You know I was looking for this thread a year ago. Heh, don't need it now, but atleast I realize why I never Houseruled to drop the Pen 7 Hellgun in RT to Pen 3-4 from DH and IH. I do like the idea that a character has to carry around the 10kg backpack to get the Pen 7, but it isn't stated in the rules, so sticking with what is listed. To many Houserules makes a game confusing. Besides, the Errata fixed the errors I needed anyways. Thanks for bringing this thread back from the dead to ease my wondering thoughts.

Hellguns in Dark Heresy were Pen 3, and even the special Forge World variety was only Pen 4, so I suspect this is a typo.
First of all, the Hellguns in Rogue Trader is not the same pattern as Dark Heresy hellguns.
Secondly, both the Lucius-pattern Hellgun of Rogue Trader and the Cadian-pattern Hellgun of Dark Heresy: Ascension are Pen 7.
You are probably thinking of the D'laku Crusade-pattern Hellgun from Dark Heresy: The Inquisitor's Handbook , which has Pen 4 .
However, the D'laku Crusade-pattern Hellgun has 10 higher Clip size ( 40 compared to 30 ) and twice the range (100 compared to 50) of the Cadian-pattern Hellgun . The D'laku Crusade-pattern Hellgun also only have a scarcity of Scarce , compared to the Rare availability of the Cadian-pattern Hellgun .
Lower damage (+3 instead of +4) but higher Clip size and longer range, higher availability on the planet that created it, sounds exactly like something that is mass-produced for regular troopers (Skitarii).
tldr; I don't think that's a typo.
