Live "blogging" 1st Portland 'Massing at Sullust' tournament

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay, so I'm running the first 'Massing at Sullust' tournament at Red Castle Games. Since we have 6 people (other than myself) show up, I'm happily sitting out the playing as the TO. (It's been a week for me, so I'm happy to do so.)

Anyway, we have some players of galactic and local renown, most of them vile terrorist commanders of the Rebel Alliance. Of these, probably the most notorious is Shmitty, a rebel admiral known for his depredations in the galactic core [took second at Nationals]. Other noteworthy traitors against Imperial rule are the rebel warlords Lyraeus (read here for his heinous crimes) and Theia (read here for her crimes against humanity). Added to this list of infamy are two rebel commanders who are doubtlessly guilty of something.

Attempting to reinstate Imperial control is Commodore Naboobo (see here for his heroics), who stands alone for the Empire in this forlorn segment of the Outer Rim.

Gonna be watching this while I am at work.

Oh, Lyraeus, I like your list! Looks pretty similar to what I've been running in terms of upgrades / strategies.

Biggs Analysis of the Fight:

Game One - Shmitty vs Lyraeus

Keys to the game for Shmitty:

Focusing down one of Lyraeus's AFIIs at a time. I'd forget that I had Gunnery Team on the 2nd AFII, and work on setting up multi-arc shots on Lyraeus's 2nd AFII, since it is the most dangerous one.

Protection of his own ships from Lyraeus's B-Wings. Should be pretty easy to accomplish between his A-Wings and Tycho, but they could melt somewhat quick if he deploys them early.

Sacrifice of the Salvation is worth it, if he can drop an AFII in exchange.

Keys for Lyraeus:

Defense of your two ships is paramount. He outguns you if he can bring his line and support to bear on you at once.

First Kill of the game is key as well, as it would swing the exchange of shots back in your favor.

Alpha Strike against the enemy squadrons is the only way you are getting those B-Wings into play - otherwise you're going to be tied up the whole time.

It's round 5 of Shmitty vs Lyraeus

Lyraeus is down one Assault Frigate. Shmitty's Nebulon-B frigate rammed his remaining frigate. In the meantime... oh, that second frigate got killed too!

Commodore Naboobo vs. [name omitted] is in round 3. The corvettes are in the rear of the Gladiator line. One Gladiator is down, as is one corvette. The Gladiators are going head-to-head with the Assault Frigate.

Theia vs. [name omitted] is in round 4 of their game. The smaller vessels are snapping up the victory tokens from the asteroids, and getting behind the assault frigates. Theia is getting a taste of her own usual medicine. Also, the A-Wings and Y-Wings are swarming the frigates.

HNN Editor's correction: Lyraeus' second assault frigate fled for Wild Space, rather than face the same fate as its collaborators in treason.

The rebel warlords are not only engaged in mortal combat for leadership of their pathetic band of traitorous malcontents, they are now also engaged in a dispute over Rebel military doctrine.

Didnt have time to do the rest, had to do actual work related things. I am still watching though.

This is really cool. Thanks!

List 5: [name omitted] (second) vs. List 6: [name omitted] (first) - Superior Positions

Naboobo, for the glory of the Empire, prevail!

He has been informed of the consequences if he does not. vader.png

It is a clear sign of a failing rebellion that they have fallen to fighting among themselves.

In the third round of the Battle of the Five Belugas (Shmitty vs. sTheia), the commander loyal to the faction of Senator Bel Iblis has directed his ordered his A-wing squadrons around the vile warlord Theia's left flank, as his assault frigates follow in a classic line formation. Meanwhile, Theia's 'line abreast' formation (see same page) must come about to port to engage her opponent's ships effectively. (In doing so, her port flank ship has collided with a debris field.

I wish I could be there...I had plans to attend at least one tournament (maybe two) this weekend, but life intervened and I wasn't able to make it. :(

Thanks for putting this up, Mikael--it makes me feel better somehow to follow the action even if I can't be there. Have fun!

In the second round of Commodore Naboobo's expertly-executed fleet ambush of the infamous warlord Lyraeus, the good commodore has aggressively moved his Gladiator-class star destroyers towards the warlord's fighter squadrons in an attempt to engage his subsidiary frigate 'Scars of Freedom'. Scars of freedom is attempting to withdraw out of the asteroid field, to make a cowardly escape.

In the second round of the other internecine skirmish of Rebel militants, A-wing squadrons are swarming around a line abreast of three CR90 corvettes, while the A-wings' wing commander is driving towards his enemy's frigates.

In the fourth round of the Battle of the Belugas, the generally vicious and brutally aggressive Theia considers withdrawing from the field in order to conserve her forces - doubtlessly in the interest of keeping them for the purpose of murdering and violating innocent human citizens of the Empire.

I am expecting turn by turn for the final.

Edit: in character. :P

In a tragic turn of events, Commodore Naboobo loses a second Gladiator, but is nevertheless courageously maneuvering his remaining ship - the flagship - around the rear of Blue Majesty - the warlord Lyraeus' flagship. In a cowardly response, Blue Majesty is firing its afterburners in order to flee the asteroid field of battle.

The unnamed rebel commanders meanwhile are engaged in a fighter-on-capital ship brawl.

Second round:

List 1: Shmitty (first) vs List 4: Theia (second) - Advanced Gunnery - ENDED - 7-3 (86-0)

List 3: Commodore Naboobo (second) vs. List 2: Lyraeus (first) - Fleet Ambush - ENDED - 1-9 (0-186)

List 5: [name omitted] (second) vs. List 6: [name omitted] (first) - Superior Positions - ENDED - 1-9 (159-316)

Third round:

List 1: Shmitty (first) vs. List 3: Commodore Naboobo (second) - Advanced Gunnery

List 6: [name omitted] (second) vs. List 2: Lyraeus (first) - Hyperspace Assault

List 5: [name omitted] (second) vs. List 4: Theia (first) - Advanced Gunnery

In round 3 of the battle to capture Garm Bel Iblis' less-regarded cousin, Shmitt Bel Iblis, Commodore Naboobo's line of Gladiator-class star destroyers are doggedly driving for Bel Iblis the Lesser's flagship.

In round 3 of a rebel challenger's bid to dethrone warlord Lyraeus' hold on the Caluula system, Lyraeus' assault frigates are once again on the run from a number of squadrons, corvettes and nothing more than a Nebulon-B Escort Frigate.

Elsewhere, in round two of a head-to-head onslaught of more rebel-on-rebel fighting, the brutally inhuman commander Theia's assault frigates are trading turbolaser fire in a bloody fray of merciless combat.
