Am I correct in thinking that familiar's do not have defence dice?.

Nope, depends...usually it the familiar is treated like a figure (you'll see the details on rulebook) it uses defense dice too.

Leewroy is correct- some familiars aren't figures, and can't even be attacked. Others are treated like figures, and can. In either case, the familiar should have a card (if you just have the base game, it is only the reanimate.) This card lists all tbe stats of the famioiar. The reanimate does not have a defense die, but might get one as the result of a skill or ability.
