected.

"Autothrusters

Autothrusters does not trigger if the ship equipped
with Autothrusters is inside the attacker’s primary or
auxiliary firing arc at Range 1–2.

If a ship with a turret weapon attacks a ship equipped
with Autothrusters, first measure closest point to
closest point to determine range, then use the printed
firing arc on the attacker to determine whether the
defender is in the attacker’s firing arc."

Ships with an Aux firing arc (e.g firespary or YV-666) can use the Aux firing arc to negate Autothrusters.

It is the other way around, if the ship carrying them is outside the Primary or the Aux firing arc, or at range three, then Auto-thrusters activate.

Any ability that referes to firing arc, without mentioning "primary" or "secondary", includes both primary and secondary arcs. An arc is an arc is an arc...

Autothrusters won't trigger at Range 1-2, but will still be in effect at Range 3, just like a primary arc.

Ok, I have the same question about the Autothrusters. So if a ship with Autothrusters is with range 1-2 of a ship with a turret, it CANNOT us its Autothrusters.

Correct??

Correct??

Not correct. There are 2 conditions that trigger Thrusters. 1) Getting shot at when you are out of your opponent's arc. 2) Getting shot at Range 3.

If either of these conditions are met then Thrusters trigger.

A ship getting shot at by a Falcon will always have Thrusters trigger if no part of that ship is within the firing arc.

Incorrect.

Are you in the attackers firing arc or auxiliary arc which is still a firing arc? Are you within R2 of the attacker? Unless the answer to BOTH is yes then autothrusters will be active.

Alright so for "...if you are beyond Range 2 or..." that means when my character is defending and I'm in which ever arc they are firing at, if I am at Range 3, I can change a blank to an evade.

Then for "...or outside the attacker's firing arc.." regards towards turrets and etc. At Range 1-3, I can change a blank to an evade.

yep.

just don't forget the "Once per opportunity" rule

OK, so the .or outside the attacker's firing arc even applies to a turret weapon like on the falcon. The firing arc are still the v shaped lines on the front of the ship not a 360 circle around the vessel.

I only ask for clarification because i play with a guy who thinks he knows it all and the rules get questioned a lot.

It's just people who simplify things.

They even tried naming it "360' arc" ships in my meta here

But rules are rules, "TURRET" icon allows it to attack outside arc. and Yes, another thing here.

FAQ specificaly states that if the closest point is outside of arc, the attack is outside of arc.

Except that Range and Arc are determined independently. If a ship with Autothrusters is being attack outside of the Arc at R2 yet has a portion of its base inside the attacker's arc at R3 the Autothrusters do NOT trigger. The ship is inside of R2 and is inside a firing arc.

And weird enough a ship can be at one range band in arc, and a different one out of arc. Or at least at one point in time they could. I thought they resolved that though but I don't remember how.

There's nothing 'weird' about it. Measuring Arc and measuring range are not the same thing.

Wow, this thread looks like it got complicated.

Autothrusters kick in under two circumstances:

1. Outside arc of attacking ship

or

2. Beyond range 2 of attacking ship (i.e. range 3)

Arc = That printed wedge on the cardboard base...to include primary or secondary arc.
