Took home an MC80 today in a 6 player event (Wicklow, Ireland) - came second. Was a tie on VPs, but lost out on countback. Still, not complaining as I play rebels

We managed to get all the games done in under 80 mins each, but still had time for some epic moments and great laughs.

Took:

AF2(B): Dodonna, Gallant Haven, Advanced Proj, Expanded Hangers

CR9(A): Tantive IV

CR9(B): Dodonna's Pride, Raymus Antiles

3x B-Wings + Luke (controlled by the AF2)

2x A-Wings (controlled by the Dodonna's Pride)

The B-wings and Luke did the heavy lifting, but Dodonna's Pride as a mini carrier more than paid for itself with some very long range black dice in the form of A-Wings

I also went to the terrific AFK event in Michigan and was lucky enough to take 4th and the squadron pack despite going 1-2 thanks to the games being close. My d'oh moment was finding out in the last round that something I was told (I have no idea where or by who. Maybe it was in the teaching game I had way back when?) was totally wrong and I could fire through my own ships just as if they were obstructions. Somehow I just accepted that despite running to the rule book to check everything else. But they were great games and in round 3, although I did lose, I stopped a Rhymer and 3 bombers and 4 advanced with my 2 advanced squadrons, leap-frogged the mass of fighters with my Demolisher, and then took out Rhymer so that with all of those squadrons, only Rhymer and one other bomber ever got to fling a longer-range die. It took most of the game for what was left of that to regroup, so I'm counting that as a moral victory! The big takeaway for me, aside from that there were a few important shots I could have taken, was to always have something to modify dice. Re-rolling 1 isn't anywhere near sufficient with the number of blanks you get. I'm going to use Vader every time, maybe leading shots, since my Tarkin VSDII might as well have been crewed entirely by stormtroopers! All in all, I learned a lot and had a great time.

Just finished at the event I attended. I won 1st place and got my beautiful ISD! There were 6 players and 4 of them were imperial. I went 7-3, 10-0, 8-2. We didn't have enough time for the final 400 point game, because the store was going to close and honestly after 3 games everyone was a bit tired.

My List was 3x vsd 1's (one had motti and the other 2 had gunnery teams), and I had 4 generic tie fighter squadrons. I faced 2 different 2xVSD2's + Demolisher lists and one fighter heavy rebel list. All 3 games I had the choice of initiative and I decided to go second every time and my opponents chose minefields every game.

So, of the 8 players (4+4), it was a staggered finish, Imperial(24), Rebel(19), Imperial(18), Rebel(18) and imperial(16?).

The top two had some rocky patches, The final winner getting a 5/5 in his first match, only because his T.I.E. LN managed to put the last point into a Guppy. Then the player that finished second got tabled in his second match .... still pulled out a 10 point final match for the 19 point second.

Most had fighters, some had bombers as well and some went the all ship route. The top player took 6 TIE LN that saved his bacon in the first and last match. His last fight, against a all ship force, they pin cushioned a Glad as it came in. It only lived long enough to get off one shot. That done, they turned on the flag ship, 5 hits on 6 dice kinda wrapped it up. All ship invincability, I think not!

The prize round didn't go according to hoyle, first, the top five got a pick, as the store owner didn't keep anything back. Second, as some of the winners were from out of town, the top two glared at each other and agreed to let the other take the ship they wanted.... K, top two were Rebel and Imperial, so that was easy. Of course we all opened the ships so we could all take a look, but then real life called.

We still had some rough patches, a player took two VSDs with out gunners cuz he has never had two ships in his front are before.... I intend to give him some training on how to pin Rebels down. Consentrate fire, spending the token and dial sepratelly .... need to .... look into that ..... All in all, that's just playing more to make sure we have it down. Plus, I learned a thing or two, so I better keep running, the youngens are catching up....

My take away, last time we had 6, this time was 8. Even with some of the hard core having to miss it due to this thing called "a life"? So, Armada is picking up steam.
All ship supremacy isn't a thing here, yet. So lets hope the S&S* pack keeps it that way.

Argh! Just started trying to assemble my MC30 and found that the stand is broken where it should connect to the base. Whilst I have every faith in FFG to come through with their usual customer support, it looks like I may have to wait a little longer to play with my new toy in all its glory after all >.<

Only 5 participants at my local Sullust event, but everyone walked out with a prize at least. I finished first in the Swiss, but lost the final round. Winner took the MC80, so I still left the store very happily as I cradled my new ISD

The entire point of this thing is to play the final round so we can get some war stories of the new ships.

As a fellow Australian disappointed to not get Sullust either, the idea of people having to wait around and watch 2 people play a game with new ships (so lots of fumbling and checking details) sounds utterly terrible and not fun at all.

Which is why if i get a top table tomorrow i am going to try and get 3rd and 4th place to run with us - make a nice 400 pt 2v2 battle.

And I did just that. Got into the top table with the highest score. Agreed with the other guy which ships we wanted (I was rebel, and wanted the MC80, he wanted the ISD) and once everyone else picked their prizes we each made a 200pt list and played a game, with the guy that had Rogues and Villains controlling all the squadrons. MVP of the game went to my new friend's MC30 Scout Frigate, which pounced on an already activated ISD, hit it with an Ackbar Broadside, then double arc'd it to go first the next turn, at point blank range.

Personal opinions - things die FAST between the MC30, MC80, and ISD throwing around some fairly ludicrous amounts of dice. Both MC80 and ISD can be tanky, but both are vulnerable to fast black dice using ships (GSD / MC30). I almost lost the MC80 to the same double arc fun that the MC30 pulled, vs a GSD, on the exact same turn (and immediately following the MC30's activation).

No question we all loved the imperials as there wasn't a single rebel to be seen at my Sullust. I went with two VSDs and most of the squad aces, an interceptor, and a couple bombers. I got spanked a bit my first round, and then tabled #2, and had a hearty enough win on #3 to make it to the final round.

I had never to date played rebels... I went in the final round with all but one of the new rebel squadron aces, the MC80, MC30, and a corvette. I wound up with the initiative and picked mine fields as the lesser of three evils. After some rather poor luck trying to navigate the mines, I was able to line up both my MC30 and Corvette to get destroyed by the ISD's first shots (had gunnery team). I was able to wipe out his raider and nearly a gladiator but my MC80 just couldn't take the hits from the VSD/Glad/and of course the ISD to get much farther. Was a bit stressful trying to slap together a rebel fleet, but good to see how the other half lives once in a while. I have to say the dice both the MC80 (went with Ackbar and enhanced armaments) and ISD spit out was quite impressive. Mildly obscene, but when you think about movies ships don't typically shrug it off, they get decimated.

A good time was had by all. It was booked solid at 16 initially, but only 7 showed up day of. It was pouring rain all day long. The shop even gave the 5th ship out to players (announced before we even began)! A two hour drive from my house, but Meeple Madness (Flowery Branch, GA) is truly the best game shop I've ever seen. One I wish I could frequent more. I make it a point to seek out game shops and I've seen them all throughout the US and several throughout Europe and Asia. Definitely worth your time to drop by if you are ever in the area.

So, Sullust was my first actual tournament (As I said before, I'm usually tournament fodder for others), and, well, it was pretty fun and thankfully casual compared to other events that I've observed and helped with. Met a lot of great people, nice to know there are some other Armada players. It was pricy (double what other Sullust events cost, at least) but nice. We had a turnout of 8 out of 8 spots. The buy in was high, but everyone won something in the end (Including one of Mel's Dreadnaughts!). Lo, harken unto me! Let it be known that rebellious warlords doth converge in frozen hinterlands, far from the Imperial Centre! 7 Rebel players, 1 Imperial, that was a surprise.

I was put against a new player in the first round and found myself in a dilemma: do I go with my nature and act as a teacher and be as helpful and friendly as I normally am, or do I go for the throat to win in a casual environment? My my, those ISD's look tasty, and I was second player despite an 8 point bid to his 9. And lo, we engaged in battle!

After 2 hours, the game timed out at the bottom of turn 4. I'd ripped the shields down and rattled an assault frigate and lined up one of two corvettes between Paragon and Yavaris. The last was bugging out way too fast towards the long table edge (It would have been a casualty me thinks). The fighter battle was going on in earnest, something that was more abut me holding back a wave of Y-wings and X-wing escorts while his B-wing was put out of position. The result when we looked to the table sides... my Lions had lost a single flight of A-wings and my opponent lost single flight of his Y-wings. He won, 11 points to 10. I didn't mind one bit. I think between us there were 6 squadrons left at 1 or maybe 2 HP thanks to some oddity between counter, escort and ship point defence in between the spread out waves.

Second game was a little more conventional, but it was almost an identical list to my first opponent: Advanced Gunnery was going to be interesting, but I was fairly confident, what with Paragon and all. It was a tough enough fight against a heavy rebel fighter list all swarming around Gallant Haven, but I did my best to pick my fights, and my woefully outclassed fighters managed to actually nip at my opponents heavy squadrons (Acing 2 A-wing flights with my Y-wings and the single Yavaris command of the night came as a surprise when it cracked open an X-wing escort with my B-wings. It was left to run amok after that. Unfortunately for me, one of his B-wings slipped past the net and punished me for it).

He did his best to split my echelon of Assault Frigates in a very heavily concentrated asteroid field. I didn't think any rebel would fly headlong into the teeth of 2 assault frigates with a frigate support and fighter cover. It worked, kinda. He had me swing my flagship into a cloud of debris, hoping to avoid concentrated fire from his whole fleet. He then slipped the Gallant Haven in front of it with Leia's surprise command,, boxing me in and having me grind up between it and the debris field which sincerely hurt. It got pinned between Gallant Haven, an X-wing strike force, and eventually, Dodonna in his speedy little corvette. That said, his frigate found a solitary patch of free territory, his trailing Tantiv IV didn't. I swept in close with the Yavaris and he just ran out of room. He ended up ramming the Yavaris and nailed an asteroid field, which essentially took the Tantiv out of commission and left it limping. It felt weirdly cathartic to have such a bizarre mirror collision take place. But he just couldn't quite take the Janus down, even pouring in dual broadside from the Gallant Haven after switching from that tough little Yavaris. The Janus even stood up to those broadsides and his sniping flag-vette. It ended up speeding up, and having to ram the Janus, taking off its last pip of health and prompting, “I'm going to need to see your insurance information.”

That said, it left the Gallant Haven perfectly situated for a point blank shot from the Yavaris and the Paragon. The Yavaris hurt it, and the Paragon obliterated it. Splitting the eschelon was a success, but the cost was far higher than the loss of the flagship. Dodonna, with his dying breaths, directed a B-wing on my Yavaris. It did just enough damage to bury the poor frigate (It would have been fine but I missed the station repair by no more than a hair. 2 mm at most. I'd love a Nebulon with a Redirect instead of that Evade too. C'est la vie, eh?). Paragon blotted him out of existence moments later. Tantiv was left to speed by, jinking past the site of that burning wreck and ending just a touch outside of the Paragon's max range. It seemed that the ruined husk of the Tantiv might get away as it banked... It came in too hot, and ended up just off the table. And that was it. Paragon was untouched, most of my squadrons were intact, but my opponents fleet was gone.

That was it. There was a Pokemon tournament at the store before us, so we started late and only had time for 2 rounds. My opponent from the first game came in just ahead of me, and took home the MC30 I was kinda coveting. I regret nothing! It's a what I'm waiting for. I was just a little bummed that no one but me took up the offer for a third round, let alone actually seeing the big final 400 point battle. Oh, me? I walked away with a Raider.

I was pretty excited about what was going to happen next. I set up my list, looked over what worked, determind I was happy with its performance, and merely switched Yavaris with Salvation to punch just that little bit harder. Onwards to day 2, now that I was feeling confident!

And so I woke up bright and early, where upon I was told I shouldn't go out by my SO. I mostly listened, kinda.... I didn't. My Cosmically determined punishment, car trouble on the connecting highway. I missed the whole thing.... But hey, I got a Raider on my first try! There's nothing left I want for my Imperial fleet after my pre-orders come in, so it all worked out and now I'm looking forward to more.

Today I played in the Massing at Sullust at a shop called Beyond the Board here in Columbus Ohio. Really nice store and a good TO. Friendly players all around. However it was my first real tournament and I had to learn a few things the hard way.

The story was 3 Imp and 3 Reb. I ran my Imps with:

VSD II - Screed, Gunnery Team

VSD II - Overload Pulse, Gunnery Team

GSD II - Demolisher, ACM

I wanted some fighter, but the build did not support them. I really designed this to fight double Assault Frigate lists. Of course there were none of those...

Round 1

I played against a Rebel with an Assault Frigate, a Neb B, and a CR90B. He also had Dodonna and a bunch of fighters. 1 B-wing, Luke and a 2nd X-wing, and 2 A-wings. I made him 1st player and he choose my Advanced Gunnery. He made the CR90 his objective ship and I made my flagship it. Deployment had me clustered but he pretty well spread out along his edge.

It developed that my GSD attacked his Neb and CR90 while the VSDs focused on the Assault Frigate. The GSD destroyed the CR90 and the VSD and GSD managed to take out the Neb. Both VSDs together destroyed his AF, but not before it was able to destroy my flagship. And my GSD flew off the board. So I lost the GSD and Flasgship Objective VSD vs. his whole fleet. His fighter were strangely ineffective, but he had them spaced out too and the B-wing was way to the side.

Round 2

My opponent had 1 VSD and 2 GSD. He had expanded launchers on one and ACM on the other GSD. The VSD had Screed and OP too. Here there was a bad ruling that certainly did not help me. The TO misread the clarification on things like ACM in the FAQ and thought the expanded launchers added 2 black even at long range. That hurt a lot. But that is how they played the first round, so I stuck with the ruling. We played Contested Station with me as player 2. Things were fairly even with my GSD doing a fair amount of damage and killing one of his GSD when the other GSD basically one shotted my VSD flagship. On 2 red and 5 black he rolled 4 crit/hit and an accuracy. My shields were already gone and he accuracied my brace. Boom. Things went down hill from there.

Round 3

I played another imperial who was also at his first tournament. He had a VSD I and a VSD II. He ran Motti on them and had plenty of fighters. Vader, another Advanced, Rhymer, another Bomber, 2 TIEs, and an Interceptor. He choose me as second player and we used my Contested Outpost again. All the VSDs ended up pointed at the outpost, but my GSD was pointed at his VSD and fighter swarm. Second turn I made my critical error. I fired the GSD II on the fighters then navigated through them all at speed 3 to fire a broadside on the VSD I. That left all his fighters to my rear and my attack really wiffed. The fighter return fire was fierce. With Rhymer and where I was all of them got to pound my rear shield. I took 3 hull and lost most of my shields before it was done. Then next turn the VSD I used her black dice and polished me off (with a CF side arc I believe.) I lost the GSD for very little effect.

Meanwhile I waffled on if my flagship should target the VSD II coming at the station or the fighter carrier. In the end, I had my front arc pointed squarely between the two and unable to hit either. I eventually got to a point where my other VSD was bumping the on coming VSD and just trading front arc. While I sat on the station for 4 turns and keep him outside distance 1, eventually his bigger hull (from Motti) lasted longer than mine and he blew me away. The other VSD tried to salvage it by killing him, but I missed. He had 8 damage out of his Motti 10. Sigh, another loss.

In the end I went 1-2 with a total of 10 tournament points. Out of 6 players one other guy and I both had 1-2 with 10 points. Another guy had 0-3 but had 13 points so took 4th. I find that really odd, but so goes life. At least the TO let me have two of the ISD cards which was really all I had expected to get today. And I got my first win.

Did two games. Lost the first by 8-2. And end up playing the final game. The mc80 took a pounding from a demolisher frontal then ISD II bow. But was still standing. Finished off the ISD only to have fett kill it with his auto dmg. Won 7-3. Got yhe mc80.

On sunday was only two folks won 10-0. Mc80 manage to survive three. Ow shots from the ISD II. I messed up and slowed down due to the mission of contested outpost. And the ISD rammed the mon cal twice but he also ended up on top of astoroods twice. Won 10-0. And I took the ISD, raider and the bounty hunters. He took the rest since it was just two of us.

Well, tournament two over, and I fared far worse today. Definitely learned the hard way that fighter heavy builds aren't the way to go. They can help, but they're a huge waste in points if they don't run fighters. Oh, well. Live and learn. Already building a 400 point fleet, and including the Raider I got yesterday. That should help against pesky fighters.

I fully intended to get my butt kicked, but I pulled out two solid victories (and a 2-8 loss unfortunately). Favorite part was having a guy ask if I could teach him my list so he could run it the next day at a different event. Close second was seeing the shocked look on my first opponent (and the nearby TO) when he realized I outbid him on initiative (I ran a 292 list). Came home with the Raider and the guy I went with (who up to this point had been my only opponent) went home with the MC-80.

Yep, that Shrimp put a hurting on my new ISD, but that is the happiest I think I'll ever be getting lit up .

Ackbar is one mean mofo. And Biggs is probably the best TO around. The final round group play was great, and everyone got to use their new toys.

I'm loving all the stories. Minor to major details, it's all good!

I really am enjoying my Garm 2 AF MkII B with gunnery and ap, Salvation Neb Escort, 2 B Wings, and A Wing. It's just enough damage and it tanks well. And worst case, can survive a match to draws well.

I could have taken Home One but the poor lad that I'd spent weeks playing before hand in friendlies and convincing I was rubbish, only to table him in my first match, looked so down beat that I opted for the raider. I feel that I lost out a it really, but got a moral victory............maybe

At a 4-5 player game on saturday, a Rebel list with two Assault frigates with flight controllers, bel Iblis, and 4 xwings & 4 ywings won.

Today at the tourney I went to had 9 people, 6 imperial and 3 rebel.

#1 - 1 VSD with Chiraneu, 2 Gladiators, and 3 tie bombers.

#2 (me, yay) - 2 VSD2s, w/ gunnery teams, Motti on one, and H9 warlord the other. Fighters were Rhymer, 2 bombers, 1 advanced, 2 interceptors, 1 fighter.

#3-4 one was the winner from Saturday listed above, and the other I believe was 3x VSD list.

#5 was a pair of heavily upgraded MK. A assault frigates w/ both titles, mon Mothma, adv projectors, couple other upgrades, and for fighters 1 b wing, Luke, & Farlander

Amusingly I played each of the three rebels, none of the other 5 imperials so no blue on blue.

First game was against a 2 guppy, 1 corvette, and some fighters (wedge, 1 ywing, a wings I think) led by Dodanna. Tie for pts, he won coin flip. He chose for me to go first, I chose precision strike. Can't remember a lot of the details... Long day... Think I blew up one of his frigates and all his fighters, he almost killed a VSD, 9 damage on it. His paragon spent most of the battle at extreme range and was out of the fight for the first 3 turns. I won 8-2, would have been a 5-5 had the VSD blow up.

Second game was against a pair of assault frigates with flight controllers, hangers, and adv. projectors, one was paragon. Commander was Bel Iblis and he had 3-4 x-wings and 4 ywings. He chose for me to go first, I chose hyperspace assault (other choices were precision strike and dangerous territory, didn't like his probable advantage with victory tokens so figured what the heck.). He put paragon and 3 y wings in hyper. My VSDs wound up in a line, he came out of hyperspace and barely missed double arc, I think he expected me to move the lead VSD first, I didn't and I think he overtuned his placement so to speak. He killed most of my fighters for only 1 xwing (Flight controllers with Xwings are brutal, even his y wings were throwing 3 dice). He killed Motti, my lead VSD but his two Assault frigates wound up in front arc of warlord repeatedly and blew both of them up. Won 8-2, he had some bad bomber luck this game, and I avoided Paragons black die most the game... That hyper mix up probably cost him. I've played him two tournaments so far both games coming down to the wire, a very solid list.

3rd game I played a heavily upgraded pair of assault frigates, mon Mothma in command. Both titles, adv projectors, xi7s, gunnery teams, and luke, keyan, and a b wing. Tied for pts, he won coin flip, and took first player and chose my contested outpost. He pincered with the guppies, while I slow arced around the station. My fighters jumped his, and dang is gallant haven annoying with fighter braces. Luckily I rolled well and plunked away at Luke and the b wing. My bombers went after his fighter less paragon. In the end he pincered to wide and I got 4 tokens to his 1. Mottis destroyer was down to 5 health with 4 different crits active. Got within 1 damage of killing Paragon on the very last shot. Won 6-4.

I placed second overall, and luckily the winner didn't want the ISD, he took the mc80, so i got the imperial star destroyer (yay). Unfortunately (or fortunately according to my wife) we didn't play the last round... We passed out the prizes, a couple people left (taking a wave 2 ship or two with them), and the 1st player didn't have time for a full match it was already 7:30 pm on a sunday. I kinda wish we had played it, but I was tired as well and was kinds dreading having to throw a rebel list together. The he family was glad to see me instead of me coming home after 10pm so I think it worked out for the best.

All in all had a blast.

I'll tell you what. That MC-30 is a Beast!

We have a clever group of players, so 10-0 wins are incredibly rare!

I faced off against a VGG List using my AF (Tank) + 3 CR-90s. I sped off with a need for speed!

Originally my goal was to take out his squishy gladiators. But once they started taking damage, they rabbited! Leaving the VSD who was too slow to get away!

I ripped it apart!

With only, sadly, a 7-3 victory margin.

The Final round ended up being:

1st Place MC-80 + MC-30 + CR-90 + CR-90 (Me!)

2nd Place ISD + VSD + RCC

RCC Ran off the field. VSD rabbited once it started taking dmg (What's with you Imperial players? You have more health than me! Stop running and fight!). We called it once I killed the ISD.

The best part was when one of my CR-90As just seemed to disintegrate on turn two! I'm not sure why or how that happened!

But we're just going to call it a controlled demolition of obsolete technology.

Made it through my third Massing at Sullust today. This one was lightly attended, but it was a really fun group of guys. Battle report here:

I said this on my blog, but I think it's worth repeating. In each of the three events the TO wanted to play. However, if they had it would have forced an odd number of players so they sat out. I thought that was really cool, as byes suck. They worked hard, promoted the game, and earned their prizes. Good job to all.

I went to just one this weekend at Rainy Day Games in Oregon (Mikael was taking notes and will likely write a blog about it. He also won, though the two of us never got to play). I took this list and came in second:

I won all three matches, 9-1 (against a 2xAF plus Neb list), 5-5 (against a mini-Rhymer ball, with a 3 point MOV!), and 6-4 (against 1xAF plus 2xNeb). All of the opponents were very respectful, honest, and a joy to play against. Definite "fly casual" atmosphere even though there was a lot at stake. There were 5 of us and we unanimously agreed at the beginning to play 3 Swiss rounds with no final round instead of 2 plus a final. I was fine with this since there was a 3 way tie at the end of the 2nd round, but after 3 rounds it was clear who had 1st and 2nd place. Some pics:
