Does Obligation work like this?

By Sharatec, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I've played Edge of the Empire a few times, and read it a lot. I thought I understood Obligation, but now I'm not so sure. My question concerns Additional Obligation as per page 40.

I've taken the sentence "each player can only choose each option once" to mean that a player can gain extra starting credits and extra starting XP, but not both +10 XP and +5 XP (for a total of +15 XP). My reasoning has been that +5 XP and +10 XP are both the same option (extra XP) and thus can't stack.

However, now I'm starting to think that +15 Obligation for +15 XP (or 3.500 credits for 15 XP) might well be legal - as long as you don't violate the rule of not getting more extra Obligation than your starting value.

Anyone care to help me?

Judging by that Character Generator, I would say that it does work where you can get +15XP as long as you don't go over your starting amount.

There are 4 options, two for xp and two for credits. They stack.

Each option can be selected only once. So one can't take the +10 XP option twice. One can, however, take the two DIFFERENT XP options together. That would give them a total of +15 XP and +15 Obligation.

In a single-player game, it's possible to start out with 30 base obligation and have an additional 30 obligation consisting of the +5 XP, +10 XP, +1000cr, and +2500cr options each selected once.

Thank you, everybody! Glad I asked.

That's not true...

On page 40 EotE CoreRulebook, just abov Table 2-3 : "Characters cannot gain more additional obligation than their original starting value".

So for a group of 2 players, it's a cap of +20 obligations ; for a group of 4 players, it's a cap of +10 obligations.

Since there are not Default Starting Obligation per player for a 1 player group listed on Table 2-2 on page 40, then I'd use the same has a 2 player group, 20 obligation.

He said a "single player game", meaning only 1 player in the group.

So, assuming that a single player starts with 30 obligation (which I don't know, don't have the book here right now, but it sounds reasonable), you can certainly do it.

Group size adjusts obligation, and is at least 30 for every group (6 players is 5 obligation each, IIRC). I think it even says that a group will start with at least 30 obligation.

Either way, 1 man groups are rare. Since it isn't covered in the book, neither way is wrong. Personally I would lean towards a 30 or 40 obligation for a single player, but I also would probably never start a single player game.

I don't think obligation was intended to work like this. I think it's been clarified previously that that "Each option" refers to XP and Credits, so you can only choose one bonus XP option and one bonus credit option. However, I can't provide a citation for that clarification (thought it was in the old Beta material).

As always, do whatever works for your table. The times I've done character creation, this has been the interpretation, and I've been really loose with those XP limits.

I think you're right and I could swear it was asked an answered. I went ahead and submitted it.

Just remember to make sure the whole party doesnt make you over 100 total.

Right!? I hate not being able to find those responses.

You can have party Obligation over 100. I could have *sworn* this is also discussed in the core book; It basically says if Obligation > 100, the party can't adventure effectively until they get it under control. I'm currently AFB, but I'll try to provide a citation as soon as I can.

This I know, if you go over 100 you can't spend xp.

I was making an extrapolation for a single-player campaign (though, at that point, the whole thing is in the GMs hands as rules are less necessary when it's one GM and one Player).

As for obligation > 100, see the sidebar at the top right of page 43 EotE CRB. "Until the party brings its total Obligation back under 100, none of the Player Characters can spend experience points..."

There's also discussion about thresholds for Obligation on p42.

Hello 2P51,

Yeas, it means that you could take each of those options once. However, from a practical standpoint, you also cannot take more additional Obligation than your starting Obligation. If you refer to Table 2-2, you’ll see that the maximum total additional Obligation you could take is 20, and that’s only if there are two PCs in the game. So there is no scenario in which you could take +15 XP and +3500 credits.
Hope this helps!

So 20 is the intended cap, and each selection once, so for practical purposes it would be 3 selections from the chart at most, maybe 2 if you go max xp and max credits.

I swear I feel like I used to understand this game...

Incidentally, the part of the generator that gets the most questions is the obligation/duty options. I have a long explanation about it in the FAQ.

Thanks for getting it answered, 2P51!
