Rules Change: MOV for half

By Luethar, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey all,

Just wanted to get your opinion on the new MOV changes in the tournament rules. According to the new version of the tournament rules, opponents will be awarded half the point total if they damage a large based ship to half their overall health.

How many people think this is an unfair rule that directly nerfs Scum and Villiany? I. for one, do. I can see it for the Decimator, the Houndstooth, and the Falcon. These ships all have 12 or better health. But what about the IG-88? That is only 8 overall health.Rebels and Imperials have small based ships that have more health than that (i.e. K-Wing and TIE Punisher, respectively). Perhaps the rule should be re-looked and instead of using the size of a ship's base, instead look at its overall health to balance the mechanic. By affecting the Firespray, the Houndstooth, and the Agressor, you have taken out 3 ships from the S&V fleet. Respectively you have only taken out two from the Rebels (YT-1300 and YT-2400) and from the Imperials (Lambda Shuttle and Decimator). Oh and in the next wave, S&V gets another large based ship that gets affected by this rule too!

The requested solution: Base it on overall health rather than base size.... I think a fair number would be 10 overall health. In this way then all factions are targeted equally.

Ideas to share on this?

Lue.

Aggressors 8 hit points are behind arcdodging autothrustered agility 3 though. It's not just pure health to think about.

The big ships that this affects the worst are Shuttles and Firesprays But overall it's a necessary change.

Give the Struggling big ships a nudge rather than discard a needed change IMO.

The Aggressor's one of the worst culprits for point forting. Furthermore, its high agility value makes its health points much harder to remove than those of a Decimator or a Falcon.

Besides, this only really comes into play if the game lasts over 75 minutes.

The solution?

"Wipe them out. All of them."

Firesprays and Lambdas don't tend to point fort. The idea there is to go for the kill.

Oh I totally agree but they manage to not die (unlikely) they are sure to be beat up and give away the points. I think they are the big ships that the ruling 'unfairly' affects. I indent that as they saw less competitive play already and this rule will just make them even less present if anything.

Falcons and aggressors especially, absolutely needed reigning in but the Deci also (coming from a Deci player no less).

The solution to any outlying cases (in response to the OP original intent) like the shuttle and Firesprays, isn't to scrap the new rule, but to give those ships judged to need it a little nudge.

Which doesn't matter if you win outright except for MoV, and MoV-wise you'll be like the rest of the lists in the game. Half MoV doesn't weaken a ship's combat power at all, it just makes it behave like two ships in terms of MoV.

It doesn't really disadvantage anything, it just removes advantages, and then only noticably from the point forts. A 60 point Firespray also needs the point fort rules, and at low points it doesn't make enough of a difference to be worth worrying about. Nobody worries about the MoV of a pair of TIE fighters relative to a TIE interceptor.

No ship has been taken out of any fleet.

As others have pointed out, durability in X-wing has two components: one is hull plus shields, and one is Agility. Basing the decision on hull and shields but ignoring Agility is essentially special pleading for the Aggressor.

Another thing to point out is that with a big base, the inherent boost on an Agressor moves it as far as the fastest small based ships would, so you can't outrun them.

Example:

A-Wing moves 5 straight (200mm) + ship base (40mm) + Boost (40mm) + Ship Base (40 mm) = 320mm

Agressor moves 3 Straight (120mm) + Ship Base (80mm) + Boost (40mm) + Ship Base (80 mm) = 320mm

With 9 Green Maneuvers on the dial, this is more than any other ship, including the A-wing or Tie Interceptor.

S-Loop and K-turn also make this ship hard to pin down.

Well one thing you pinned down that I did not take into account with this rule is that the 1/2 MOV only gets awarded if time expires. I did not read that and if it is the case then it is not as bad as I had originally thought.

Lue.

Actually, I read the rules... it doesn't say specifically if time expires. I think you get the 1/2 MOV even if you lose the match....

Rules states: "When calculating a score, each player receives half the total squad point value (rounded down) of each enemy large ship whose combined total hull and shields, including any Hull Upgrades or Shield Upgrades, have been reduced to half or below."

It does not state this is only affect. So if I get 1/2 health down on a Decimator but I lose the match, I still get 1/2 for points destroyed. Am i reading this correctly?

Regardless of how the match ends, if you have a Large ship that has taken half damage, you opponent gets half points.
