MWG and X-wing

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

They're maybe a 5 hour drive for me. Too far to do just for that, but close enough that I could be in the neighborhood someday.

I've been enjoying watching the videos despite the rules mistakes. I can't complain about getting more exposure for the game.

Pretty sure this was the first X-Wing batrep they did - and its awesome

it's pretty bad that such a well established channel can't find people that can read a thin rulebook.

We all made mistakes when learning but we didn't film it and tell others how to play.

I loved their early videos. those played a part in getting me hooked to X-Wing! Now that I am pretty fluent in the game they cause me headaches, though. I still think they have a good entertainment value. Would be perfect if they put up some annotations at places where they had rules screw ups, because I think this type of video is perfect to hype someone new to the game. I'd love to do that if I had the time, camera equipment and editing skills!

There playing the game, there having fun, there not running a tournament... why does everyone expect every video to have a tournament list...oh wait that's all anyone EVER records!!!

Just enjoy the casual game and quit nitpicking.

Yes except they broke so many rules that are central to the game mechanics. It's not even about the lists as much as it is they clearly didn't read the actual game manual, just the Learn To Play booklet.

Like, for a channel devoted to tabletop gaming you'd think following the rules would be somewhat important to them.

Pretty much I was focusing on the rules and not the missplays or the odd list set ups such as stealth device on an X-wing. It was interesting to see 4 X-wing square off against 4 Kihraxz fighters. However I did find fault with the target lock after a K-turn and no adrenaline rush or anything else to remove the stress.

For a company that's trying to produce good wargaming content It's odd that MWG's standard for X-Wing batreps has actually gone down.

Some of the earlier Batreps with Matt and Dave were really good fun, and at times downright hilarious.

Sure they had a few rules slip-ups and the lists were sub-optimal, but they showcased the game quite nicely.

Presentation was good, editing was top notch. but playing according to the rules were at beginner's level. Forgetting to assign stress and shooting at ships that are touching (and Arvil is no where to be found) these were some serious mistakes.

Sure I'm not totally super critical on stuff like on things that might require an FAQ. I could forgive them if they forgot the simultaneous fire rule or did an after battle report and calculated the MOV wrong. Many people do that. But again with basic rule mistakes such as shooting while on top of an asteroid (without Dash <crew>) and taking an action because you forgot to stress after a K-turn that requires an annotation at least.

It is nice to see a major table top gaming channel start to produce X-wing videos though.

Those are some of the worst Rebel builds i have ever seen in my entire life.

Like, just.... jaw-droppingly bad.

The first video was the worst and when i saw it i groaned. When i saw his opponent was flying RAC and Fel, i didn't even bother watching past the introduction.

Episode 3 absolutely should have been a Rebel loss but somehow it wasn't(because the scum player was terrible). The rebel player barrel rolled into an asteroid. Cause you totally can do that. Because it is totally a brilliant decision to put expert handling on an A-Wing and not, you know, Push the Limit or Outmaneuver. does anybody even use expert handling? I've never used it once. And they pulled an extra card from the damage deck when they got direct hit, which is also Very Legal. And that time when Boba shot someone hilariously out of his arc. Twice. And when the Scum player performed a red on Bossk when he was stressed and they didn't follow the rules to give the Rebel player the dial to choose.

And then.... He just... attacked someone... who collided with him...

Episode 5.... X-Wing PS2 generics with Stealth Drives??? No Astromechs with enough points to mount them all with R2s or R5s???

AND THEY WON?

Oh, right. Kihrahxs. Or however you spell that. With the same Scum player from last time. Go figure.

God, this is some of the worst X-Wing i've ever seen. I feel like i contracted super cancer.

I assume you play a lot of CoD

I assume you make a lot of bad assumptions.

I'm more of an Arma III kind of guy. Rainbow Six 3, etc.

Not sure how my choice of shooters effects my ability to point out blatant rule violations on a popular tabletop gaming channel.

Anything that gets more players into the game, I'm all for. But man, if you're gonna fly as casual as these guys are, you better not have one side of the table dropping RAC Fel. Jeez. And you KNOW that guy knew his list was 1000x better than his opponents. What a jerk.

The Rebel list looks as though it was built with the contents of only a few ship boxes, and there's nothing wrong with that. I started with my own fair share of wonky builds because that's what I owned. I didn't have any copies of Engine Upgrade, Predator or Push the Limit, and I had lots of fun anyway. I hope MWG keeps making more videos and bringing more people into the game :D

Yeah, he's the same guy that played SuperDash in another one of their reports against a casual list.

Like yeah we all like to joke about how bad the lists there were, but lord knows i've run some bad lists because it seemed fun. That doesn't really bother me, it's more like "haha wow that's a really bad list". It kind of just goes back about the rules. I understand that in casual games the stricter rules about missed opportunities and such not being a big deal, but they ignored some very basic rules that are gone over in the Learn To Play booklet. Again, wouldn't be an issue if this wasn't a popular youtube channel for this sort of thing. The fact that neither player understood or caught those rules implies to me that they learned how to maneuver, how to shoot, and how to perform actions and then tossed the Learn To Play booklet out the window.

As I said before, playing uneven list is not such a big thing. Even meta lists have bad match ups against other meta lists. and even if one meta list is facing against a quirky list that is fine. As long as it isn't illegal such as Having both R2-D2 crew and astromech cards then the list are just fine.

This is the big deal I was making. Yeah I know it is casual so does it matter if one or both or neither teams run meta lists? Nope but again when missing a stress token after a red maneuver and then taking an action when a ship should be stressed. That is something worth pointing out. Sure I am certain if I did a video of an x-wing game and posted it on YouTube I will receive harsh criticism from everything to my choice of squadron list to which maneuver I selected on the dial and might even forgo a miss opportunity or two. That is fine, as long as I don't try to shoot the same ship when bumped or ignore obstacles and stress when making actions when I'm not one of those pilots that have exceptions.

I think he was going from your choice of words there. "I feel like I contracted super cancer" is a juvenil phrase that you would expect to find on a COD server, the Hearthstone community (boy that can be a terrible place) and Twitch chat in general. The average age here is higher and there are more people who have had to experience in one way or another what you are talking about, so "jokes" like this really have no place here.

I don't mean to be rude, I have played a fair share of "Eboladin" and "Cancer Hunter", I just want to make you a bit more sensitive towards the right place for the right phrase.

I think they're just trying a bit too hard.

The earlier batreps just felt like a couple of guys getting together for a laugh, a game, and some banter - and were really entertaining as a result - you weren't expecting strict play, so you weren't disappointed when you didn't get it

I don't mind terrible lists (although leaving out Chardaan Refit for noe good reason is pushing it), but they get more rules wrong than I did in my first week of playing. Really offputting.

This should NOT be the place to make fun of people playing the game, even if they aren't doing it 100% correctly.

I would agree, but being Miniwargaming they should have someone play these battlereports that has read the rules minimum once. Nobody forces them to upload videos after all... So i guess its okay to adress this.

All is forgiveable, the unbelievably bad lists by the MWG player, the sloppy positioning and also the really bad play on some turns. I mean lets face it l, especially the MWG player has no clue what his ships and his enemy's are capable of doing most of the time. But not everyone is a competitive player and that's perfectly fine if you only play casual.

I would not normally watch these videos as i mainly watch batreps to learn something. A new list idea, how to fly certain ships etc. Here you don't have that, but really, it's okay.

But some of the riles mistakes they make and how frequently they commit them is really a turn off. You make these videos for fun, but also to show the game to interested persons that could start playing. So you need to pay a minimum of attention to not show them outright wrong stuff.

I'm as casual as you get but the frequency of mistakes is unacceptable in what's supposed to be a professional operations don't forget they want people to pay for content on their main site the videos on you tube are meant to entice you.

It's not two mates sticking a video up, it's a well established gaming channel so you expect certain standards to be met.

I think when you are aiming at promoting X-wing to the masses you have a bit of a responsibility to get the rules right. I've only been playing about 5 weeks so I thought these videos might prove helpful but even I spotted some glaring rule errors that are incredibly misleading. I think it rankles because of the nature of the mistakes, it isn't misinterpreting a somewhat ambiguous conflict between upgrade cards, they're getting clearly printed rules from the book wrong.

Going to play devil's advocate, has anyone, outside of comments on the page, contacted them to let them know how badly done the rules are? I mean if the quality of production is up there, it might be they are missing rules mostly because this isn't their main game. So how about giving them some constructive feedback and letting them know they are royally screwing the pooch?

I've been considering that, but I'm giving them some time to learn from the comments. If it's anything like their 40k reports, all of the videos we've seen posted in the last few weeks were recorded a while ago. At least for 40k, they do read their comments (especially on their page). Assuming they do the same for X-Wing, they should hopefully get things fixed in videos they haven't recorded yet.

Also trying to come up with some way to go challenge them... because they seem like fun people that I'd love the excuse to go meet sometime.
