Is that normal or sheisty?
$20 to play at Sullust?
Sounds like some skullduggery to me!
2/3 I know in the San Diego area are $10 the other is $15. Depends on the store, they set the price.
Depends, if they're expecting 4 players, $20 sounds right.
If they're expecting 12 players, maybe not so much.
It's high, but not so high as to be shady.
More than likely they don't expect a high number of players.
I think it depends on how many players they expect. Honestly its up to each store and how bad you want a shot at an early Wave II vessel. You want a better chance at winning attend the smaller event.
Edited by Wes JansonDepends. If it is a smaller tournament, the kit costs three times the normal kit price. So the store owner is likely taking a loss if he doesn't charge more than a regular tournament. Obviously the more players in a tournament, the less a store owner will need to charge to break even, or turn a profit.

We have 5 tournaments going on and 2 of those days there are 2 tournaments each day so getting $20 is perfect. The stores get the most out of their packs to make up for the difference and people are able to win ships costing more.
I paid 20 yesterday and walked home with an MC30.
We are charging $15 and only expecting six so store is gonna lose money sadly. Kit was $150.
I was actually impressed that my store is only charging 15$ since we will be lucky to get 6 players.
If you think about it and your store only has 4-6 players that pay $20 who are almost guaranteed to win atleast $20 of merchandise the event is a steal!

Then 2/3rd of those San Diego stores are going to look back and wonder why they ran an event that likely lost them money, and probably many won't bother next time.
This kit is nearly 200 dollars of retail peoduct, cost plus freight for special item shipping is easily going to run stores somewhere around 100 dollars. At ten 10 you'd need 10 players just to break even on the kit. In that space that you have to give to run 5 games of Armada you could fit at least 25 MTG players and charge 5 a head, and not have special order a 100 dollar kit.
We gamers need to stop treating game stores as soup kitchens and expecting stores to price events at a point in which the store is going to lose money to host it.
My store has a listed entry of $30 but 14 people signed up and they will be adjusting the price once the final count is there to only really cover the kit.

Your store is likely to not run themselves out of business. Good for them for being sensible and ensuring that the event will be worth running.

WHAT! WOW
All the stores in Portland paid $90.

$90US ~ $150CAD
Bank-to-Bank Exchange Rate puts $90 US at abut $120 CAD. Factor in the fact that's Bank To Bank and Certainly not a Consumer rate, Plus additional International Shipping through the Distributor... It makes sense.
... As Disgusting as it is.
Edited by Drasnighta£7.50 in my UK store here. Works out at about $12+, so not too bad.
Plus i won, so totally worth it in the end!
Yup, my store is charging $30 CAN, which was still an expected loss if we hit 4. Things are expensive up here!
Of course, we throw store credit in to prize pools if we get more players than expected, so it's not like we're ripping people off no matter how many people we get. But I don't think many of the players here realize how much expense there is on the store's end to run events like these. Just because one store is willing and capable of putting themselves in the hole doesn't mean the rest of them can.
We rescheduled a 16 player Magic tournament to fit the space for this event; consider what kind of money that means the store is missing out on before we've even started.

yeah our CAD is absolute shite right now. 0.75 to the USD
and just a couple years ago we were around par, with just last year being 0.90, which is around what Canadians are used to.. this new dollar is horrible for us considering most product we receive comes from the US
i've been seeing X-wing small based ships that are supposed to be priced at $15 MSRP now sitting at $20 in most stores just to turn a profit
Game stores are not to be taken for granted. Support them, and they will be around for you to benefit from.

Then they're not holding the tournament to the Rules.
My local store is also charging $20; I decided it wasn't worth it to pay the cost of a Raider / MC30 / Fighter pack for a chance to win the ISD or MC80 - at that point you're not playing for the top 4 as advertised, you're playing for top 2; if you only play one faction, you HAVE to win for it to make sense.
Unrelated, I offered to just buy the entire kit and they said no. ![]()
I don't understand that attitude, I guess... Mostly because my brain goes "Because the Alternate Art Cards and the Day's enjoyment are Cost Neutral."
I'd pay $25CAD to play for the day with the structure, and the time, and the attitude of a tournament, but that could be because its something I can budget time for, whereas just a regular day out to play is something that happens so infrequently.

how does that logic work? if you win any of the other 3 ships you essentially played for free, got an advanced copy of a wave 2 product a couple months early and played in a tournament which was/will be a lot of fun
of course winning 1st or 2nd are definitely better but i feel like you might be a bit greedy
i'm also glad they shot your offer down. The kits are for people to compete and have fun, not for you to get everything early just because you want them early
Edited by executor£15 here in sheffield. They have room for a max 12 people and are going to give away >£100 of kit (retail).
So even if you half that, once they've paid for the room and all that I think it's okay.
with half the people walking away with a prize too it's all to play for ![]()
