How many people play scenarios rather than 1vs1?

By Kodiak3d, in X-Wing

First, hello forum! I'm new to the forum and new to the X-wing game, but definitely a veteran Star Wars fan. I've been trying to stay out of this game since it came out because I don't need another hobby, but the models are sooooo cool, plus they make stuff from the video games that I loved so much, so I finally gave in and bought a starter set and some other ships.

I've played other minis games before, but the nature of common/uncommon/rare minis really got annoying. I like that with X-wing there's no randomness to what you buy. Kinda refreshing.

I was wondering how many people get together with friends to play scenario games. I'm a veteran of Battletech, and this seems like a good game to do similar scenarios with where I run one side and allow my friends to run the other.

As for competitions, my LGS has several players who play X-wing. I'm going to go over there soon and check out the scene and see if it's friendly or cutthroat.

I prefer missions/scenarios over death matches. You can build for the mission.

If you like missions check out Mission Control: http://tools.fantasyflightgames.com/xwing/

P.S. Also look for missions by: Babaganoosh

Or search his user name for some of his posts. He has a list of missions.

I only wish they came with suggested (not required) builds so one could print and play.

Raider Missions

Prefer narrative every time.

I play the 100-point dogfight format almost exclusively.

(Welcome to the forum!)

I played the falcon scenario once when we intro'd the game to some new players. Also did a furball as an intro once. It was alright, but I have played only 100 point 1v1 since those two times. The competitive game is just too fun to pass up the opportunity.

Hi welcome here. I have never played any of the mission, maybe I will try them when I play more or get bored of the standard format (though highly unlikely)

I've really enjoyed the missions I've played (mostly the ones from the original core and some of the CR90 Corvette campaign) and it's certainly something I'd like to do more of in the future. However, most people locally seem to play the standard 100 point 1 on 1 games, although we're starting to experiment with that format a bit.

Then stop playing those kinds of (obviously out for profit by manipulating the buyer into paying for stuff they do not want/need) kinds of games. I have been a gamer for almost 4 decades and have never played those games or put up with that kind of C#@p. Welcome to X-wing! Buy what you want... fly what you want... have fun!

And, to answer your question... Yes, I play scenarios... lots of scenarios and not just the (frequently lame/unimaginative) ones FFG publishes. There are some really good ones out there or create your own, based on the SW movies, books, video games, etc... Or base them on historical scenarios, SW starship combat was based on WWII aerial combat after all! Use your imagination and do what seems like fun/interesting, provides for a challenging/enjoyable player experience and makes sense (well... this is Star Wars, so that is optional. Use your imagination!

Fear not, you are not alone in the universe!

I'd LOVE to play scenario games, but everyone over here only wants to play 1v1 deathmatch. :(

Scenarios, 4 or 6 players. If not, usually 40 pts - 2 ships "turbogames"

I think the 100-point squad matches are great for your competitive friends who are really into X-Wing, and like building lists and testing them against other competitive players who build lists. I have two friends I play 100-point matches with regularly. The thrill we get from it is seeing how our lists perform against a comparatively skilled opponent.

I think the missions / scenarios are great for your friends who just play X-Wing casually. I've played most of the FFG missions, and they are great for multiplayer games (I've done 4-10 players - you can scale the points up proportionally) or for teaching the game to new people. The narratives add some spice to the experience that people don't get from squad-to-squad deathmatches. They are especially good if you're building both lists. I also think they are good way to force you to play some different ships, or to think differently about ships that are good at accomplishing a specific objective, instead of being good at killing opponent's ships. Several of the missions encourage creative thinking rather than just burning your opponent's ships down.

I've played a lot of both. I've also played 3 person games and tried a lot of scenarios. I've made up some of my own. I love the Trench Run scenario and printed out enough stuff for a 6 x 8 table with death star paper, a trench, and paper turrets to play with. It's a lot of fun.

I want to do the Raider campaign, but got sucked into regular games this week. I'd probably say I'm 50-50 with scenarios. I think it's an awesome way to keep the game fresh and not just play against the same builds over and over and over again.

I play dogfights, though the way my local group seems to play, it is mainly groups, at least 2 v 2. Which is an interesting way to spice up dogfights, with the team aspects.

I think I like scenario based games quite a bit more. The 100pt meta can get pretty stale. Scenarios allow your to break out of that and fly some unusual stuff. Heck, I like epic scale stuff where almost everything is a basic pilot with maybe some ordinance and a ace or two somewhere on the board. More flying, less trying to find that perfect power combo.

I play a pretty good mix of scenarios and competitive skirmish, and I've put a lot of work into writing missions for Mission Control. I like to think I have high standards in terms of balance, fun-to-play, and being thematic.

Here's some showcase posts I did for a few of my favorite scenarios:

Steel Trap

Junkyard

Gamma Base

In each of these I go through the missions in detail, give examples of the gameplay and rules and design philosophy.

Hey, I thought this thread was dead on arrival. Glad to see it got resurrected. :-)

I'm getting together with some friends this weekend so we can all learn the game together. I've purchased a pretty good selection of ships to start with, and we're all huge Star Wars fan, so I'm sure we'll have fun.

Thanks for the link to Mission Control. I'll definitely get use out of that.
