Using Wave 2 ships in tournaments/leagues before release

By Admiral Terghon, in Star Wars: Armada

Now that we have a handful of Wave 2 ships out in the player base, people are going to want to use them. Casual gaming, of course they can, should, and will. But what about tournaments or organized leagues? Are the Wave 2 ships unbalancing if only one player has access? Specifically, are the large ships unbalancing?

I'm curious about the following scenarios:

  • Player has a minor ship from Sullust: the MC-30 or Raider.
  • Player has squadrons from Sullust
  • Player has a large ship from Sullust
  • Player has multiples of minor ships and/or squadrons
  • Player has at least one large ship and minor ships or squadrons from Sullust.

Do these ships give any particular advantage that would be unfair (aside from opponent being unfamiliar with the new stuff)? My opinion is that the first two wouldn't be a problem, the third might be, but probably not. The last two seem like there's a definite advantage.

For casual play, As long as everyone agrees.. Shouldn be an issue..

For a league/tournament.. The models are not legal until release.. So can not be used.

Also, loaning out a card or two wouldn't be a bad idea. Get a chance to learn how to counter the latest toys.

Does owning them give an advantage? MASSIVELY yes, mostly due to the cards more than the ships.

I certainly wouldn't them them be used until general release. The thought of only one player having Ackbar in a league....eugh. Ditto with some other stuff like Turbolaser Re-routes, APT's and so on.

Casual games....fair enough, whatever gets agreed. But it is 100% a major advantage.

It is in the tournament rules.

Legal ships are those that have been released. These are in the pre-release state

X-wing has done this twice before (actually more like four times counting gen con sales). The ships are not legal until everyone has access to them. That simple. It's nothing new.

I would think for league games it's cool if both players agree. In my case, having both a Home One and ISD, I'm happy to offer my opponent the opportunity to field one large ship if they will face the opposing fatcion's large ship. This way we have a balanced game, and also the opportunity to play with new toys!

If it is a friendly, then so be it; but not until they are widely available should it be in a tourney.
