Long Time AEG Fan - Any Chance FFG Would Also Pick Up 7th Sea?!

By seventhbeacon, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

This news, plus the new GoT 2.0 have finally given me the impetus to join the forums community at FFG. I've enjoyed a number of card, board and mini games made by FFG.

I suppose this question might be better suited and directed to an email or contact page, but in case there's already murmurs out there I thought it would be worth asking the community:

Has FFG also potentially picked up the 7th Sea I.P.? As a fan of both the card and RPG game, I would absolutely love if they had plans to resurrect them alongside carrying on the torch for L5R! Swashbuckling heroes and villains of a fantasy alternate Europe of the 1600's, with magic and exploration and intrigue galore... how can this not find a strong audience, especially with FFG's track record?

I will be eagerly following the updates for Legend of the Five Rings. This is an ideal marriage of developer and franchise!

The L5R deal doesn't include 7th Sea. You aren't the first to come by in the wake of the L5R news hoping FFG will pick up their favorite game next. So far, we've had Shadowfist, Jyhad and Rage brought up. :)

Let's let them get L5R up on legs, then worry about what's next.

Don't forget Arcadia !

Guardians is the only ccg that FFG needs to buy besides L5R. What's better than bribing monsters with beer, babes, or cash? Besides, the game still has some of the best artwork I've ever seen in a card game and this is a game from 1995.

Ahh, I remember back in the day when this newfangled game called Magic: The Gathering came out, angering a bunch of silly hyper-religious parents who'd grown tired of bashing D&D (and not for all the reasons it deserves to be bashed!) I also remember "Rage". Obviously, one of those games is still around.

Glad to know that the gaming community is thriving, to say the least. It's not like I'd have time necessarily to play GoT, L5R, Star Wars, LOTR, Blood Bowl Manager, Star Wars RPG, X-Wing, Netrunner AND 7th Sea, lol, but still.

haha, my personal wish is that they would revive Decipher's mechanics for the LotR CCG in LCG format, but I doubt if I'll ever get that.

The core design of that game was elegant. Buying fellowship cards gave your opponent the same amount of resources with which to kill you, and the site path design meant that if you fell behind, locations you traveled to tended to be to your advantage and the leader's disadvantage, keeping the game in contention.

While I never properly had a chance to learn those complex rules (tried on my own, but there was really no one in the area playing it, at least that showed up at my main store), I have a deep and abiding love for what Decipher did with Star Trek and Star Wars. Esp in Star Wars with the location-building mechanic. I'd love to see that return to a game. Right now, Netrunner provides the most similar feel to that, and I love it.

I was always more partial to ICE's Middle Earth. Far too complex with a terribly written rule book but still a very different game than most ccgs.

My hope is for Decipher's Star Wars mechanics, using the material from Episode VII. I'd settle for Decipher's LotR mechanics, though. That game was a lot of fun, and FFG's tendency to include a lot of tokens in their products dovetails nicely with the twilight tokens, wounds and burdens.

It is pretty clear they are at what they feel is the limit of the LCG market. I wouldn't expect any new FFG LCGs for quite some time.

And the calls for reviving old CCGs has been there since Netrunner.

This is pretty much. It's noticed that with taking L5R, they also have stop CoC LCG. So I would say if they decide to pick any other LCG, one of the others have to go.

I wonder was the burning sand2 ip attached to the five rings. Would imagine it would be considering how intertwined they are. Maybe a case of buy 1 get 1 free

Yeah, I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Untangling connected IP like that can be expensive and contentious, and lead to unintended consequences down the road. Just ask Fox and Marvel.

I doubt if it'll be exploited for a long time, but my money's on FFG getting Burning Sands in the deal.

Frankly, the best bet would be that AEG did it. They still own the IP, and they are doing a good enoug job with Doomtown. I'm not sure how well it's working for them but, if it is doing well, it would be the next logical step now that they have rid of L5R. That, or doing even more versions of Love Letter, that is.

I enjoy smash up too.

I just don't have any expectation that a property they've been sitting on doing nothing for a decade will actually get anywhere.

It's more likely that AEG would put out an updated 7th Sea themselves.

Doomtown seems to be healthy.

The AEG game I would like to see getting a revival at FFG hands is Warlord: Saga of the Storm. It was a incredibly fun fantasy CCG which used D20 System to resolve conflicts (such attacking and passing skill checks). It was even advertised as "The Game you already know how to play". Warlord passed from AEG to Phoenix Entertainment, but that was a road to oblivion. :(

The fantasy setting for Warlord was very interesting, reshaping some standards as benevolent immortal elves (in Warlord they were evil and only immortal using necromancy), dwarves being outcasts (humanity saw them as demons, since they were living underground for about a thousand years until they needed to surface), and such. It had a great storytelling too, abount the Assassin's Strike - a great plan that killed almost all heroes and villains in Accordlands ina single night, plunging the lands in absolute turmoil.

I really miss that five years playing Warlord:SotS :P

I don't think this will happen, of course, but in the extremely unlikely case that it did, I would bet good money that the game would be reskinned to feature Terrinoth (FFG's house fantasy setting) rather than the Accordlands.

Maybe not exactly the place to post it, but . . . those of you looking for 7th Sea should find some good news by heading over to:

To be clear, that's the RPG rights. The announcements from both AEG and John Wick tend to indicate that AEG retains the rights to produce board and card games based on the IP, and hint that there may be some such products in the offing.

Didn't realise that!

From listening to Zinser's interview, he was hinting at a few things alright. I think he is intent to make a new ecg at least, 7th sea could be it.
