Is there a rules update somewhere that says what exactly contain does? Does it only effect crits that deal a face up card. Would it effect nym of ACM?
Contain
IIRC, standard crit only.
Someone told me in what in one of the preview articles, and that it does just stop the standard critical effect. I hope they change that before it hits shelves. Sure would be nice to stop those ACMs....
It would be too good if it stopped all crit effects. Many crit effects are expensive.
Just the standard is fine enough.
The insert with the ISD says that contain stops you from having to flip a damage card face up from a standard critical.
Standard crit only.
So ACMs, Overload Pulse, and even APT and XX9 still work.
ooo didn't think about xx-9!
It's weird it doesn't stop APT. That only deals one card, all it does is ignore shields. It would be much better if it worked against APT as it would make Contain a nice counter to it.

Well APT is its own separate critical effect and is actually a bit different. A single die triggering can actually deal three cards of damage provided lack of shields / defenses. 2 for the hit/crit icons, plus one face up for the critical effect (its actually dealt in ADDITION to the damage rolled).
The standard crit is just the first damage assigned to hull is dealt face up. It does not change the amount of damage done.
The closest thing to the standard crit is XX9. Its simply a better version that lets you deal the first two cards face up. But, since it is not the standard, contain does not stop it at all.
Needa seems like 2 points well spent on an ISD to me.
Okay, I can understand APTs and ACMs giving you pause, but with all of the Turbolaser options out there, do you really expect to see XX-9 all that often? Because I don't. I barely saw them beforehand, and now, I see Turbolaser Reroute and Slaved Turrets being the ones talked about.
It's fine as is, representing the innate toughness of the target.
If you're loading up special weapons though you still crit (and lets not forget crits can be devastating) because you've spend the points.

This is how I see it. If you spend points on a crit upgrade, then you deserve to get it. It's the same reason that Advanced Projectors help mitigate XI7 at least a little. Screwing players out of points they've spent sucks.
its good for stopping that 1 crit which say knocks down your front shields, or that dreaded comm noise to speed 0 on the first shot of the turn etc
Is damage from hitting rocks, etc a standard crit?
No. That doesn't cause a crit, it gives you a faceup card. Very different.

It's certainly not a bad idea. I mean it's certainly better to have a defense token than not having one, but I think the idea on FFG's behalf was that a "full" four tokens on a large ship might be too good defensively, but giving a little half-strength defense token like Contain certainly doesn't hurt and you can always do neat things with it (change it to something better with Needa, spend them with Vader, etc.).
Ya contain is crap. Use it to fuel better effects.
Contain has it's uses. Suppose Luke Skywalker is at your rear firing into you. You can effectively mitigate him. Pretty cool ability there, considering he is quite nasty.
Additionally, it is an extra defense token, and that on it's own is significant. If you have to forfeit a token, or trade one for an evade.... you have extra options.
Also contain can be used every turn. That is 6 (or 7) hits that will never happen.
I like it.

You still get the damage card, just not face up. Pretty sure, but I don't have the contain wording in front of me.
