And on the "fans"... that's FFG's fault, not the prop designers. Why the sculptor(s) thought it needed split turbofans when the prop doesn't have them is beyond me.

TIE Fighters are called Eyeballs, Interceptors are Squints, B-Wings are Crosses, Z-95s are Skulls, the T-70 i've taken to calling Splits.

On a similar logic, I've seen people calling the new TIE/fo the "Eyepatch", which is a bit more fitting as an in-uinverse nickname than "Typhoo" or "Foo Fighter".

That may have something to do with their ability to resolve details at that scale.

There's also licensing issues to consider. LFL may have only provided them with concept art to draw a 3D model, then JJ be like "waitaminute, turbine blades?" but by then, just like increasing forward firepower, it was too late.

Among my friends though we call it the Super Hornet. This spans from a long running thing where we equate the X-Wing to the F/A-18(Because the F-5 is the precursor to the F/A-18, the Z-95 is the F-5).

And since the T-70 is just an upgraded T-65, we call the T-70 the Super Hornet, which is an upgraded F/A-18.

Not relevant exactly, but we call the E-Wing the F-35 because it was supposed to be a do-it-all multirole fighter that was rushed through development into service where attrition rates were high because it suffered from numerous mechanical failures. Just like the F-35.
