Ispher (Visions of Dawn) always stand?

By edcy, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

"You cannot be Poisoned. At the start of your turn, recover 2 heart"

If Ispher is KO'ed, can he stand by this ability and get full turn ?

No. Like all abilities, a hero cannot use them while knocked out unless they are explicitly used while knocked out. (Orkell's heroic feat, for example)

WOW....$1,024.35.....I've spent that much on this game!?!?!?!? Not to mention tax, and shipping and card sleeves and the obsolete 1st edition stuff (including the the 2nd edition conversion kit), and all the other stuff a person buys to store and organize the many parts and pieces of this game. WOW!?!?!?! THAT MUCH!?!?!?!?!

Now before someone goes getting the wrong impression.....Let me say......I either really enjoy this game ...... and the many hours of fun I have with friends playing it... or .....I'm nuts for spending this kind of money on a game!!!! "WHAT is your major malfunction!?!?!?"....I'm not certain....SIR!!! YES SIR....SIR!!!

Also.....let me say...I understand to error is human....we all make mistakes....I'm not writing this to "point fingers". Ultimately I understand this is JUST a game.... a WAY COOL GAME....BUT...just a game. Look....I'm obviously pleased with the games that FF produces....why else would I sink (oops..."invest") so much money into them!?!?!?. FF Games...IMO...are good products that are well worth the money. So...and not that its going to matter in the big picture of life ....don't get the wrong idea....I'm not sinking (oops...investing) the time to write this to "complain". I'm writing this in an attempt to encourage FF to continue with producing such cool games AND to encourage FF (and anyone reading this) to always strive to do our best in all we toil at under the sun. To work is good, to work to the best of our ability is honorable...to say the least.

ALL THAT said....

I also like the bit I've seen on the cool new APP for this game....looking forward to more of that!

That APP - and high tech APP stuff in general - and way cool gaming stuff like this game - has had me wondering for a few years now.....will Fantasy Flight be the first company to take board games and APP tech to the "next level"?

Let me explain.

I was playing this game again last night - started at 7 pm Friday night and ended at 5 am Saturday morning - yes....10 hours straight in the wee hours of the night after working construction all day....oh....and i'm almost 50....no spring chicken....no old dog yet either....but....anyway....i digress.

I was playing this game again last night and I ran across this question.....you know the one....can Ispher use his ability that says "at the start of your turn, recover 2 (heart)".

I got KO'ed....I was out.

I read....in English....the "Activation Card" and it said...

HERO TURN SUMMARY

1. Start of Turn:

I. Start of turn abilities

II. Refresh cards

I looked at the Hero Card....and it said....

HERO ABILITY

You cannot be Poisoned.

At the start of your turn, recover 2 (heart).

I used the public education I received some 35 years ago...you know the one that still used "old math"....and I thought about this.....and i said to my self....and those at the table with me....

hmm........."At the start of your turn"....listed UNDER..."Hero Ability"....and I compared that to the "Activation Card"....that said....step 1 "Start of Turn Abilities".....

HMMMMM.....Hero Ability....At Start of your turn.....reads like it makes good American (oops...English)....again....just a construction worker with a public education so I could be reading it wrong.

so I looked at the errata thinking - this has to be in the FAQ!?!?!?!?! if it is....I didn't find it. sad face.

so i looked int he rule book....page 7....Section Titled - HERO TURN SUMMARY....it said....

During each hero turn, the active hero player performs the following steps in order .

1. Start of Turn: During this step, any effect effecting the active hero that last "until the start of you next turn" end. Also , the hero player may use any abilities that trigger "at the start of your turn". Then the hero player refreshes his exhausted cards (see "Exhausted and Refreshing Cards" on page 8).

AGAIN...I thought....reads like good American.

then I thought....well, maybe I don't know how to read American. shocked face!?!?!?!

we debated about it, looked through pages of SHtuff, went on line using our cool high tech hand held things, and lap tops, and other such high tech shtuff, and we found pages of "unofficial" - kind of official ....you know the shtuff that is answered by designers of the game (supposedly) but just not on the games "official" forums or home product pages....and we also found some obscure note in the rule book on page 15 under Knocked out that said.....

"A hero can not use skills or abilities while knocked out, unless an effect specifically allows it."

we looked on line some more....we debated...we wined and cried and pushed and shoved and drank some more coffee....and we finally tossed our hands i the air and me....the person getting the short end of the stick...decided it wasn't worth the debate...and I said...ok...your right...lets move on.

now>>>>>all this sad....i NEED TO SAY....I am not writing all this so we can revisit and to debate this question about Ispher and his Hero Ability - AT THE START OF HIS TURN.. WHAT!?!?!? WHAT THE HECK IS THIS DUDE WRITING ALL THIS SHTUFF FOR THAN!?!?!?!? AND WHY ARE YOU NOW READING IT!?!?!?!?

NOW....don't get me wrong...that was all "fun" too...in its own way... last night eh debte, the page flipping the web searching....the looking for the answer...BUT...at the same time....I thought.... DANG...now there is a good use for an APP!!!!

What if....and imagine this if you will....we go into the future with me....open your mind Quaid ....open your mind Quaid ....open your mind.....

What if all players that sunk....ooops "invested"......even just $79.95 into the base game....not to mention those of us that have "invested" $1,000 +/- into this and other similar FF games....opened their new game boxes and instead of finding the more printed "rule Books"....or in the case of the Lieutenant Packs - ANOTHER printed page explaining the rules for these expansions....they found printed on the box....a reference that led them to the game producers web site that told them they could down load the APP called - Descent: Journeys in the Dark (2nd edition) COMPLETE rule book.

Imagine instead of finding the PDF of all the "printed rule books" they found one link to one APP to rule them (the rule books) ALL!?!?!?!

What if...you could down load an APP...specific to your game.....that did this!!!!

1. It was the COMPLETE collection of ALL the current rules for your specific game.

for example . ....what if...printed on the back of the box that comes with the game you just sunk $79.95 into.....it said...."for the complete set of rules to your new way cool game....go to FFG/Descent and download the COMPLETE rules for your game." .....ALL FF games could do this - so instead of getting a printed rule book in your new game box, players went on line and downloaded the APP for that games "Rule Book".

Think of all the money - and trees - FFG could save by using modern tech APPS to reduce paper products for game "paperwork" that could be better managed in an electronic format.

2. The Rule Book for your Game ---- APP....was updated instead of "adjusted" with an Errata and FAQ PDF.

for example: right now game players - as they have been doing since the dark ages of board gaming - can now go online and down load a PDF of ALL the rule books.....books they already own if they purchased the game. AND...rule books that are also - probabaly - already outdated by the time they get thier game home from the store. Books that need an "Errata and FAQ".... PDF to correct.

Again - i understand mistakes happen....BUT... BUT....what if instead of of those PDFs.....you would find one link for an APP that would have ALL the rules in one electronic format - that you could print if you really wanted to...BUT that you would not print because of all the cool, easy to use and very useful stuff the APP managed for you. FFG could even charge - say.....$10 for this APP....and I'm sure players that have invested $79.95 into the game would be willing to purchase.... IF it meant they had ALL the updated rules in the palm of their hand instead of in stacks of outdated pages of rule books and errata pages and or online content taht was at best "opinions" of other players and at worse - "unofficial" - kind of official - answers to posts on forums like this.

But....BUT....what about people that don't have the tech to download this APP?!?!?!? how will they get the rules!?!?! really?!?!?!? what part of the planet is FFG selling this game on...to people in wood shacks in the middle of the jungle!?!?!? NO....they are selling to people that have phones in the palm of their hand that do more than most lap tops do and that cost less than the base game of $79.95. so....not a valid question. You will need to think of another reason to stay in the dark ages...of the day when printed rule books were the cool thing and high tech tech stuff of today was only in movies like Total Recall.

3. The rule Book - as new expansions got released - automatically update....and....promoted upcoming game products.

for example: in a lot of FFG products I've purchased, I've gotten these cool multi page high quality booklets that advertised other FFG games. what if - again saving money and trees wasted on printed items that are quickly outdated and tossed aside - what if - WHEN the game app was "automatically updated" - your captive audience also had to sit and watch a little sales pitch on your other products that are normally solicited to them with the printed booklets in their new games?

two stones with one bird is what I always say!

you can update rule books in real time - and solicit your other games while not investing money into printed paraphernalia.

but wait...that's not all....on top of those three key things -the APP would do this....

- update all Errata and FAQ in the correct "section" and with "example text" and that had links that cross referenced other pertinent info from other sections of the book.

- offered a section that people could "click on" that would enable them to "receive" updated game product. for example - in this game, there are some cards that need to be "rewritten" because the FAQ or Errata says it should "read like this" instead of "xyz". so people could click on the "print updated card" button and it would send FFG a notice that someone needs this card updated. The APP would require people to input information for it to be mailed to - FFG could then restrict one updated card per address - and when say - 500 people said they needed the updated card - FFG could run a series and have them mailed out.

- The APP - like that cool new camping APP does - could ask players to input their products they own - and proof of purchase info - and the rule book they have would only show them the rules for the products they own. and people could only get updated cards for products they have proof of purchase info for.

the APP could do a lot more - save a LOT on printing costs for rule books, errata info, etc. and could do as good of a job of promoting FFG games as the FFG website does. the possibilities are endless...IMO.

and....you guessed it....if you want someone to head this project up, someone that has a life long dream of working for a game company, a life long passion of games, a love for games, and a like for modern tech....i would love to tackle managing this project for you for all your games! I'm not an APP programmer or anything like that - I've constructed multi million dollar buildings for 30 years - I know how to manage projects with far more complexity than this project would entail - and you cant beat my love for games!

anyway - thanks for reading this - peace.

THAT was an awesome read. The only thing I don't think is ever going to happen is that they stop printing rule books.... there are always people who don't want to use apps and so on.

But I totally aggree with you, an app with all rules and all card updates would really be cool. Even better if it was managed and organized for every new expansion, H&M and Lieutenant pack. (And obviously, if some rule changes get decided.)

Thank you Kaisho, I got the gist of it. :P

My man clwillcox, all of us forum lurkers here have been dying for FFG to just get those FAQ/Errata updates out more often.

I love your idea to have the Rulebooks, Faq & Errata all melded into an app that could constantly be updated and searchable. Maybe you should copy your post and make it into it's own thread. FFG does read our posts from time to time, maybe you'll "inspire" them.
