Cracken Heads

By Kodiak3d, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I was just playing around with the squad builder and came up with this little idea:

CRACKEN HEADS

Airen Cracken creates actions in combat that can be passed around.

99 points

PILOTS

Airen Cracken (20)
Z-95 Headhunter (19), Veteran Instincts (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (25)
A-Wing (19), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Chardaan Refit (-2), Marksmanship (3), Autothrusters (2), Push the Limit (3)

Tycho Celchu (31)
A-Wing (26), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Chardaan Refit (-2), Squad Leader (2), Autothrusters (2), Push the Limit (3)

Green Squadron Pilot (23)
A-Wing (19), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Chardaan Refit (-2), Marksmanship (3), Push the Limit (3)

The idea is that Cracken goes first in combat and grants a free action to Tycho. Tycho can then use the Squad Leader action to pass that action to either Green Pquadron Pilot (and then use PtL himself if he wants). Either green Green Squadron Pilot can then use the passed action, as well as PtL themselves if they wish.

It just seems to me a good way to get all your attackers into the best possible positions before combat really gets moving.

Thoughts? Did I miss something?

Marksmanship is a waste unless you are attacking more than once per round. Those GSPs would much rather have Juke, Outmaneuver, or Wingman

I was debating between that and Outmaneuver. I'll probably switch it out.

so youre planning on flying in formation...with Awings????

Wingman coupled with PTL on GSPs is fantastic, don't knock the idea before you try it. It gives you 2 actions and an open dial for the next turn. Or K-Turn and no stress.

Ya have fun with that. you're going to be gimmicky, doing no damage and susceptible to brute squads

Oh ye of little faith. A's will surprise you. True they don't throw a lot of dice but they are , or can be, very effective. With Cracken's ability, Tycho's SL and PTL on the Greens you have the option of an action after combat starts, the ability to shed stress before your next move and a boost after other movement. All in all not a bad synergy.

Like interceptors they require a little more thought before movement but they are not pushovers. In fact, I'll try this out in tomorrow's game. Should be interesting.

Also, while you'll want to keep Tycho close to Cracken, the Greenies can wander a bit further away since Squad Leader is range 1-2.

Susceptible to what brute squads exactly? While I might not be a fan of Cracken or this loadout on Tycho, I am a big supporter of Green Squad A-Wings and believe they are a viable choice in the meta and are well equipped to deal with most threats.

Granted...however Im not sure a list composed of only four ships with 2 hull each is the best way to go. one maybe two wings can be effective

Slick redirect there ace, those brute squads eh? Let's not forget the 2 shields that go along with the 2 hull, or the fact that you don't have to be "gimmicky" with wingman and could run something like outmaneuver - which absolutely wrecks some of your "brute squads" i.e. Bs and Ys. The list has PS advantage over swarms, 4Bz, 4TLT, and is maneuverable enough to block high PS ships enough to foul up their game plan. It's effective.

First of all it wasnt a redirect...slick. it was an observation given whats been going on at larger and elite tournaments...slick

second of all the OP asked for criticism which i posted...slick

if you really dont know the Brutes that are out there...slick I'll tell ya...Han, miranda, dash, et al have high hull/high damage output/high damage mitigation...slick. consequently...slick..two dice...even if they are modified dice...wont do the trick...slick

so quit trolling and read the original criticism as such and not an offense...slick

Reread Shirako's response. He called you ace not slick. Said the redirect was slick. If you're going to get your hackles up, do it for the right reason.

Oh no I realize that Im an ace. I figured he was just acknowledging my status in the X-wing. Did he mean as a derogatory statement???

slick denotes lack of integrity or deception which I did not portray in any of my posts

No, in this case slick = smooth. The question was asked "Susceptible to what brute squads exactly?" which you didn't initially answer. No reflection on your integrity.

I assumed that a frequent and knowledgeable player would know the current brutes...my bad. I shouldn't assume people have common sense

If you haven't noticed the meta got flipped, Falcons are notably absent, Miranda is hardly a "brute" with no major wins under her belt, a MAX of 2 damage per turn, and largely untested capabilities. If you have trouble with Dash...then your issue lies in your list construction. List building without any answer for a PTL monster like Dash or Fel is foolhardy and you wlll be punished in a competitive setting for overlooking that. Everything has answers and counters. Some of us choose to find those, while others write them off as "brutes", netlists, autowin etc. and would rather cry about game imbalance.

I never "cried" about imbalances

That's for my opponents whom I leave like chaff in my wake

Well...this certainly escalated.

I just thought it would be a fun build to play.

That's all that matters. Play what's fun and awings are if anything fun to fly

I love it when people internet rage.

Flew this build tonight. Didn't fair well vs Guri, Cobra and Palob. Cracken was one shotted by Guri (direct hit) one of the greens got one shotted by Cobra with Opportunist ar R1. Palob with tlt and tactician was screwing with everyone.

Tying Tycho down with SL is a mistake I think. He should be free to raise hate and discontent on his own. Cracken's ability is nice but his survivability needs to be boosted.

Green dice were horrible tonite. Tycho took 3 hits at range 3 through a rock from Guri in the second game. Five dice and not a single evade. Jake took damage with autothrusters when he rolled 3 eyeballs vs 1 hit.

I didn't fly badly just not optimally. The tlt with tactician caused problems early in the game before Tycho got him. My mistake for not singling him out earlier for Tycho's attention.

That was the whole point I was trying to make in response to the OP. A-wings really want to fly around and be that annoying mosquito that you just cant quite smack. Cracken becomes an anchor to them if youre flying in formation or staying close to him. Once he dies (he will be the first target) then the synergy of the list breaks down and youre stuck with awings that were once flying in formation and are now in a bad spot. I think its a list thats fun to fly in a friendly but it may struggle in a competitive setting

Kinda funny, really. I'm working on a build with Cobra/Opportunist and Palob/Tactician, lol.

It wasn't last nite.
