Hey all ! Harbinger advice please .

By jimmyfield, in Talisman

Me and my friends play it but find it way too hard , any advice or rules that could be hard to understand . Do you roll on the harbinger when he summoned over during an event or only if you land on him ? Thanks guys and gals

Hi Jimmy,

To answer your question, the Harbinger (or the Hamburger, as we call him in our games), can only be encountered if a player lands on him - not when he lands on a player.

When you say "way too hard" are you referring to the fact that it is too hard to understand the rules or too hard to play with the rules?

  • In terms of play difficulty, we've found that by using all the corner expansions a bit skillfully, you can really do a decent job of playing "dodge the hamburger" just by jumping from region to region - especially if you are in the city, since it is easy to jump into a shop to avoid drawing cards.
  • In terms of understanding the rules , he actually isn't as fiddly as we first thought he'd be.

The basic rules you'll need to know are:

1. Remember to place him on your space when you draw an event (nothing else happens at that point)

2. Remember to draw from the harbinger deck when you are in the same region as him, when instructed to draw a card from a space

3. Remember to encounter him if you land on his space

4. Remember to remove him from the board when you reveal an omen

The omens and everything else wicked that comes with the deck are worked out as you draw cards. So just follow instructions as needed.

We tend to find the hamburger turns up and the board becomes to hard to traverse . The rules we have been playing spot on . But we have no corner expansions yet .

Well, I think you are just in for a bit of a challenge when you play with the basic game. Other than home-brewing some rules to tone the hamburger down, it'd be a tough play-through with just the standard board as there are really only 2 regions and it is not an easy feat to jump back and forth between them; especially early game. If you are getting frustrated with stalemate games and do not like home brewing rules, then I might suggest you hold off on using the Harbinger Expansion until you've purchased another corner or two to make your life a bit easier.

You have been an amazing help . We plan on getting the dungeon and city next . This will make games way more interesting . Thank you .

Great advice by chemical22.

Although The Harbinger expansion is designed for any combination of expansions, it works wonderfully when you have all four corners. It forces you into Regions you normally wouldn't explore.

Landing on the Harbinger and sending him to another Region is the main way that players who are using only the base game can get him to leave the Outer Region.

You gave a lot of good advice chemical22, I only wanted to remark that "jumping into a shop to avoid drawing cards" is not as easy as it seems. According to the rules, you can't enter a shop and do nothing (see City Rulebook page 8, Encounters in Shops).

For the above reason, I think the City is the worst Region for avoiding the Harbinger, because you have to walk the whole Street circle to get out, you can't enter the Shops freely, and all Street spaces force you to draw cards, because they hardly get full (it's draw 1 card unless there are 3 on the space). Moreover, the City deck has few Enemies and this means that the other card types (including Events) are in higher proportion if compared to other Regions.

Good points. I suppose we've all just been a bit lucky to have coin to spend, so it seemed like a good tactic.
