Special Forces TIE is almost certainly coming

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

It's a newer model of the same old TIE Fighter.

To use a modern military comparison, the Super Hornet is an upgrade to the old F/A-18. Except it is such a drastically different aircraft it is almost always represented differently in military sims. The Tie/fo is the same way. Superficially similar but everything that actually runs the ship is different. So yes it is absolutely a new ship. Also given that apparently the First Order has a crush on the old Empire, visually emulating one of the most visible signs of their military might would be something they would do.

In game terms the things run completely differently from a Tie/ln. Also seriously a lot of the named pilots for it would not have worked in a regular Tie.

But they didn't have to. And they shouldn't have. Because it didn't deserve to be. Because it WASN'T a different ship.

In terms of the actual lore you're basically completely wrong. But really, how is it not a completely different ship, made in a completely different era, by a completely different manufacturer, to an obviously different set of design principles. The fact it even has shields makes it obvious that they are not nearly as throwaway as the old Ties were.

What if the TIE interceptor - the OT "new and improved" TIE fighter was represented in X-Wing by a different miniature and a Title card but not a different dial?

Doesn't seem like a relevant comparison.

Regardless of how much you say the TIE/fo is a different ship, it just...plain...isn't. It's a newer model of the same old TIE Fighter. The TIE Interceptor isn't a TIE Fighter. It actually IS a different ship.

The point is, it's a different ship in the game because FFG chose to make it a different ship. But they didn't have to. And they shouldn't have. Because it didn't deserve to be. Because it WASN'T a different ship.

This is all conjecture, you know that right?

We haven't seen the movie so it could indeed be a very different beast than the TIE/LN.

Getting a new model, with a different paint scheme, dial and stats indicates to me that it is indeed different enough to warrant a new toy.

After all, cars that are the same make and model have significant differences in performance over the years.

Case in point:

Ok, fair enough re the Interceptor, but...

Do you feel similarly about the T-70? Should it have been a title only upgrade with the same dial as a T-65?

Irrespective of my poor Interceptor comparison, I believe my point still stands ... If you are showing an updated/improved iteration of a ship why is a new dial not a valid option?

The T-70 and the TIE/fo are both updated/improved iterations of the T-65 and TIE ... and they fly differently.

The point is, it's a different ship in the game because FFG chose to make it a different ship. But they didn't have to. And they shouldn't have. Because it didn't deserve to be. Because it WASN'T a different ship.

Ok, obviously you're very passionate about this, and it's not my intent to upset or anger you.

Will the T-70 and the TIE/fo do anything in the new film that we didn't see T-65s and TIE fighters do in OT?

I don't know as I haven't seen the movie, but truly I suspect not.

All I know is, that when I put down a film-accurate miniature reproduction of a 'modern' T-70 or TIE/fo on the table I want it feel and play differently to a T-65 or TIE.

Honestly yes. New model for the movie, but from a game mechanics standpoint, still considered an X-Wing, with a Title.

Personally, I feel bad for people who already have a ton of X-Wings(or TIE Fighters), and then the cool new thing comes out that is clearly just more of the same thing, and it can't be applied in any way to the things they already own.

I don't. I want OTHER SHIPS to feel and play differently from the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter. I want the updated version of the same ship to feel like an updated version of the same ship. More shields, an additional action, a new high-tech upgrade slot? All good. New dial and new ship type that requires separate pilots? No thank you.
