An Ode to Sensor Jammer

By Sabre 7, in X-Wing

So why wasn't it popular in the past?

- Sensor Jammer is a good card, but unfortunately it takes up a system slot.

- Not many ships have a system slot.

- Those that do usually get more value out of advanced sensors or fire control system.

- Now if a ship could equip 2 system upgrades i think we would see alot more sensor jammers. Right now for most situations it's the 2nd choice behind Adv Sensors or FCS, so it doesnt see much play (much like many EPT which are overshadowed by Predator or PTL).

Sensor jammer is a fairly limited defensive upgrade for 4 points on ships that generally have some other way to help their defense. Most of your swarm ships focus anyway, which makes it more useful against the kind of actionless(predator, gunner) type builds you tend to see than against the normal ships. That being said, it's still not bad, but it's also the most expensive system upgrade, and there are a lot of powerful effects in the system slot. I've actually seen sensor jammers in play and they really do some work, though. It's interesting that the TLT is something that brings them to the fore now.

You can also throw into the list: "Attacking ship ran over a Conner Net" :P

jammies are great, but you have to be careful with redundancy

for example, Xizor doesn't need it at all. Predator + jammer Xizor can be a thing, but V.I Xizor needs FCS to have the punch to make his points back. Between his ability, which only doesn't work on TLTs, and 3 agility + autothrusters (not to mention a hit squad of generics and the ability to not fly into the thick of every tlt on the table), which do work on tlts, jammers are redundant.

40 points for Predator + jammer Guri could well solo any squad of generics, though

well, in practice it only costs one point but...

Bold claim! I'll wager five thousand quatloos that the newcomers are destroyed.

Ah, Sensor Jammer. I recently used it to stop someone from leaving X-wing for good.

A buddy of mine was having a devil of a time with TLTs. Poor bastard couldn't adapt and blamed everything but his lists. Ego, you know. Was on the verge of selling his ships and quitting. He used to play Brobots and have a good time, so I suggested starting with this:

IG-88(X): Predator + Sensor Jammer + Autothrusters + Whatever. Passive dice modification all day.

He took my advice for once and stopped losing so much. I had mixed feelings about it. It's good to see someone have a comeback, but I could have bought his collection for cheap.

So he couildnt beat TLTs with brobots without sensor jammer? Sounds like your buddy is having other issues with the game...

Hadn't tried Brobots against TLTs, but he was on a long losing streak , TLTs or no. Sensor Jammer helped him figure it out and get back on the horse.

We're taking things one game at a time. Funny thing is, he first taught me to play.

Bro Bots with Sensor Jammers is ugly.

Also, Sensor Jammers is very effective against Ordnance. Yeah, there are areas where that isn't a thing, but people use it in my store. Also, I think ordnance will become more of a thing.

I have been have a ton of success with SJ for a while now. I ran a list with Kath and Whisper where Kath would stress the main threat many times over then whisper would have 1 less attack dice coming at her for a while.

Worked out really well, except for the hard counter of PS 10 RAC, which just happened to be crazy popular in the last meta. I still managed a 3rd place finish in the BC (Canada) Regional's.

In this meta, I'm loving the SJ on the bro bots, but the changes to scoring is essentially making bro-bots a 4 ship list. I'm finding it's harder to win those games that go to time, and putting SJ on bro bots reduces their fire power enough that more games are going to time.

I like! I'm not sure whether I'd prefer that or

Prince Xizor - Veteran Instincts, Autothrusters

Guri - Lone Wolf, Virago, Sensor Jammer, Autothrusters

Black Sun Soldier x 2

Potential in this list to split an opponent's forces and/or force difficult decisions - target Xizor and his escort first, or try to focus down the free-flying Guri.

99 points - you could always drop the Soldiers to Bananas and give Xizor Push or Predator instead of VI as well...

I have run this list (with VI swapped for predator on Xizor) on several occasions, with great success. In my experience, players tend to ignore the starvipers during the opening turns due to their defenses, which plays to the strengths of this list.

Ode to Sensor Jammer

Tokenless Focus after Focus modified with systematic impunity

Your offense dice yield their hits to my phantom's inexorability,

My Sensor Jammer protects without emerald failure;

In the august presence of Jax, honorable thrusters

Flit about, unthreatened by Twin Laser pagentry

And the promise of death by the dual ship metacy;

Driven on by the fierce scrutiny of my lord, emperor palpatine;

Of fiery death they protect and propel those loyal we,

And at last they sough the rumour of immortality.

P.S. I found your lack of Ode's disturbing, and have since altered the thread, pray I do not alter it any further.

I tried sj instead of as yesterday with brobots. Awesome in two games. Completely useless in the other game.

You know what, I would really like to see a (small base) ship being able to hold two system upgrades! We have dual EPTs and dual Mods, and neither broke their respective ship nor created an unholy upgrade combo, so I think its doable...

E-wing with a discount?

Plus of course it's a pretty rare card - it's only currently available from one source, and Imperial Shuttles aren't exactly required in vast quantities.

Here in Texas, you do see the occasional herd of 'em, though.
