How terrible is this list?
I love slave 1 with recons, however the lack of pilot skill can hurt you. Unless you are running a swarm, you always want to shoot first. I would suggest just one Firespray, piloted by a skilled pilot (preferably boba). Then add more ships. More ywings could work, skilled ywings would be nice, a mini swarm of head hunters for blocking would be the best option.

Your list is fine, though I am sad that you can't replicate the TLT Y in Empire, as BH + Recon is better for the points.

No, it denies the opponent the ability to do so.
Also, Barrel-Roll.
Shooting First only matters when you achieve the Kill, or if you can strip off a defensive focus that also would have been used offensively.
