B-Wing heavy lists in the Wave7/TLT era?

By sablebadger, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Thinking of building another B-wing heavy list, but not sure how well they are doing in the new meta. Our last store tournament was heavy with Swarms, and 3 ship imperial builds with arc-dodgers. I see TLT heavy builds rising in popularity as well on the weekly game nights.

With the new Meta, do lists like the one below stand a chance? I have a bad habit of switching lists all the time, so I want to try and focus on one list for a while, and actually get some wins for a change.

I want to run something like:

Accurate Swarm of B's (100)
Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Accuracy Corrector 3
Ship Total: 25
Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Accuracy Corrector 3
Ship Total: 25
Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Accuracy Corrector 3
Ship Total: 25
Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Accuracy Corrector 3
Ship Total: 25
Or possibly a BBBAA if I can't borrow my son's B-Wing. :)

It's entirely reasonable that against 4x TLT Ys they could blow one of your ships off the board before it even fires. However the same thing goes both ways. I would consider bidding up to 4 naked dagger squadrons and maybe get 2 of them FCS or something

They have simultaneous fire. But you can put hull upgrade on the Bs if that really is a problem.

TLTs perform well against ships that cannot close the gap, and ships that have poor expected mitigations. The B-Wing is solidly in both camps, and is one of its easiest prey.

The best counter to TLT is a Sensor Jammer, as these shots have a low chance of being modified, though one could argue that 4+ agility dice may counter it harder.

Here's the breakdown:

1:3:3:1 is the ratio of producing 3,2,1, and 0 damage results without modification for a 3 die attack.

We're not looking to maximize our damage, however, just ensure the hit.

Vs a B-Wing, we know we'll have to modify dice in the 1/8 chance of a 0, but we may also consider it for the 1, which is low enough that a lucky B could dodge.

So, if it we go with the cautious approach and modify that high, we have a 50% chance of using our die modification on a single TLT attack vs a B-Wing.

There are 4 possibilities, here, of whether you want to modify your TLT attack across both attacks:

  1. The first attack needs no modification, and the second attack needs no modification.
  2. The first attack needs no modification, but the second attack does need modification.
  3. The first attack does need modification, and there is no modification remaining for the second attack.
  4. The first attack does need modification, but there is no need to modify the second attack.

With a 50/50 split in needing to modify the attack dice to ensure the B-Wing is hit, the B-Wing will be hit by both attacks in 3 out of 4 scenarios.

Sensor Jammer raises the requirement of modification to create a guaranteed hit, and also forces the TLT player to use their less preferred action (They like Target Lock for the 1/4 chance of No. 1 up there, holding onto that TL for a future no. 3. Now they must use Focus, or lose the chance to modify the die at all! ).

Having Agility > 1 means that the TLT player no longer has the idyll of being able to skip past the greatest possible mitigation, instead being forced to chance failure.

Once a ship's base mitigation is high enough, the TLT may lack sufficient punch to make it through any defensive actions.

4 agility has the same odds of success naked as 3 attack, at 1.5, but benefits more from actions.

However, it has a different breakdown to get there.

2125/4096 of 1 or fewer successes

1971/4096 of 2 or more successes

VS 2048 of each for the TLT attack: off plumb by appx 01.88%, or less significant than the weight difference of the die symbols or any dents on the sides of your dice. So, even odds.
