Miranda: Who Comes Down to Lend a Hand?

By Tsiegtiez, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Since nobody from Snowy River is available I figured I'd ask here. I'm trying to determine the best complement to Miranda Doni for a tournament coming up and I would really appreciate some input.

My favourite Miranda build currently is Twin Laser Turret and R2-D2. No frills, no bells, just straightforward. She's incredibly effective if she isn't under concentrated fire, and will always win the 1v1 TLT engagement, even against other Mirandas (so long as they don't have R2-D2). The trick now is to supplement her power with ships that can help against multiple TLTs, arc dodgers, and a Swarm. Miranda can handle a Swarm pretty well on her own through liberal use of SLAM, but skipping shots doesn't win matches.

At the moment, my favourite builds are:

A) Five Bandit Headhuners. 1 point for initiative. I love me a block of Zeds and they can brutalise most other things out there with weight of numbers alone. TLTs can't pierce them as reliably, and Bandits fire simultaneously to Gold Y-Wings anyway. They can block arc dodgers for Miranda to boost her Primary weapon, and can joust with a Swarm while Miranda flanks. Brobots can give them fits.

B) Jan Ors. Jan and Miranda's abilities can stack to make Miranda's Primary a 4-5 dice attack. If Jan bumps Miranda's attack before firing herself, she can use her stress to power Wired and get some dice modification both incoming and outgoing. Jan with TLT, Wired, Nien Nunb, and an Engine Upgrade is 37 points, which leaves just enough room for a pair of Bandits. In a pinch, Jan can boost a Bandit if it has the best shot, or if Miranda is using her TLT to regenerate or fired her SLAM that turn. Jan being able to 4-Straight, drop stress, Boost, and then modify her dice anyway seems pretty solid, but I'm nervous about pricey HWKs on principle. Relying on the Bandits to pull a lot of weight in the 4YTLT fight and that makes me nervous as well.

C) Poe Dameron. The polar opposite of Jan and Miranda, PtL/BB-8/Integrated Astromech on Poe seems like a solid build for 36 points. His options each turn are ridiculous and he's a FANTASTIC flanker. He can draw a lot of hate away from Miranda which helps her get to Late Game where she really shines. This leaves enough points for another pair of Bandits and a single point for initiative. Poe doesn't like being beaten on PS and can be a glassjaw if he whiffs the defence against a single 3-5 dice attack.

In general I feel better supplementing Miranda with more bodies rather than fewer, otherwise I'd look more closely at options like a pair of TLT Golds and a Bandit, two FCS Blues and a Bandit, or even two PtL/Wired Greens...and a Bandit. I'd feel more comfortable with four ships total but I always seem to have to buy at least one Headhunter, and they function better in groups of 2-5.

Personal experience and input would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to practise with all three builds anyway but I welcome different angles or dissenting opinions.

poe with integrated is heresy

put thrusters on him, you stingy git  !

then run a little A-wing in there. They're great little buddies who can keep up with SLAMing Miranda or boost/rolling poe ^_^

or, if you're not above a little heresy, TLT + c3po Miranada with bb-8 + ptl + IA Poe and two Talas fit snuggly into 100 points

Hothie had a list that i have built on after watching his match on vassel it was doni with tlt WSF with HLC and jake with wired and PTL beat brobots i think the best meta will be a bomber and a arc dodger. I really wanted the outrider in the list but jake was to many points so i am gonna try

Doni TLT r2d2

Warden EM prox sismeic advance slam IA

Jake PTL CR AT AWTP wired

Block with thr warden and drop bombs doni does her thing and jake buzz around.

Honestly the Integrated Astromech helps keep his cost down! Heretical maybe but more often than not I'm dodging arcs with him, not jousting; in my last match with him I think Thrusters triggered once out of four times he was shot at. I'd rather be able to just ignore a card in case of monumental failure instead of trusting to green dice (and you know all about that).

And I love A-Wings but I'm worried that if I have a K, a T-70, and an A, none of them want to be shot at and my opponent is going to find a way to target one of them. It's the same reason I don't run Rebel Synergy lists! I imagine the A-Wing would be the one thing likely to be ignored in any given match but I don't see it making up for losing Poe or Miranda early. That said, I can fit a pair of Green As with PtL, Wired, ATs, Refit, and Title and still fit a Tala and ASLAM on Miranda! I might give that a shot, so thanks!

I personally love the HLC Fringer, I think it's one of the best buys on the Rebel side (no Outrider!) and I usually like to put a Recon Specialist onboard too. That said, the HLC Fringer with a pair of Bandits could be pretty solid to block and tackle. The HLC would also be a nice 4-dice attack to punch through high AGI, while the WSF turret and the Bandits could provide reliable damage against TLT carriers or most Large ships. I'll have to give that a shot too!

I do really like that Jake build though; he would be able to keep up with Miranda just fine and be able to shepherd targets for her. The Warden might be a bit pricey for my liking, is my only concern there. Being able to ASLAM some Prox Mines and using the Intel Agent to wreck Soontir or Whisper could very well make up for it though! I'll give that one a test as well I think. I just worry that the Warden doesn't have enough teeth after its Prox Mines to really make its points back if it doesn't KO a VIP or enough fodder. I can SLAM all day erry day and I love it, but I feel the Warden is either put down too soon by concentrated fire or rightfully ignored and it can't pounce effectively when that happens.

I would rather them try to bring down the aarden and with 4 bombs that as more teeth then you think

I agree that Bomber Wardens can do good work but 28+ points for a 2ATK Primary is hard to commit to at PS2. I've tried a pair of TLT/Intel Agent Wardens with Miranda and unfortunately it's just too much of the same; solid damage output altogether but anything that provides consistent attack can bring down any of the K-Wings relatively quickly. Miranda carried that list. I love using a Warden or two alongside an Ace that can dodge arcs well (Jake or Poe are my favourites), or something straightforwardly potent (two B-Wings, some Headhunters, what have you). I worry that things like Aggressors or Interceptors would really give Miranda and a Warden a hard time, and I wouldn't have enough points left for something that could stand up to them better.
