Played my first game today...

By Kodiak3d, in X-Wing

So I bought these ships so my friends and I could try the game out:
- Starter set

- X-wing

- Millennium Falcon

- Y-wing

- Z-95

- TIE fighter

- TIE interceptor

- TIE phantom

Played one very quick game (as laid out in the quick-start rules), then a quick game with the full rules, then a 100 point build.

I'm hooked.

The 100 point build ended up with Dutch Vander, Luke, and Wedge against Soontir Fel, Howlrunner, and 2 Academy Pilots. I had the Imps, and I put a shield and hull upgrade on all my ships (we allowed proxies). We definitely had fun, and the Imps prevailed!

I've spent the week reading the forums and other articles here and there so I could learn a bit about the game, and that really helped. I tried to pass that knowledge along to my friends. I'm not the kind of guy who just wants to play and destroy his friends (then you don't have anyone left who wants to play).

I've got to say, Soontir Fel is definitely a beast (I used PTL, of course). We all enjoyed the game and look forward to getting to play more.

...and I look forward to getting more of these beautiful models. I collect Star Wars stuff as well, and these are simply wonderful. Can't wait to try my hand at painting a few.

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed your first foray into X-wing and welcome to the community.

I notice you do not have the Defender.

You know you want it. Search your elite talent list, you know it to be true.

Trust me, I DO want it. Probably order it (and more) this weekend after I get paid again ;-)

Funny thing is that rebel list might be pretty good now with the new core set and expansion upgrades.

It did well up until Luke made a bad move and I made a good guess and got Fel right behind him (while in Range 1 of Howlrunner). Hello 5 dice to your back side! He'd already taken some damage and couldn't repel firepower of that magnitude.

Congratulations!

You've taken your first step into a larger world.

Welcome to the game!

Just one rules clarification: Hull Upgrade and Shield Upgrade are both Modifications. A ship can only have one modification at a time, so you can't actually equip both of those upgrades to the same ship.

Oh yeah! I knew that already, I just didn't catch myself when I did it. Neither did anyone else. Just got over-enthusiastic, I guess. Drat, I feel kinda bad now, but not too bad. It really didn't come into play. I hardly even got scratched.

I just have to ask, if you're such a Sar Wars nerd, what took you so long?!!!!!

Welcome. Your soul is lost now. :D

I didn't need another thing to spend money on!

Welcome aboard! Fun times lie ahead (and an eventual addiction to the new plastic crack).

Gentlemen a moment of silence for our new converts bank balance.

Welcome to x-wing and the imperial navy the greatest force for good in the galaxy.

Further clarification: Fel would have been firing 4 dice. 3 + 1 for Range One. Howlrunner then allows a re-roll, rather than an additional die.

Also, WELCOME! It's a great game and you'll have a lot of fun.

Wow, we REALLY weren't paying attention.

Don't worry about it. Mistakes are always made the first few times. . . it's a lot to remember. I had initiative screwed up for about 6 months when I started.

No one gets everything right at first, a common one is spending a focus token and only changing one result instead of all focus results, or using target lock to only roll one dice when you can roll as many or few as you want.

If there's something you don't get don't be afraid to ask in the rules forums.

Welcome to the game. Hope you have fun.

If Imperial, I hope you don't ignore the standard Tie Fighter since it's not an Interceptor. Those guys can do quite a bit if you learn to fly them. Sure, they don't have boost and only 2 attack dice, but they can do a lot more than people realize. If you learn to fly a Tie Fighter well, you can fly almost anything the Imperials have better.

Don't worry. I love regular TIEs. My friend, however, made the mistake of underestimating them.

One of my favorite lists to play is called "Space Cowboys" since the Lambda Shuttle was named, "the Great Space Cow" for it's turning issues.

SPACE COWBOYS:

Omnicron Shuttle w/ Fleet Officer, Adv. Sensors, and Anti-Pursuit Lasers

Dark Curse

Backstabber

Night Beast

2 x Academy Pilots

The idea is to dish out the 2 Focus to whatever ships you think is going to get shot that turn, and then do a Green maneuver to clear that stress. I've found that Tie Fighters with an Evade and Focus...or double Focus...tend to be a lot more resilient than expected. I've beaten a few tournament level lists with this and find it quite fun.

You bought all that to try the game? Your wallet is ******.

Agreed! Say hello to fun, and goodbye to your money and free time.
