Sell me on Armada...

>> remember that this is a very new game. Magic has been around for 20 years. Give it time, and if you want the game to play on, keep supporting it!

I plan to :-). My main fear- and I haven't seen this addressed anywhere- is how long FFG has the Star Wars license, and whether or not Disney will renew it upon expiration. It's in FFG's best interest to _not_ talk about this unless they have the license for a very long time . . . but I'm worried it may be only a year or two. I hope they get a lot of ships in before then.

Frankly, if they never released another wave after wave 2, I'd be perfectly happy. There's enough variety in the game now to keep me satisfied for a very long time.

They just renewed their license between Wave 1 and 2. So they'll be good for a while yet.

Does anyone remember an old 1980s FASA game named Leviathan?

It was starship combat on the capital ship scale and I've not encountered a better one for the visualization and speed of large ship scale combat.

Obviously the community here would place Armada over that game, my question if you remember that game is, can you compare the two?

I owned and played them all. FASA sold it to Nightshift Games.

Legionaire (RPG)...Centurion (Ground Tank/Inf)...Interceptor (Space Fighters)...Leviathan (Capital Ships)...Prefect (Campaign World Assault using all tabletop products).

Interceptor and Leviathan was Hex based but used a 'Thrust' mechanism that allowed for Heading (Direction of movement) and Facing (Direction of your Front) to be seperate. Armada ships drive like cars, with facing the same as heading, with a slight simulation of 'drag'. Damage in Armada is also easy and fast. Interceptor and Leviathan used templated weapons with grid like armor zones and a 'Flow Chart' damage matrix...cool but weighted, meaning heavy.

If you want more send me a private message.

NOOoooo......

I'ld like to see the Lamda shuttle, Gr75 and Interdictor plus new objectives for each.

Me too. I also don't want them coming out TOO soon. I know that it's important to keep up the hype, but I also want to enjoy what I just got my hands on. When X-wing wave 7 came out, FFG started releasing wave 8 spoilers, and it seemed that that was all that the guys at my local league were talking about. Nobody was asking each other how they would fit a K-wing or a Punisher into their list; they were talking about what they wanted to do with Ghost and the Assault Carrier. I'm worried that any day now we'll see the "Introducing Wave 3" post, before wave 2 is officially out.

... God I wish I had some Scotch right now.

For how many years? Do you know?

It's probably 5 years, they release EotE 3.5 years ago and they probably took 1.5-2 years to develop it. For the most part I am speculating, so it could be more or less.....

Why would that be bad?

Why would that be bad?

Because some of us have budgets for our plastic crack habits. Also there is a finite number of cap ships available to pick from without grasping for some real straws. I'm ok with a long lead time as opposed to what X Wing does.

Right, but why does you having a budget make having more ways to spend your money into a bad thing? Like, you're only buying one thing, what does it matter if there is two other things on sale or twenty other things? You'll still be buying at the same rate regardless.

I thought it was generally well done in the only one game I have played so far.

The only concern I have is the alternating shoot-move system. It can lead to silliness like following someone with initiative that pummels you at short range and you can barely reply at long range. The naval war games I've played tended toward everyone move and then everyone shoots for a more 'attrition' feel. This has much more of a highly abstracted 'chess' feel to it for me, mostly due to that mechanic.

The mechanic is unusual and it definitely takes some getting used to, no question there.

Mind you, in the case of your specific example, if you insist on following the ship with initiave knowing it will shoot and move away, it's pretty much your own fault...

You mean Wave 3, after we get the Liberty.

I can only speak for myself, not the person you're replying to, but my head goes like this:

"New toy! Must have it! Can't afford it.... Must have it! It's not even a ship I really care about (some EU nonsense)... Must have it"

Like the guy said, it's plastic crack, the fact you can't (or shouldn't) buy it all doesn't mean you don't want (or have) to buy it all, meaning you're either left frustrated because you couldn't afford to buy something you simply have to have, or you're left skint.

Yeah, to be honest I think I would have preferred a movement phase (with alternating activations like we currently have) and then a shooting phase (again, with alternating activations).

I have had my wave two stuff on a payment plan and have it all paid up now. Could you not buy store credit or laybuy pre-releases?

Doing this has allowed me to stay under budget and still see something and but it on impulse.

Nope. And for me, its even harder, as I commit and pay a certain amount of Canadian as a deposit - but the actual cost will be caculated in USD when it arrives and, of course, there is the exchange rate to worry about - as well as the Bank Charges for said Exchange Rate.

Means i couldn't commit. And probably a good thing to... The CAD dropped so far since Wave 2 Pre-Orders opened, i'd be liable for 15-20% extra.

I'm not saying I won't buy. But the more they spam releases, the less interested I'll be at spending my casual dollars on something I can't afford to buy. I'd always like one of each item, if only to experience the ships.

The local scene for this game is near non existent. It's not like I can just borrow something to try it.

I just don't get it. I'm going to spend the same amount, regardless of how much stuff is for sale. I can't imagine a situation where I'd want LESS products available for purchase.

Except of course where they bloat the product line by releasing obscure EU ships. X Wing, I'm looking at you!

Yoda: Hijacked, this thread is.

Some who can't afford to get the new releases if the schedule is too quick will fall behind on the power curve.

Let's say you can't afford the isd when it comes out, but your gaming group friends can. Well now you're not only weaker in models but also in upgrade cards.

Sure, you can borrow if they have extra or proxy, but that isn't always a comfortable situation where you ask to borrow due to financial situations.

I don't care so much about the cost, I'm worried about a combination of over-saturation over-hype, which I fear has started to happen to X-wing. As I mentioned above, people were so excited about the wave 8 announcement and the sudden TFA release that it took away from the experience of playing wave 7 (at least for me). With all the releases this year (S&V, Wave 7, TFA, the Raider, and the Assault Carrier supposedly being here by Christmas), I'm feeling pretty burnt out with the game. Half the fun was collecting the spacecraft, but with so many being thrown at me I don't have much motivation to get any of them, and I feel a little paralyzed with all the new squad combinations now (I know, many of you like that aspect). It would be even worse if this happened with Armada because of the pace of the game and how long it takes. With X-wing, you can get in 2-3 games at each league night which gives you a chance to try out new lists. We don't have that luxury with Armada. So I hope that FFG does the right thing and goes a little slower with Armada. It'll be more fun for us, plus it'll hopefully keep the game around for a long time.
