Tactics Verus: B-Wings

By Tirnaog, in X-Wing

I've had my Bs gutted by well flown Interceptors. With post movement boosts and barrel rolls my opponent got in close, focus fired on one at a time and killed me. I swear this guy could read my mind. While I didn't do too bad anticipating his moves there was little I could do to overcome his post maneuver moves.

I quite enjoy running the good ol Jonnus brothers list

Two Tie Defenders with an HLC each and capt Jonnus giving 2 re-rolls per secondary attack

If he focuses Jonnus that fine as now you can abuse your white K-turns

This

I ran 2 Deltas with HLC and Jonnus with Determination and HU. Only list that gave me problems was an all A-wing build. Those little suckers were hard to hit and often stayed out of arch. I destroyed Brobots, Thuglife, Fat Han, and the like.

I thought about Delta Squadron + Adv. Homing Missile x3

But this sounds even better ^^

Those missiles only fire once, while the HLC keeps bringing the pain.

There also is no clear first target here. Shoot at Jonus first, and the HLCs eat you alive while you attempt to eat through 7 points of hull (with Determination!) Shoot at the Delta's first, and Jonus keeps giving them rerolls.

Cannons are better but if he lands those three advanced homing missiles on the same b he kills it very early in the game.

Not so great against bbbbz but if keyan is on the board you can wipe out a third of the other guys list.

Also against a points fortress being able to reduce agility or attack early on with a lucky crit could be a game changer.

I have on many occasions fired two HLCs at a B-wing and removed it from the board. 1 green vs. 4 red with rerolls (and focus usually) equals a bad day for B-wings.

B-wings have a lot of health, A-wings have a lot of agility and X-wings play the middle ground. A-wings are good against lots of small attacks, and B-wings are better at fighting huge attacks that punch through agility dice.

You can broadly sort the types of defence in this game into three layers. OPR, OPA and OPG.

  • OPA (Once Per Attack): The most common OPA defence is the Agility Die. OPA defences tend to be the weakest against any particular attack but they work against every one. Against spam attacks like TIE swarms or Twin Laser Turrets, OPA is the most effective. OPA is usually pretty unreliable. Examples of OPA include Autothrusters, Sensor Jammer, Stealth Device while it works, Cloak and R2-F2.

  • OPR (Once Per Round): The most common OPR defences are Focus and Evade tokens. OPRs are the strongest against individual attacks but they usually come at an action cost. They usually act as a defensive coating over the ship's health that comes back every round, either by a once off enhancement to OPA or by acting just like a shield when it comes to Evade tokens. While more reliable than OPA, OPR can still be lost if you're blocked or stressed. OPR tends to be stronger than OPA, but it usually costs you your action. It's as good as OPG against a single attack but doesn't do as well under focused fire. Examples of OPG include Ysanne Isard, C-3PO, shield regen astromechs and of course focus and evade tokens.

  • OPG (Once Per Game) is the last line of defence. OPG is characterised by the Shield token. Once it's gone, it's gone, but it's always there for you: you won't lose it to blocks or stress like OPR, it won't randomly fail you like OPA and you get tons of it for the same cost (compare ships of the similar cost but different agility and look how much more health they get). Shields, Hull, Chewbacca Crew, Moff Jerjerrod. and Integrated Astromech.

  • And then finally there's the best form of defence, which is not being shot at all.

You fight high OPA defence by hitting hard: it'll take a chunk out of every attack you make so you go for big attacks to punch through those dice. You fight low OPA defence with a thousand cuts. That's not an inherent trait but part of the game's balancing: two 2 die attacks are usually cheaper than a 4 die attack, all things considered.

You fight high OPR defence with focus fire: it usually shaves off more damage from your attacks refreshes each round so you need to cram Most OPA is action based so you can also fight it with stress and blocking. Low OPR defence doesn't make much of a tactical difference: you still usually want to focus fire to remove threats from the board, but it becomes less important than if you had a Fat Han to punch through. OPR defence is by far and large the one you fight the most with tactics rather than with builds.

You fight high OPG defence with maximum dice in whatever form that takes. High OPG is usually paired with low OPA, so lots of attacks over bigger attacks for the reasons above is usually the most effective way. A way to fight low OPG is with direct damage: if a ship is relying on OPA and OPR it's going to hate bombs, Prox Mines and Advanced Homing Missiles.

The B-wing has very weak OPA and OPR and really good OPG. That is to say, weak defences but a ****ton of health. There's a lot of B-wing to burn through, but you burn through it fast. As a result, they don't like TIE swarms and they don't like Cluster Missiles.
