New card brings up the multiple "crit" question again

By Admiral Terghon, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Assault Proton Torpedoes = Black Crit: Deal one faceup damage card to the Defender.

So if you use this crit effect, and there is still damage going through to the hull of the Defender, do you flip the first damage card dealt AFTER this the Assault Proton Torpedo card? I argued no, since triggering the APT effect is the use of the one crit effect allowed. My opponent said that upgrade cards don't count as an "attack" for limiting effects. I know that's not right, but how do I explain it?

If you use your crit to trigger APT you do NOT also get to use the standard crit result (first card face-up).

Indeed. The relevant passage is RR p.4, Critical Effects:

• The attacker can resolve only one critical effect per attack.

• The standard critical effect is “<crit>: If the defender is dealt at least one damage card by this attack, deal the first damage card faceup.”

Therefore, during an attack with APT you can choose to resolve ONE of the two critical effects available to you:

EITHER

Deal 1 faceup damage card to the defender.

OR

If the defender is dealt at least one damage card by this attack, deal the first damage card faceup.

This card is a lot more interesting than I initially thought.

1. If you do not make it through shields you still do a face up damage card.

2. If you roll 1 crit and three hits and the opponent does not have shields you Deal 1 face up damage card and four face down. It effectively turns 1 crit into two hits.

I can't imagine an scenario where I wouldnt use the crit of APT unless I wouldn't kill my enemy...

The fact that you don't have to cancel the attack (unlike Dodonna's pride) is really powerful.

No I would use it every time.

Remember that the Crit happens with APT BEFORE damage is dealt so you can get a crit that destroys shield zones, deals extra damage, etc.

This is the way I play and the way I tried to explain it. They were arguing that "per attack" doesn't count the upgrade card. Reasoned discussion was not an option unfortunately, anything more from me beyond 5-6 words would get interrupted. This also led to the loss of a VSD in an earlier game when he claimed a hit with XX-9 Turbolasers always did 2 face-up cards, even if only 1 damage got through the shields.

I was disappointed at this type of play in the Massing at Sullust event, I had hoped for a higher level. I had also hoped that the game store would actually support the event, but aside from buying the kit (and doubling the entry fee when not enough people showed up) they did nothing. We had to manage the tourney ourselves using the Tournament rules here on the website. And of course that meant that the most aggressive person made the decisions.

So, is there a FAQ entry or article somewhere to clearly point out how crits work? The rules are apparently not clear enough (though I thought they were).

I am sorry that you had this issue.

The crits are pointed out in the Rules Reference Guide.

You can only select 1 crit per attack and you resolve that crits effect.

XX-9's dont deal 2 automatic crits, you have to be dealing 2 damage cards to get them face up.

Self-promoting or not, the videos are more helpful/relevant, and far less annoying, than the constant references to "military intelligence". If you're going to drop one habit, please drop the latter :D

(it's early in the morning and I haven't blown up any Rebel scum yet) ;)

Terghon you lost you last game because he performed an illegal double crit on you?

Its chris btw

No, I lost it because of my brain-dead deployment. :) But the Margin of Victory was far higher than it should have been because of a number of plays that were contrary to what I believe is correct rules interpretations. All else being equal, playing the rules the way they should be would've left a VSD on the table. But really, I lost that game before the first activation. No idea what I was thinking. :)

But the wonky rules interpretations and having no TO or judge to go to really spoiled my enjoyment of the Sullust event. I tried to explain the correct way, but kept getting bellowed down so just gave up arguing. I'm all for a rational discussion, but I don't like arguments where volume and repetition decide the outcome.

Yea, overall id also agree, I dont like tournament events because of the hostility it can breed and though when I faced you it felt very natural and relaxed our opponents were doing a number of things that were really starting to bug me, wont go into detail here. Plus that many games in one day really left me quite tired by the last match!

I've normally found tournaments for FFG games (X-Wing, Armada & Assault) to be really relaxed but my second game at a Sullust event this weekend was pretty bad. Fortunately my 1st and 3rd opponents were absolute gents and great fun to play and chat with.

Hopefully it was the potential to win shiny unreleased toys that brought out the worst

I let my opponents have 1 mistake with the rules which was corrected right then, than I enforced the rules with no take backs. I found that it got people into the mindset.

I won't be so nice for the Store championship.

I encourage you to give this guy the heaviest sanction avalable. Don't play with him anymore.

It's got to be demorelizing when your tournament opponent just gives you the match, rather than playing you.

Not if you truly believe in "Winning at All Costs."

because that's a cost you'd pay for an easy win then.
