The Fleet is Ready, Admirals...

By Viratin, in Star Wars: Armada

With Sullest done, I've gotten the two ships I needed in order to make my fleet really look like a proper armada! So, here they are, the Star Destroyers! (and a tiny little raider)

Just got finished doing the lines tonight. Freehanding those was a pain, but it was the only way I could see to do it right with all the little bumps and crevices that would have made taping the lines even harder. Painted them by doing two washes of Drakenhof Nightshade (a dark blue wash, for those not familiar with Citadel paints), and then dry brushing a medium-grey lightly over top. The picture darkens them up a bit; they're actually slightly lighter with a slight blue tint.

Added some close-ups for the Vic and Imperial. I'm going to go back and touch up a few places on the Imperial. Perhaps add some window lighting and such, lighten up the shield projectors on the bridge. It needs a little more dry brushing as well, I think.

O wow, took me FOREVER to figure out that those white lines were Paint and not sunlight filtering through blinds lol

And here I thought this guy was just bragging about haveing more ships not painting them :D

Nice to know they're straight enough to be confused for lights coming through blinds xD

They certainly look very good, but you say that they're much darker in the image than in natural light? Off the cuff, I'd say that's too bad, because in the image they look amazing.

I also have that wash, but I'm not sure I'm courageous enough to apply it for fear of it being too lighter-blue as you say that it is.

And then suddenly I noticed the stripes and *head explodes*

It's not "that" light, haha. It's just not quite as dark as they look here. Here they look almost black. In natural light, they're more like a dark grey-cobalt color. Do two washes of the Drakenhof, and if you think it's too light, just hit it with a third, and you'll still have that slight blue tinge, but keep it dark.

Minimalistic and awesome.

Thank you! I did want something fairly simple (albeit mostly so it'd be easy to duplicate on future ships!)

I envy all of you that got a chance to play in Sullust and win an ISD... The rest of us have to wait atleast six more weeks .... : /

It was hard fought! The Swiss Pairings style is not my favorite way of doing tournaments. It basically gives you a random first shot, and then if you sweep your opponent, you get placed at the top bracket, and then have to fight all the best players in future rounds. Which, of course, means that while the two best players may end up in the second round, the third best could be placed against a lesser opponent in the second round, and sweep them, boosting himself to second place, while one of the two best players at the main table will lose, lowering them to third.

Sweet! Really nicely done.

Thank you ^_^ I thought the asymmetrical paint lines would be a bit of a stand-out, since most Star Destroyers tend to use a symmetrical design, usually with just a central stripe or one stripe on either side.

austere, proper, intimidating..........the Empire oh and very nice!! :)

Can i ask, you didn't prime these or strip them first. this was just the base model paint ?

Needs more raiders.

Not that you can get your hands on them easily, but I'm too envious of your painting skills to let that minor, difficult to correct flaw go unmentioned. :P

Impressive....most impressive.

Indeed you are powerful....

Nope, didn't prime or strip the original paint. Since my plan was just to use washes, I actually wanted to have the original paint underneath. The wash just tints the color that's underneath, so the variance in the original paint (the lighter and darker segments of the ship's hull), still add some variance to the final product, though it's harder to see.

Right?! I want at least two more Raiders. Then I think my fleet will be sitting with all the options I need. Ship-wise, anyway. Squadrons are going to be done next, but I'm just going to sharpie-paint those little suckers. Too many of them to do 'em right.

I really like the look of this paint job, not going to lie I want to shamelessly 'borrow' the style ;)

If you don't mind me asking, what colour paint did you use for the dry brush?

Where's the Raider's stripe? It seems so lonely.

Impressive, most impressive.

It just gave me an idea to paint a fleet in white with blue stripes like a Ford Shelby Cobra.
