Star Destroyer model

By Wolfstan, in Star Wars: Armada

Saw the new models today and I'm sorry to say that I think that the Disney Die Cast version looks better, apart from the colour scheme. FFG has the better of it. The FFG Destroyer to my eyes seems too short and the rear end too wide. Any body else been in a position to compare?

The other models look really nice and I do like the look of the Raider.

Yeah they got it wrong. Compare it with star destroyer picks on the movies (see link) and you'll see that the bridge is wider than the distance from the gun batteries to the widest point of the ship. With the Armada-model it is reverse. The bridge is slightly smaller than than the battery-edge distance.

Still looks pretty cool, but no it's obviously not quite the same as the movie models.

really we are that nit picky? FFG gave us a truly imposing impressive looking model that looks and feels like an ISD. Then due to production delays flew some product here so that we could get it early. Lets appreciate that.

Wtf, of course we are that picky. If they sell us high quality (and high price) star wars models then they should **** well be movie identical, especially for the most iconic ships. Some creative license with the EU ships okey, but the ships we see in the movies should be accurately represented. Otherwise we could just as well be playing Random SciFi Wargame 742-b

You know there is three star destroyer models too right ?

model is awesome. I have zero idea how you can possibly think otherwise but perhaps an eye appointment is needed ? :)

I haven't actually seen the Die Cast model yet. I'll say that I love the Armada model. It looks so majestic.

Let me wipe the saliva off........

K, the command structure is the right width compaired to the top deck.....

Can't tell to much more, given I don't know the location of the camera and appeture/focus settings used.

Lets see

Looks close from this angle, unless we are trying to make a reason to kill more Bothens?

How many ISD movie models did they have? At least 3? Are they all identical?

They are not. We know that the Devastator from Star Wars and the Avenger from The Empire Strikes back do not look the same as that's the Canonical reason why the mark I and mark II arose in the expanded universe stuff.

I didn't know they had a third model, be interesting to know which shots it's in and how it differs from the others.

I am not sure why this is really an issue. . . We have a sliding scale and this monster is just that an intimidating behemoth.

you know the game's kicking ass if this is the best we have to point out

Had a chance to spy the ISD at the Sullest Tourny I was at. It looks amazing so I don't know why there is all this hate. It's even got some heft to it when I picked it up... Six weeks for it to hit retail release... :(

Sitting here holding the model (yes I won it and I will tell everyone) I must say it gets 12/10 it is incredible! And while I guess the Command tower is Slightly Smaller then the one in the picture it Still Looks AMAZING! (And aesthetic wise the smaller tower looks better imo)

Hate you. . .

:D

I feel really lucky to have it, wait there is no such thing as luck only the force. And I reeally am the most practiced player in my area so my chances were pretty good(funny thing out of 6 2nd and 3rd place were both of my opponents)

I'm just a bit disappointed as it stands out to me, but obviously that's just my own feelings, it also means I'm unlikely to rush out and buy it. I'll bulk up on Raiders first. On top of this I was planning on only collecting Imperial stuff, but Home One does look nice, so could be tempted :)

The "third model" was the little brass star destroyer:

Cronkite footage

In 1980 George Lucas led a televised visit to the ILM special effects workshops. Among the important models that he demonstrated were the full-length model of the Executor and the larger scale model of the brim trench region from near the prow. Interestingly, there was a small star destroyer model sitting atop the Executor model off to one side. The size relationship between these two models matches that of the star destroyers seen moving over Executor's wing during the approach to Hoth and Captain Needa's shuttle scene. It seems very likely that this star destroyer model was made to exactly the same scale as the Executor for the purpose of making these shots.

Also, the 91 Devastator model was used in TESB, as well as the bigger Avenger model- but modified slightly - trimming down the array between the domes.

There is one, small, thing. Not the size of its butt, nor its bridge. The com tower on top of the bridge. The antenna should sit on two pylons with a space between. This space is instead filled with the tab used to secure the antenna to the ship.

So, in protest, you should send me all the ships for proper disposal. Justs keep shipping me the defective ISDs, I'll tell you when to stop.

I'm not saying I don't like the model, in fact I think it looks gorgeous. That said I do expect the models to be movie accurate, if they are not like the OP indicates, than that is a failure on FFG's part and warrants critism from people like me who place value on accuracy. If you don't share that sentiment that is fine, but don't go about ridiculing people with a different opinion.

And there are indeed 3 ISD variants in the movies, the ISD-I (Devastator) which has a different communications structure on top of the bridge:

The ISD-II (Avenger) has a flatter structure on top of its bridge:

Then there is the Tector-class which is visible for a second in the Endor battle scene, it has a reinforced reactor and no hangar bay.

The FFG model is that of the ISD-II

I love the model. it looks amazing and will look better after repaint. It doesn't have the mold lines some of the other ships have had and it feels really good. Also it is very imposing (as it should). I expect my opponents to pucker their sithpipes tight when that thing starts its opening salvos.

I wouldn't be able to do a good enough job to paint one. With maybe the exception of the tab holding the antenna in place, the ships one flaw. They were forced to do it for structural reasons, so it doesn't bother me to much, like the engines on the Y-wing. But, in both cases, the fix is a dab of paint in the recessed aria. I think even I could handle that.

The FFG model is that of the ISD-II

I think they didn't actually make a separate model for the Tector - but took the big Avenger model, and did some custom work on the underside - removing the reactor dome, covering over the hole, and covering over the hangar bay.
