Making the most of the YV-666

By malladin.ben, in X-Wing

I really like tech that counter ships flanking the YV. I've had several games where a lone 2 attack dice ship was able to take out a YV-666 by getting on its tail and dogging it to death.

So:

  • Anti-pursuit lasers: when a ship gets on your tail, stall out and make 'em run into you
  • Ion projectors: same idea, different implementation
  • Feedback array: if you get too close, I zap you! Combos with the APL or IP above
  • A ship with wingman: indefinitely stall by running your wingman into you to keep removing stress (stmack's idea)
  • Intelligence agent + maneuvering fins: shake that annoying tail

Sample list: Slaver + HLC + K3 Droid + Intelligence Agent + Outlaw Tech + Feedback Array + Anti-Pursuit lasers, Black Sun Ace (Kihraxz) + Wingman + Glitterstim, Black Sun Ace + Crack Shot + Glitterstim

Probably not very competitive, but fun to play! And you get to say "Crackstim" or "Glittershot" when you pop the 'stim and Crack Shot in the same round :-)

The more I play with it, the more I love the YV-666. Strange because I hated the Shuttle so much and they are very similar.

On the Trandoshan Slaver, I have a hard time deciding which setup I prefer:

Bossk+Gunner

Outlaw Tech+K4 Security Droid+ (either the anti pursuit laser or tactician)

Bossk+Gunner makes the ship a very good sniper, especially with the 180 line of sight and being able to stay at the same place, especially if you also take Inertial Dampeners to stay in place 2 turn in a row; Who cares about stress when Bossk is there to give you a Focus and TL? Drawback is that there is way around gunner and you might end up doing just 1 damage per turn if you barely hit with your first shot, or if you are going against 0-1 agility ship.

Tech+K4 gives you a little bit more flexibility and consistency overall. You are guaranteed to have at least a focus or a TL each turn. Better against low agility ship, but worst against high agility ship like Interceptors or Phantom.... although can tactican help against them.

My favorite Bossk list is:

-=//\\||Bosskortunist v2.0||//\\=-

50 - Bossk + Opportunist + Mangler + K4 Security Droid + Tactician + Mercenary Copilot

27 - Palob + Veteran Instincts + Twin Laser Turret

23 - Spice Runner + Greedo + Twin Laser Turret

Last time I ran it with Greedo on Palob and a 22-point N'Dru for a 3 ship 7 PS list that worked out decent, but this list has more focused firepower. Mangler auto triggering Bossk's ability and then merc copilot adding an extra crit on top or tactician triggering is just awesome. Palob's VI seems weird, but letting him fire before or move after Bossk gives you some flexibility.

Yes, I have no way to auto crit outside of primary arc at range 1-2, but at range two I still get tactician and range one is an extra dice, so it's a decent setup.

50 point bosk seems a risk to me given you don't have EU on there so can't even attempt to arc dodge.

Last game I played I stripped a yv666 down to four hull on my first combat turn of the game.

Valid point. Engine Upgrade is generally not my style... I know it is for most people...the elites and whatnot, but I generally do not use it. If my opponent has the swarmy firepower to take down Bossk quickly, engine is not necessarily going to save me (probably going to get blocked for action denial anyway). Anyway, the OP has two lists for the YV-666 that are 48-50 points, albeit with engine on one of them. I figure for one of my fun casual lists, this is pretty potent.

If I wanted to get serious with efficiency I would run 3x Cartel Marauders with either a 40-point Bossk or Latts, or with a slaver and some fancy upgrades and a few illicit upgrades on the marauders.

I've flown Bossk and Eval in casual games. They were great.

Eval with HLC, K4, OT, and tactician is a brute. He devoured a TIE swarm with the help of Black Sun Aces (stimm, Crackshot).

Bossk I ran far too fat but I wanted to try several things. So he had title, gunner, marksmanship, tactician, K4...too fat. But fun. I'll streamline him in the future but his extra damage from crits was noticeable. It triggered 3-4 times.

The next 666 that I'm trying is Slaver with gunne, Bossk, and tactician. Paired with 2 mauraders and Torkil with ICT. Just wish I could get dampeners on slaver.

After logging some more hours in the cockpit of a trandoshan slaver, I am pretty much happy wiht this setup:

Naked Slaver (29 points)

The Prince + VI + Title + AdvS (36 points)

They both stick together, the 666 absorbing any hits while the super-agile Xizor checks the six. The white 3 turn and 180deg arc work pretty good for the 666. With AdvS and a white one turn, The Prince can outfly anybody and still stick close to its escort. We tried some one on ones with just Soontir + PtL vs. The Prince in this exact setup. As Soontir has to fly first, Xizor can easily arc-dodge him thanks to AdvS.

Anyway, the big question is: How to spend the remaining 35 points? I tried the generic Firespray, it's not bad - but maybe there is a better add-on to the combo above. Thoughts?

Gekko, you could throw in Talonbane with engine and predator. Two PS9 ships. Talon is hard to ignore. Could swap predator for crackshot and stimm since he is likely to go down first.

Good idea, haven't tried the K-Rex yet!

Rumors have it that Talon goes down pretty quick. Maybe a generic K-Rex, and Z-95 for 32 points? Then I could add the Outlaw Tech to the 666, which would be so good when you just hit the brakes after the first round of fire!

I've done exactly this, but with the addition of the Hound's Tooth title and two Z-95s. That's a lot of hit points for opponents to chew through, actually more than the classic Xizor + 5 x Z-95 swarm.

Edit: Also, Autothrusters! Those things are standard on almost anything with Boost these days.

Seeing that many of you favor Marksmanship on Bossk.. Ever thought of using experimental interface to activate it after another action?

I'm Krazzi for Razzi. I flew her with K4, Weapon's Engineer, Engine Upgrade, and Bossk pairing her with 2 PS 1 Vipers with Autothrusters. Wrecked stuff.

Going to try again with this Khirahz thingy - some coked out crackshot aces should make the bang big!

Tried one kind of similar this weekend. Razzi (Hound's Tooth) with K4, Weapons Engineer and Intelligence Agent and 2 Black Sun Enforcers + Autothrusters. Played 4 games (3 in a tournament). Tabled 2 (Scum A'shera, Kath and a generic M3A, and Imperial Fel, Phennir, Bounty Hunter) opponents although I did lose 1/2 points on Hound's Tooth using new scoring and the other game I lost the Hound's Tooth and only got a B-wing (vs. 3 B-wing's and Horton Salm).

It's a lot of fun, and I'm working into using it as the foundation for a Team Epic event.
