$15 at my store. We had 7 people. It seemed pretty fair to me.
$20 to play at Sullust?
My local store is also charging $20; I decided it wasn't worth it to pay the cost of a Raider / MC30 / Fighter pack for a chance to win the ISD or MC80 - at that point you're not playing for the top 4 as advertised, you're playing for top 2; if you only play one faction, you HAVE to win for it to make sense.
Unrelated, I offered to just buy the entire kit and they said no.
And this would be inductive of the type of attitude I was speaking towards when I mentioned gamers treating a game store like a soup kitchen. Topped off with an offer for the store to risk it's ability to get product/events from FFG.
I'm sorry for the stores that have to deal with this stuff.
I wa Sberbank bitching about the price and I come away with Home 1 AND the Squadron pack.
Im sorry.
My store is charging $20. But, they also add extra product if they have a good turn out.
We paid $5 at my local store, Huzzah Hobbies in Virginia, 13 people showed so they took a loss, but the owner is a real supporter of his players. They even did a draw for the 5th pack for those who didn't make top 4.
$20 is more than fair if the turnout is 6 or below.
a store in my area was charging
Price:
15$ at 10 People,
20$ at 8,
25$ at 6
and 35$ at 4

how does that logic work? if you win any of the other 3 ships you essentially played for free, got an advanced copy of a wave 2 product a couple months early and played in a tournament which was/will be a lot of fun
of course winning 1st or 2nd are definitely better but i feel like you might be a bit greedy
i'm also glad they shot your offer down. The kits are for people to compete and have fun, not for you to get everything early just because you want them early
MC30c is $30. So the top 3 get a bonus.

As TO I set it up that way with my stores. They are charging $20 a head and if they get about 8 players all the extra goes into gift cards that I as TO get to distribute.
Canadian here, so the tournament pack price was pretty obscene with the Canadian dollar being in the crapper AND the normal markup from American to Canadian (grumble). Was $20 at my FLGS but when eight people showed up instead of six, the TO decided to add a prize for fifth place instead of keeping the fifth piece for himself. Overall I was happy to pay $20 to play, and hope the store will continue to host events in the future.
At Game Headquarters we traditionally have a $5 entry for regular tournaments (spring and summer kit this year) and a fee of $10 for Premium tournaments (Sullust and Store Championship).
our store charged $15 (i set it) but ran a MoS/Summer Kit Combo event. We had just enough people to cover the cost of both kits.

We had 8 and the squadron pack got dumped into the prize pack. Plus, Muffins for ALL! I think the Muffins may have pushed the day into the red, they were good muffins.
$20 at my FLGS. Five people showed up and everyone won something. Plus I got to play 3 games and most importantly I had fun. So yes I certainly got my money's worth, and the TO said that they broke even.
The store I went to advertised $10 but then charged us $20 when only 4 people showed up. Now, I understand the cost issue and losing money, but there are a couple points to consider.
- They did nothing to support the tourney short of buying the kit. There was no TO or judge. There was plenty of empty space for anything else that was going on.
- While I don't want a store to lose money, they did nothing to promote it beyond a Facebook Event. If it wasn't for one of the store regulars tagging me, I wouldn't have even known about it. There wasn't even a poster on the event board, or a note, or anything. And the employees didn't know about it either. I shouldn't have to pay for their lack of interest and promotion. Run it right or don't run it is my opinion.
- Because of the surprise price change, the lack of a TO and judge (leading to some poor sportsmanship and rulings/play I know were wrong) I did not have as much fun as I was expecting (and normally have at such events). Certainly not $20 worth of fun.
Due in part by the mandatory price doubling, I won't be returning to that store for future events. Nor, of course, will I purchase from them. There are other stores in my area and all ran the event better, with entry fees of $10-15.
Edited by Admiral TerghonBoth events I attended were £15 and there were 11 & 14 people at them.

We also had muffins. Makes me wonder if we're in the same store ![]()
We paid £7.50, and we had the Rogues pack and a summer tournament pack added to the pool. There were 12 of us. Pretty great deal I think!
I played at a store charging 20 and a store charging 10. All depends on how many they expect.
I came home with an MC30 and an Alt-art ISD ship card for my $20. Pretty good deal.
Well, we got the expensive Canadian price and it was a little higher than normal even so, $35. I regret nothing, it was a nice venue, the TO was terrific, the rules were altered a touch for 8 people in a casual environment (we could only fit 8), and the prize support and community was fantastic. The 'consolation prizes' that people got: one of Mel's Dreadnaughts, an Imperial Navy Handbook, sacrificial dice as burnt offerings and a maneuvering tool.
The venue was a little cramped though pleasant, but we got a delayed start time because of a Pokemon tournament which cut our number of rounds. More over, I think it was a Canadian distributor thing, but we got no warning about what was being scheduled and when. I only learned that there was a local Sullust event 2 days before it happened. Then it turns out there was a second event was being held the next day. Both were apparently notified on the 29th.
I'm miffed that I couldn't go to the second day's tournament. The buy in was $10, but it started earlier and I honestly just wanted to get some more games in. -sighs- Oh well, Sullust was a success for me: I had fun, learned I'm more competent than I gave myself credit for, and just happened to pick up a raider at the same time.

I'm sorry you feel my analysis of the situation is greedy. I'm not sure how you arrived at that, but cool!
The offer to just purchase the entire kit was neither offered by me seriously nor taken seriously by the store.

I'm sorry for the stores that have to deal with this stuff.
I have spent literally tens of thousands of dollars (US) at this store over its life, predominantly on 40k but on several other game systems as well - I would certainly not consider that "treating the store like a soup kitchen."
To top that off, the store charges for play space, a fee I gladly pay in addition to my purchases.
I don't know why you seem to have taken this so personally - none of this changes that a $20 buy in (the most expensive in the area) for a chance to win $20 worth of prizes is silly. The event still happened so clearly my opinion is not unanimous... and nor is a personal attack on anyone who decided it was worth it to them.
a store near me required a membership to their store.
The offer to just purchase the entire kit was neither offered by me seriously nor taken seriously by the store.
OK, but it wasn't explained with this clarity when first posted.
Can I also ask, if you have spent more than $20,000 what would another $20 have been to play 3-4 good fun games of a game you enjoy? Again there seems to be a disjoint between what you are saying and doing here. I will spend thousands at this store but I draw the line at him charging an entry fee to cover his costs of having my play a game at his store. Having re-read your post you basically claimed that unless you won more than the $20 entry fee it wasn't worth it, because the main prize wasn't the games to be played, the social aspect, getting those toys earlier than any one else, your motive was explained as a greed based motive.
People are not putting words in your mouth, your retort "none of this changes that a $20 buy in (the most expensive in the area) for a chance to win $20 worth of prizes is silly" is pretty clear on your stance and no one so far is misinterpreting you here.
For many of us the prizes offered by a tournament, that make the cost of entry worth it isn't the actual prizes but the intangibles. Vykes post goes a long way in explaining these.
Our store just sold the ships from the kit and never announced a tournament. They didn't even know what "Massing at Sullust" is. They ended up selling the ships from under the counter with a significantly marked up price. No idea what happened to the tournament set or alt cards.
