400pt epic vs 300pt epic. Also TLT in title for clicks

By EbongHawk, in X-Wing

So there isn't much in the way for epic where I live (or where most of you live it sounds like) but my buddy and I have pretty much come to the conclusion that 400pts is just more fun than 300pts. Different strokes for different folks and all that nice stuff but if you haven't tried and you like epic you ought to. 300pts feels very constrictive (may it is supposed to?) and my experience wither 500+ points is sooooooo much moving. Not saying that a collection war can't be fun but I have had a great time at 400 and in my opinion (not that is necessarily worth anything) is that 400pts is the ideal spot to play epic at when you consider everything.

Also did anyone hear that they released this car called uhhh... "Twin Laser Turret?" Haha just for kicks.

I admit I only clicked on this thread because TLT was in the title.

Personally I think even 300 points drags a bit. I like quicker games, though a 300 point epic game every once in a while is fun as long as you're with a group that's fine with playing past midnight. :D

Played a 400pt Team Epic tournament (200pts apiece for each teammate) and everyone had a freaking blast - we all wanted MORE time for our matches and didn't feel like they dragged on at all. Of course, the planning phase workload was halved so that helped, I'm sure. I also remember thinking that 300pts just wouldn't have been nearly enough because we couldn't get everything we wanted in 400!

I find 300 point epic with each side having epic ships is just right for shorter games.
Our previous 300 point games had too much moving, because I'd fly 7 academies and 12 alpha squints...

I can see it. In 300 points with mandatory epic ships you are likely to only have 5-10 other ships (and then only if you take no large base ships).

400 points is probably a happy medium where you get a nice sized fleet, some fun toys and an epic ship. Will be even more likely to drift towards this when the Gozanti releases and you could potentially play 2 Gozantis or Raider/Gozanti. At 300 point you could do it, but it isn't really viable.

In 300 points I have found that you don't really split up your forces into compact little strike forces which have different tasks, I think it would be much more likely at 400.

On the topic of TLTs, they are really bad for epic since Epic ships have no real defence against them. I really wish reinforce now reduced damage by 1, instead of adding an evade result. Sadly epic will never be balanced against douchebagginess, just hope you alway play against reasonable people.

Even then - you're probably likely to be able to target the other section of the ship.

The last Epic game I played I made the mistake of saying that I had 8 TLT cards. I had to face 8 TLT ships. >_>

200pt Team Standard tournament coming up in my area in a few weeks and a couple of douchebags keep threatening to do that.

I'm telling you man, just run it yourself. Or run 8 Sigmas or something stupid and out troll them by just wiping Y-Wings.

Better yet, run 7 Sigmas and 6 Advanced Cloaking Devices.

I might just do that. Also had good results so far with BBBBBBBBZZ, and tempted to roll with a gaggle of Lambdas and two TIE aces.

I'm wondering this because I just got my Raider in the mail, and I love it. The X-files title for the Advanced is sweet, and after some discussion my buddy determained that with proper use of Ion weapons, and by maneuvering to the blind spot with arc-dodgers, the corvette might be able to be taken down by it's points worth in fighters.

While great for me because a ship fewer people perceive as op is more likely to be able to be used (and my Scum buddy has no huge ships, though large ships from here to Kalamazoo make up for it a bit) in friendly epic games, I gotta ask: are huge ships bad?

I really want to pull the corvette out in a game, and I figured that it would act as heavy artillery. In my head, I saw it ionising and criting small ships with a barrage of long-range ion batteries while the arc-dodgers and heavies pick the ion'ed ships apart, but reading the comments it looks like the fighters just inflict the death of a thousand cuts on the huge ship. I know that the heavy turbolasers are great for shelling other 0-1 agility huge ships, but it's mix and match stats here and all guns cost points.

Are huge ships a decent option? Is one better than the other? Does ramming always work?

And if huge ships are a solid choice, am I better off focusing fighters or other capital ships early in the game?

(Edit. I did not get my Raider in the main. I got it in the mail, you know; the thing with the letters and junk.)

I only came for the TLT, well played. Will read actual thread later...

Well huge ships were never that good to begin with. The only thing they got going for them is the recover action. The only thing good about TLTs is that they are almost guaranteed to do 2 damage to huge ships however you could say that about any ship. Why not take TIE advances with AC or how about B-wings or a shuttle with AC and have the potential of getting a 3rd hit. TLTs are not the anti huge ship weapon, there upgrade card pretty much reads deal 2 damage to defending ship which makes TLTs practically an anti every ship weapon. The only thing that has hopes of evading them are ships with autothrusters and at least 2 agility.

Just dropped in to TLT this quality title.

I play narrative games with my friends, which are often balanced, and the points are anything from 50 to 100 to 150 to 200 to 300 to 400. One day I intend to do a full 1000 point murderthon, complete with reinforcements a'la the GR75 campaign (if you lose a PS9 then you get a PS4 reinforcement, then PS2, then 1 if it's there).

Haha so that is the formula, you simply have to put tlt in any title and it is instantly more successful... I have you now. Also I think team 400 is a great idea and if we had a reliable (and tolerable) duo to play with I'm sure I'd agree that splitting the workload would speed the game up.

Epic simply does not lend itself to the min/max 100pt competitive mindset. I think 400pts could be a nice sweetspot with about 200pts of epic ships per side once the Gozer finally shows up.

I think Epic is great fun so long as you can keep the lists fairly balanced. Both sides need to have a comparable amount of points spent on Epic, Munitions, Aces, Generic Squads. My suggestion (YMMV of course)

For a first Epic Game try this for each side:

120-130 pt Corvette (overloading the corvettes with too many upgrades is a common mistake they aren't that tough)

20-30 pt of Munitions max (alpha strikes are fun and leads to tactical decisions about deployment and order of engagement)

100 pt of Small Ship Generics (make squads of mooks, leads to faster and more "authentic" gameplay)

40-60 pt of "Aces" (try not to clutter the field with Uniques. Pick one or two named pilots to fashion your encounter around)

Here's an example of what I am suggesting (although even lighter on "Aces")

CR90 Corvette (Fore) (50)
Han Solo (2)
Ion Cannon Battery (6)
Quad Laser Cannons (6)
Sensor Team (4)
Gunnery Team (4)
CR90 Corvette (Aft) (40)
Shield Technician (1)
Ion Cannon Battery (6)
Green Squadron Pilot (19) x2
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Wired (1)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Lieutenant Blount (17)
Veteran Instincts (1)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
Red Squadron Pilot (23) x4
Plasma Torpedoes (3)
Total: 300
You want to avoid situations where all your ships have different pilot skills or tons of unique abilities or upgrades. Simplify and aim for balanced fun rather than building just to win.

Well it is common knowledge that Wave 7 was the wave of the turret.

Oh and there was some silly looking new bomber for the imps that was just as effective as their smaller bomber. Sorry imperials you got the raw end of the deal on this one :P .

Look you Rebels, as 'I recognize you as one of their breed, should come with how many TLT you can afford. Finally, this is the hour for my 5 x Alpha + AT list. And you Rebels will suffer in pain and frustration.

OK, OP, you get a Like just for "Also TLT in title for clicks," haha

Someone's got turret envy again. :P

Don't worry, I'm sure that special forces TIE will give you access to those illicit upgrades soon enough. FFG can't keep dissing Imperials like it has with Wave 7 through 8 ;)
