Team Covenant Aces, Season Two Round Seven

By sozin, in X-Wing

I'll be posting the full weekly report sometime today or tomorrow, but thought I'd let people know that a 2014 WC rematch is happening right now on Vassal: WC pheaver is taking on WC elect Morgan. sadly no twitch cast is happening that I know of; if someone is casting; if that changes I'll post an update.

Highlights

  • Morgan’s Soontir+Oink/Palpatine list slugged down Theorist’s 88B+double Thug TLT list. Once again, Palpatine showed how useful he is at keeping Soontir alive.

  • Dom beat the odds, putting on a masterful display of blocking with his Fringer+Jake+Miranda list versus Hothie’s A/B Brobots. Jake blocked B four times, including a critical sequence in the end where he pulled off 3 blocks in a row! A game worth replaying if you want to learn how to muck up Brobots with A-Wings!

  • pheaver and sozin played a four hour match to a dead standstill, ending up with a full-healthy Jake versus fully healthy Red Vet+R2D2. sozin’s Jake+Miranda+Stresstlthog list managed to kill the Poe early from pheaver’s Poe+Red+Talax2 list , but sozin drifted in the middle game (check the 7 minute mark in the video replay, where sozin did a 2 hard turn right instead of heading north towards the asteroids), and Paul came back, converting into a Red Vet+Tala vs Jake ending. After almost two hours of dogfighting later, sozin managed to kill the Tala, and the players agreed to a gentleman’s draw the next day. (pro-tip: when the WC is open to a draw … take it!)

  • StarSlinger72 continues to play excellent X-Wing, this time taking down Kinetic’s creative Vessery+Stele+Alazon list with his Kath+double TYLT list. Things looked bad out of the opening for StarSlinger, losing a TYLT early, but some creative middlegame play with Kath and the remaining TYLT scored him Vessery, after which the Scum squad was able to clean-up on a wounded Alozen and healthy Stele.

  • SideSlip v Matt-Shadowlord was a drama-filled, meta-testing match, featuring SideSlip’s Sensor Jammer Whisper + Howl mini swarm versus Matt’s 88B+TYLTx2. SideSlip did split his forces, sending Whisper to battle the TYLTs and leaving his swarm to handle 88B. The players converted to a 2 hull 1 shield Whisper+1 Hull Howl ending versus a 2 hull 88B, which SideSlip successfully converted. Sensor Jammer Phantoms FTW! After a 0-3 start, SideSlip shows his class by roaring back with 3 wins.

  • In the final match of the week, our Noble Pirate Lord Kelvan Tiberius took the classic Vader+Tempestx3 against league-leading BlairBunke’s Whisper+Backstabber+Tempestx2 build. Kelvan won the critical initiative bid, then lost a Tempest early, and Blair easily converted the resulting middlegame, only losing Backstabber along the way.

Commentary: Ricky: Of course… Worlds rematch. I am very excited to see the Zeta’s in action. They seem like good ships but I’ve yet to fully dive in. Morgan having initiative is huge. His Soontir will get the benefits of knowing where Paul’s Soontir will be. This is a huge bonus. Paul however has a swarm vs a no agility ship. The question of the match will be how quickly Paul can kill Captain Kirk before Morgan’s Soontir kills Paul’s.

Ricky: Morgan (I know we know the result already but I’d have picked Morgan here)

Commentary: sozin: Theorist’s Vader doesn’t have an Ace to prey on, but Chiraneau will have great chances for predation against the PS 2 and PS1 ships in Blair’s squad. Blair went with the BTL-A4 option on his Thugs, which is a risky gambit that could go against him if Jeff’s VTs can boost out of their firing arc. Blair will need to get those PS1 pirates into blocking positions to shut down the Patrol Leader’s engine. Torkil could be a game changer here, allowing his squad to focus fire down a VT before it gets to fire, so Jeff is going to have to stay at range 3 to avoid Torkil’s ability. This will be a close match, but Blair is playing very well right now and should have enough to eke out the win.

Ricky: But does Blair have thousands of programs in his

Commentary: Ricky: Who has the better Ace pilot? Dom or Sozin (Spoiler: it’s Dom). I’m surprised at both of these lists but excited to see how it plays. The problem is I like both the firepower and toolkit of Dom’s list over Sozin’s. Sozin will need R3-A2 to play like a boss to win this.

Commentary: sozin: As the weeks go by, we keep seeing more and more TYLTx2 + Ace lists. The players seem to have agreed that this is a legit list archtype! Our Ignoble Pirate Lord continues to try to make Horton Salm work, this time going with Survivor Horton. SideSlip will give initiative to Kelvan so his Miranda can act after Poe. Kelvan flies his Prototypes like a boss, and he’s going to have to gum up the TYLTx2s flight lanes and hope for range one shots. Poe’s autothrusters should help him survive against longer against the triple TLTs, but with only two evade dice and no regen bot, I’m afraid that he’s going to die under the rain of Tiny Lasers.

Scum and Villainy Prediction

Ricky: Kelvan (**** it… I have Stache power)(Not really tho Anthony has this)

Lyle: SideSlip

Commentary: Ricky: KO brings Warthogs and Tiny Lasers together to in a very good firepower and very good control list. Doug brings the best Y-wing pilot ever along with an xwing and the currently underutilized Miranda (FYI I Imagine her flying the K wing). It’s a nice list and can play the Arc dodge game well. Doug theorizes that Horton doesn’t need actions if he can reroll blanks and focuses. I wonder if Doug has the firepower to kill KO fast enough.

Matt-Shadowlord

Captain Oicunn + Predator + Engine Upgrade + Darth Vader + Ysanne Isard

Whisper + Veteran Instincts + Advanced Cloaking Device + Fire-Control System + Rebel Captive

Tempest Squadron Pilot + Accuracy Corrector + TIE/x1

Tempest Squadron Pilot + Accuracy Corrector + TIE/x1

Tempest Squadron Pilot + Accuracy Corrector + TIE/x1

(98)

Commentary: sozin: StarSlinger’s AccuTempests can make short work of Oicunn if given the chance, softening Oink up for some crit shots from Vader. Feels strange to say, but It’s good to see Whisper getting play time again! Matt’s 98 point initiative bid fell short due to StarSlinger’s VI Vader, so it is going to be an interesting game of cat-and-mouse between the Sith Lord and Whisper. Rebel Captive is going to play an important role in a Vader-vs-Whisper endgame, limiting Vader’s options for full arc dodging shenanigans. If the boosting Oink can stay out of arc and land some Vader crits on StarSlinger’s Vader, things could go south quickly for Starslinger, so he’s going to have to play a patient waiting game before committing to a line. This will be a tight game, but the endgames don’t look good for StarSlinger.

forgot to mention, paul beat morgan last night! vlog download. Some great blocks and aggressive Soontir play to harass Kenkirk.

This is fantastic! I especially enjoy the rankings thus far at the top to view as well. Some great players and amazing games! Just realized a lot fewer of them are in the Galactic Cup than I assumed! Would have loved to have more of them in it to potentially match up with them.

thanks! we just dodged each other in the Tatooine section.
