New player. Epic question

By Spook75, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Apologies if this has been asked before but Google didn't assist me in finding an answer.

Played my second Epic scaled game today. Bought a new ship to help out, the nice rebel transport. Upgraded it with the EM Emitter as I was going to use it to be an obstacle for giving my Tantive IV some evasion. So when a TIE Defender shot at the Tantive IV I rolled my three evasion dice. When I shot back, my friend picked up six evasion dice.

I would be under the impression that when I fired "through" my own ship, my allied ship wouldn't be assisting the TIE Defender and that he would only get the evasion bonus from distance. But he argued that firing through a huge ship, any huge ship would confer the bonus AND that he would benefit from my EM Emitter.

Why would I pay for an upgrade that would limit my own firing capability. Is he correct and I'm over thinking this or would this setup only benefit the player who equipped the upgrade?

Another golden rule: do what the card says not what it doesnt say. It states your ship obstructs attacks (not just your opponents attacks. It says the defender (not just you).

The card says... "When you obstruct an attack, the defender rolls 3 additional defense dice (instead of 1)."

I would think you and your opponent played this card correctly. It doesn't specify the attacker or the defender affiliation. I think it can benefit or hender either one. Neat rule. Maybe one of the veteran players can confirm.

It's not like your Tantive knows it's in the way of a friendly ship and so won't be as obstructing. In the way is in the way.

You might have been looking for the tactical jammer. Observe the wording:

Tactical jammer: Your ship can obstruct enemy attacks.

EM emitter: When you obstruct an attack, the defender rolls 3 additional defense dice (instead of 1). Limited.

Sadly, the tactical jammer cannot be equipped on a huge ship, but it illustrates how the difference in wording is important. So yes, the EM emitter obstruction works both ways, sorry.

Thanks for the feed back!! I did some more homework after I posted this and it looks like Dahs Rendar will become part of the crew on the Tantive so any shot from the Tantive won't be obstructed!

Thanks everybody!
