Have you named your ships?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

Aside from when they have title cards attached to them in a build, have you given your ships names?

Lyraeus has named his painted ships, and told people those names (Blue Majesty, and Scars of Freedom).

I know Vykes has done some amazing work fleshing out his fleet's backstory, including names (thread here: Forces of the Ceknell Subsector).

In my older HNN reports (see here), when I wrote more detailed reports at the 180 point level, I called one Gladiator the Veermok, another Blixus, and a third Horranth, after predatory creatures of the SW galaxy.

I had also begun to start making custom title cards for them, but gave up when the imagery I had wouldn't have good enough resolution for good printing (>=300dpi). (Also, life happened.)

I also want to call my new ISD the Overlord.

But I'm curious if other people have done so. Have you named all of them, or just the painted ones?

I'm naming my VSD pair as Scharnhorst and Gneisenau while ISD would potentially be among of these - Valkyrie, Tristan, Isolde or Lohengrin

While that MC Torpedo Frigate as Kitakami and Ooi

For RSD, I'm leaning towards Akizuki class or Shiratsuyu class and coloured according to KanColle colours

VSDs Fairlight and Penitence, the former being named as far back as before the game even shipped. Not sure which one is which, but typically the name is assigned to whichever Victory is in play.

The only other names "assigned" to ships are ones I intend on getting in the future. Akron, Macon, and Shenandoah are all destined for MC series craft, though I might assign one of those names to an Assault Frigate.

Yes.

My VSD flagship is the Castigator. My other VSD is the Warlord (cuz it has that upgrade card). Then there is the Ravager (my 2nd Glad that pretty much dies every game) and of course the Demolisher.

Lemme get some pics too.... ><

LETS SEE SOME MORE PAINTED SHIP SHIPS please.

My Assault Frigate is the Lollipop.

...shes a good ship.

I finished naming the fleet of Jasbu Thake (yahs-boo, Thake rhymes with lake, this is my Star Wars Admiral name)

The Flagship:

Imperial-class Star Destroyer Thake's Fist

Victory-class Star Destroyers Assailant,

Xiphos (after the Greek short sword)

and Bastila(because Reven didn't fit)

Gladiator-class Star Destroyers Angriff (germen for Anger)

and Zertore (modified from German word for Destroy)

And on order the Raider-class Corvettes

Degen (pronuced Day-gan rhymes with Reagan derived from german for Dagger)

Kadachi (Japanese Short Sword)

Now I must paint their names on in a cool fashion...

My space whale is "Pride of Ithor" I am still yet to put the name physically on the ship but I have a few ideas.

I really really lack creativity, so no. No names. I also had a hard time naming my fleet on the sheet all Sullust weekend. Probably why I came in 3rd twice this weekend. :D

Stasy, 'Tis da curse I tells ya! Da curses be eatin' yer luck away! Ya gots ta give 'em names! Da whole lot of 'em!

I just find I remember those worthwhile moments a little better when I name my ships. Miniature wargaming is just sort of like that to me, names create that intrinsic link to memories. There's a lot more to it, but I won't blather much with psych babble..

Ah the stories of the Yella' Bellies, me' most infamous wargaming regiment. Couldn't pass a moral based check on any field, in any system. Me mate, a game-breaker by nature, once said he'd prove to me he could use anything and win. He promptly rolled a one in four hundred chance test... twice, and declared them irrevocably cursed. They really had somethin' mystic about em.

Must admit, I'm always quite interested in what names people give to their ships. Lots of good ones so far, from the middle English classics to the colourful, the majestic to the malevolent, and everything in between. And this is why I love it :)

I'm honoured, lord Hasselstein. I too have looked at the name plaques, but I've yet to find something that looks good for a template base. But, I shan't give up. Print them out, tidy up any awkward pixelated black print lines with an artists pen or a paint brush, double side-tape them to some backing, I bet it'll work pretty well. I've done something similar for flags in the past but I won't lie, it feels more like printing out a paint-by-numbers project that just happens to have a bit of colour, rather than a finished project project. It can be unthinkably time consuming.

I have a Pink VIctory, named Pinky.

Painted the names on my Imperials so far, but not the Rebels... Mostly due to lack of inspiration.

So my Victories are the Adamant and the Tempest. Gladiator is the Harbinger.

Got nothing at Sullust, so I don't see me having an ISD for a good while yet.

Moby - Garm's AFmk2-A, Paragon

Yarvis - Yavaris

the Spindly Bastard - naked escort neb

the bastard always gets sent in first :P

Flagship....Lucky Jack

Escort.....the Greasy Bastard (cousin to fickles' ^^^)

(both Assault frigates)

both have small skull & cross bones decals on their flanks :)

Nice! Dirigibles FTW. Never noticed the shape correlation before. ;)

I've named mine for the Vassal tourney.

Nebulons: Surprise (flag), Acasta, Pallas, Ambuscade, [+Salvation]

AF: Leopard

Although I don't think it makes much sense in the Star Wars universe, all of my rebel ships are nordic themed:

MC80: Ragnarok

Assault Frigate II: Mjolnir

MC30c: Valkyrie

Neb-B: Lady Sif

Neb-B: Loki's Ire

CR90: Huginn

CR90: Muninn

I've painted a few of them so far (the ones that I have until wave 2 comes out) and I've painted the names on one of their sides.

Not to be a hater or anything but it's helpful for us opponents of yours if in-game you just refer to the ships as their generic title. Played someone at Sullust who had gimmicky names that were all kind of similar (joke names), it was difficult to keep track of which one he was activating. Not a big problem, just an observation.

Names are purely for shiggles

I'm sure confusion is impossible during games if you just point out who you're talking about

I do tend to call the bastard Not-Varis to avoid confusion, however

My green painted AFII is the Darklighter (even when it is the Paragon).

My new unpainted AFII is the Porkins.

Not sure what the MC80 is going to be yet. I'll figure it out soon enough.

Names do work better in an environment where the players are regular opponents of one another, and the ships are distinctly painted.

I have a Nebulon-B named Audacity. Another named Fearless. A third named Impudenence. A fourth named Courageous. The fifth is named Daring. And the last is named Far Orbit (after the hero ship of the old D6 WEG Star Wars RPG Campaign module.)

Because it takes those qualities to use them in fleet combat! :)

Yeah, mine are Painted differently... Well, painted the Same, but the name is actually *on* the model. So that counts. At least as much as putting a "1" tag and a "2" tag on the Base, which is actually sometimes hard to see with the SIZE of the Victory model.

I have 2 ships Named after my late Cat(Nebulon B Frigate and a CR-90) it's something to remember her by.

Michael

I painted a Victory in Old Republic/Episode III colors, and dubbed it the Senate's Sword. I'll be painting another in similar colors, but will have to think of a new Old Republic-y name.
