Off Topic about the old ordenance affair

By Hexdot, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I write here because this is of no interest to the competitive player, and perhaps this is a silly post but I want to share my experience. First of all, I have never played a tournament, but I am a dedicated x wing player.

If you only play competitive, stop reading. If not, give me 30 seconds of your time. I read again and again that torpedoes suck, waste of points, better purchase a filler ship... And, lets face it, the Ordenance rules are simply broken. But it is not a drama !!! Many great games have little incongruences in the rulebook that needs a little change.

Simply try this...WHEN YOU FIRE A TORP/MIS THAT REQUIRE A TARGET LOCK / FOCUS TOKEN FIRE, YOU CAN USE THAT SAME TOKEN WHEN RESOLVING THE ATTACK.

A little mod to Homing Missiles and now ordenance works !!! Not superb, but a salvo is,a dangerous toy.

Example. You fire Proton Torps. Expend TL. Eye, Hit, blank, blank. Modify dices. One crit one hit. Four points wasted. BUT if you can reroll the blanks because you have expended a TL, it is another matter.

After playing a couple of games we wrote this small but important fix. It works well after perhaps 200 games, not a crazy idea. I know this is very casual but, if you play with a friend, equip torpedoes instead of TLTs and try this. Only once. The

Many of us have had this idea- I still think it's a good one. I was quite frustrated to see Redline's ability, as it is basically this very idea, but given to a single pilot. And that means it won't be an FAQ change. :/

Ive always thought ordnance was backwards.

To me you should be able to target lock in your arc but fire 360 as its 'locked on', that would make more sense and be more like the way real missile systems work to a degree.

it would make ordnance more useful for sure.

Good point. To be able to fire outside your frontal field of fire. I will suggest this variant, interesting.

Thanks

Missiles should have definately been one-shot 'turrets'. Torpedoes should have been fire from the front but all hits should have been crits.

With the ways the rules stand now, there are some ways I've found to make ordnance work:

PTL - target lock and focus (target lock to shoot, focus to modify)

Kyle Katarn - ship takes target lock, and Kyle gives them the focus for modification

"Dutch" Vander - "Dutch" gives away target lock and ship takes focus to modify (I think one of the Lambdas can do this too)

Deadeye and Recon Specialist - one focus to shoot, one to modify

Maybe these aren't ideal, but there are ways to to make missiles and torps work if you really want to, and I'm sure there are more. And of course there's always the old-fashioned Fire-Control System and take a target lock on a turn when no one can shoot you and use it next turn with the focus you take.

As said before, no game is perfect. If ordenance is only useful to named pilots or crewed ships, it is broken too.

4 points Mango or 4 points Proton Torpedoes to equip a 2 red ship is a joke. I probably will be wrong but after years we are still waiting for a fix. And it will not arrive till Second Edition, probably

Umm, guys? Let me introduce you to my good friend, Nera Dantels.

(As previously mentioned, Redline has a pilot ability that performs this "fix"; she does, too.)

As said before, if you need a famous named pilot to fire a Proton salvo, it is not a fix. In my opinion.of course.

This afternoon we will playtest the 360 degree arc of fire idea. Two Tie Bombers ready and well loaded.

Okay, gotcha - sorry I missed that.

I see where you're coming from, but I like Nera so much I had to make sure you were aware of her wonderful ability!

I'm interested to hear how that game goes!

Quite a short brawl, due poor dices and under average flight ( a bad day ). Second turn my Bombers fired Impact Misiles, forward, achiecing zero and one hits. No shoots fired during the third turn, one exploded next turn ( damm TLTs ) and thus I only fired once outside my forward arc, a Homing Misile that caused one damage.

The 90 degree TL limit is a nice idea. We will playtest it again in a few days, now and here I love the TL modifying red dices, but this idea is a good boost, it deserves some attention
