OCTG2 plugin for AGOT LCG

By Gualdo, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I received another mail from Jeremy and he complains only by the fact that I asked permission by forum channel and not via mail. I'm desoleted by this but I thought was a correct way to act.

Jeremy told me that he agrees to keep updated the program with 6 month old card. He complains about the fact I posted CPs newer. I explained that newer cards were censored and posted him some example,

I asked him his point about this kind of solution and also proposed an only text version of new cards.

Waiting his reply and then I will inform you.

ciao

Waiting reply I ask if someone can help me modifying the post where I link the downloadable content so I can "delete" the link meanwhile I receive some more news.

thx

To edit a post:

- press enter/activate/destroy.

That's it. :)

Done thanks :-)

I deleted links to KOTS and King's Landing waiting response from FFG.

I received another mail and Jeremy told me that the problem is not using images of the cards but the text of them. He explains to me that only name of the card can be used so the person who owns the card knows it.

I think that I can act in this way. Delete text of cards from the deckbuilder and use only image of the cards and name of the cards (without crest, symbols, text keywords, strenght).

This solution for last 6 months cards. And then month per month I update the system adding cards and adding new ones censored.

I promised also that I will not post via mail the complete plugin. I think this is a good way to procede.

Remember that the program is open source and modifiable so if a local playgroup want to add their cards for local use they can easily.

What do you think??? I think this is a fair compromise.

Good compromise: good job Gualdo.

But MY OPINION is: NOT GOOD, FFG. Bad move.

I'm sorry, cause I'm a faithful fellow and who knows me knows...But I cannot approve this.

Ok, it's not important, but that's my opinion.

Before you go flying too far off the handle, remember that you don't know their side if the story. You don't know what kind of licensing issues there are or other copyright/distribution restrictions FFG might be under. Remember that FFG is not the only copyright holder of these cards, and actually has a pretty narrow license for use of the ASoIaF material. For example, maybe an electronic version of the card game is too close to an ASoIaF video game, which Cyanide has the rights to, not FFG - meaning FFG doesn't really have the legal right to say "yes" to it. Could explain the whole 6-month delay that Raven always had to work under.

I don't know that any of that it true. I'm just saying FFG may be placing this restriction because they legally HAVE to, not because the want to.

I agree, I thinks its a fair compromise. I think FFG is being quite accommodating (note that this is similar to how they allow people to host "play bo forum" versions of some of their board games on the forum at boardgamegeek.com). Gualdo, if you're willing to continue to make updates as new chapter packs come out I for one would be appreciative.

In the WE I'll make the "changement" required by FFG and I thanks them to allows us to continue using the software. I think Ktom had the right point, actually they asked me to into application a disclaimer.

And no problem to update monthly the system.

bye

a.

Here in Spain we have the right to copy and distribute everything we own as long as we don not make profit of it. Buying a Chapter Pack gives me the right to scan all the cards, use them to create a plugin and upload it to the internet.

I don't know what your law says about this but I think it's your obligation to know it and do what it says. Assuming you cannot download a copy of something you don't own (be it a card, a book, a movie...) I suppose you're the ones who should be careful not to download the plugin. I'm not a lawyer, though. I just say what my common sense dictates me.

Here in Italy it is the same, but since we are into FFG forum I think a compromise it is not so bad.

Of course not! It's a good think to ask for FFG's permission since you're posting the link to the plugin in their forum. I'm just saying you can keep updating the plugin with original scans and distribute it (not here if you don't feel right doing it) because your law allows you to do it.

Sorry, but I understand a bit of licences issues.

I'm not saying "FFG, fu.....g ba...rds" or the like.

I like the agreement we've reached and I've already told Gualdo that he did a great job...And I said "Thanks" to FFG in lots of situation, even by private mails, when they deserved it.

But don't "baby" me, 'cause I'm just tellin' what I think. And what I think it's right. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Sorry if I offended someone around here. Who knows me, can tell without any problem that I always say what I think and sometimes (even if it's not right) it becomes a flaw. I've some "instinct" when writing something I care about, but i've NEVER offended anyone. And if I did, it was not my intention. Believe me .

Anyway, that's just to be clear. gran_risa.gif

I know and tryin' to know better than this the laws that are around licences, free softwares, copyright and I'm managing to know more (I'm in "Law Studies" and I like them)...And I know, as anyone else here, that these issues are on a thin line between "law" and "business interests".

So. I know laws and I like to follow them, obviously, but I CAN SAY my opinion and I can, as everybody can, say that I don't agree with some of them or with the "use/abuse" that sometimes people/companies make.

I'm not saying that FFG is makin' a Law Abuse (it may seems, but here it's difficult for me to explain these concepts)....

I do not believe in the fact that they couldn't do anything else 'bout this "agreement". If they want, thay can make this software become the official software.

For the same reasons, I could say deckbuilders are illegal (they show complete text), but they're not, in lot of cases.

And then, I'm investing a "big" amount of money on these products and I'd really like to see other things, sometimes.

I mailed them in private, anyway: in this way I say that what I've said it's just my responsibility.

In this way I'll never be a "trouble" again about this issue.

Regards.

No one is trying to "baby" you or say that your opinion is not valid.

What I am saying is that in my opinion, implying that FFG is being inconsiderate to fans of the game and making things harder by requesting this compromise in the interest of unidentified business interests may not be entirely fair or as clear cut as all that. I'm simply trying to offer more information to people who are still forming an opinion.

You say FFG could simply make this the "official" electronic version of their game, but there is a very real possibility that they do not have license to make an electronic version of their game that includes references to Martin's work. Just because you have the movie rights does not necessarily mean you have the DVD rights, so to speak. (Happens all the time with old TV shows; they can't go to DVD because the producers don't have the rights to distribute a song they used on the soundtrack in that way.) Said another way, making it seem "official" could be the entire problem. That could explain the request for a disclaimer and why notice was taken primarily when links were posted in a forum that they owned.

After all, look at tzumainn's site. He has been putting full text spoilers up soon after the cards come out for years and FFG loves the site. Of course, it is obviously a fan site with no downloadable "product" and references the copyrights, which may make all the difference.

Ok, got it. Your points are valid. Admit my mistake.

I'm just a bit...hot blooded for this kind of stuff...Sorry.

No mistake on your part, and a very valid reaction. It is certainly an important side of the issue.

I updated first post with all links to Sets (Censored and Uncensored) and with a new layout for the system that contains disclaimer. If you don't like this new background tell me so I will replace it with the older one.

ENJOY

Gualdo, I've used your plugins to play several games online. Thanks again for putting them together; it's nice to be able to get games in in-between our group's meetups.

Do you yet have a plugin for the 6th King's Landing chapter pack? I thought I could perhaps make one myself, but after unzipping one of yours and looking at the files within, it looks like a complicated undertaking.

Hi, I have received this thursday and I updated first post with downloadable full (censored) King's landing set.

It would be good if someone (from next CP) would scan the image when it arrives in USA so we don't have to wait my italiano "Card 3 weeks delay TIME ZONE" :-)

ENJOY (this afternoon I go to south italy for an AGOT Tourney (2 days dedicated to martin's card game, boardgame and RPG :-))

ciao

Is anyone running OCTGN on Windows 7? I'm thinking of upgrading my Windows machine, but if OCTGN has trouble running on Windows 7 I might take a pass.

Next WE I think I'll be able to update the system with Martell Expansion (censored version). Stay Tuned!

I just got a new comp with Windows 7. Everything appears to run okay, but I haven't played any games yet.
